Re: How do you manually import bookmarks (favorites) into Safari?!

2004-07-07 Thread Tristan Gant
A follow-up note to the steps below is that when you enable the "Reimport
Internet Explorer favorites" option in TinkerTool, Safari will automatically
import bookmarks from Internet Explorer at its next launch. After the Safari
is launched, the option in TinkerTool will automatically be unchecked.

Another alternative is to install TinkerTool for OS X (you can get it free
at http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html ), start TinkerTool, go to the
Safari tab and check the "Enable Debug" and/or "Reimport Internet Explorer
favorites" options. Safari should be closed before you enable these options.

Start Safari and you can see the Debug menu next to the Help menu. Click on
the Debug menu and you can see the options to import bookmarks directly from
Internet Explorer/Mozilla bookmarks or manual search for bookmarks that are
already exported by other browsers in html format.

Besides enabling the Debug Menu of Safari, TinkerTool have other features
for other components of the operating system.

I've had great success with URL-Manager Pro http://url-manager.com It
allows you to maintain one bookmark file for all your browsers. Very handy!

For any member who wants to force Safari to import their Netscape or IE
bookmarks, you need to use the Terminal to accomplish this task. Follow
these steps.

1. Quit Safari if it is open.
2. Drag the target bookmark files back to their original location.
3. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
4. Type this in the Terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.SafariNetscapeAndMozillaFavoritesWereImported
5. Press Return.
6. Type this in the terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.Safari IEFavoritesWereImported
7. Press Return.
8. Quit Terminal.
9. Open Safari.

There are some freeware that will let you import your bookmarks from
Explorer, "Safari Enhancer" being one of them.

working around some bug encountered in the past, but usually neither the bug
nor the reason the code apparently avoided the bug was ever fully understood

How do you manually import bookmarks (favorites) into Safari?!

2004-07-05 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Once again,
I'm stuck wondering why Apple thinks everyone is gonna get all the
answers they need in there incredibly lacking help program. According
to it, Safari is supposed to import all my IE favorites the first time
it runs. This is simply not true. It doesn't do anything except boot
up. I check the bookmarks, and they are not there. I would like to
use Safari as my default browser, but until my favorites can be
imported, I guess I'm stuck with Explorer. I tried FireFox, but it to
doesn't import favorites from IE, although at least Firefox imports
bookmarks from Safari and Netscape automatically even though that
doesn't do anything for me. Any ideas?
