GUIs are rarely more efficient or faster than a CLI. But man is mostly a visual critter, so a GUI is an easier tool with which to guide those who won't RTFM. - Dan. I can second that statement that man is mostly a visual critter. We tend to forget that the GUI was designed after people at Xerox PARC studied the way young children learn. Having taught high school for 30+ years, I can tell you that the vast majority of my students (and my colleagues) would never look twice at a computer, much less use one, if it were still a command line device. -- Terry McCune -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Gee, I don't think it's all that rare, after all Bruce, I'm not arguing against graphics. I do love them. I am just saying that in many instances (and a point of sale system is a great example) they are slower. I am visual, yes. But there are times I just can't get a handle on an applications stock icon in the dock, for whatever reason. I have my finder set up in list view as well, as not only am I visual, but things need to stay in the same place (you should see my frustration when a manufacturer changes the color or design of a favorite grocery store item, I am completely lost LOL). I entered computers in the days of TI 99-/4A's (and I know that's not spelled right, it's been years). Then DOS, then the Mac in '87. But where I can use a keyboard, I will. Photoshop and Illustrator are for the most part mouse apps for me, for the reasons you listed above. :) Diane -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... But I sympathize with your thought Use the TAB key, Luke!...worse, I'll wager that the application your talking about supports it, even has carefully laid out tab-key navigation, but people are so conditioned to using a mouse, they continue doing so even when better alternatives exist. I mean, I show people in the login screen in Windows all the time. Look, shift-tab moves up to the username field, and select the old name, just type in your name, hit the tab key and type in the password. Now hit enter. Bing, bang, boom. It's painful seeing them slowly mouse up to the username field, aim and click a few times before they get the edit bar at the end of the name in there and slowly hitting the delete key one at a time to delete the username in the field. They're astonished that it works, and they forget about it before I leave their office. I'm slowly larnin' them, though. As they come in with some issue or another, mostly forgotten passwords I make 'em use my system. They get a little confused seeing a Windows screen in the middle of my monitor, then really confused when they see my Kensington trackball with four buttons. :-) That slows then down long enough to absorb hit the tab key. It's odd. Only Windows users seem to have this problem. All of my Mac users get it right away. -- Bruce Johnson This is the sig who says 'Ni!' -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I had a project partner in college for several years, that was very dyslexic. We had a blast writing code - Pascal, C, Lisp, and several different Assemblys. We built two dictionaries for a spelling checker. One would essentially fix his spelling of keywords, so the compliers were happy. Diane wrote, I see someone in a store with their GUI cash register typing one word, reach for the mouse, type, reach, etc, and all I can say is TAB KEY! ROTFL...that's ~exactly~ what I do; or I will mutter, press the TAB key, press the TAB key, press the TAB key under my breath, just loud enough for the clerk to hear (and apparently, that's all they will ever be; not that being a clerk is less than honorable work, but there are definitely better ways to make a living, IMHO). And, I still find myself going to Terminal, from time to time. rb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
