at 16 months, getting it back up and running for only $300 was a very 
pleasant alternative to wailing in the dark. I was stunned by the 4 day 
turnaround from an apple store. That store offers some really great 
service. Satisfied in Seattle.

Sounds like the power inverter (I think that's what Apple replaced) as 
opposed to the backlight. At least that's what it was on my son's 500 
that showed similar symptoms.

around $300US.  Would you
repair or simply sell for scrap and purchase a new IceBook?

A:   Gee, I have a powerbook 180, wallstreet, lombard, and 550 
ti-book.They are all turned on right now.Although refurb'ed 
ibook's are going really cheap at the Apple store right now, they 
aren't going for $300.

all give you advice on how to fix it.   I just resoldered my/my 
daughter's charge plug for free---if you view my time as having no 
value.

Well, it is a backlighting problem.  It boots up and one can see it on 
an external monitor, but the LCD panel's backlighting is not working.  
I have put larger HD's in TiBooks (not fun, BTW), however, am not sure 
on this one.  Apple wants $300 minimum to do the honors and I am on the 
fence whether I will be throwing good money after bad (longevity of the 
machine) ... however have thought about using it as a test case for YDL 
or Gentoo.

A:  I have one of those "repair manual" CDs for tons of mac stuff. 
anyway, get access to the manuals for the take apart stuff.   But 
a flickering screen doesn't sound like a ribbon-cable problem, sounds 
like a problem in that power-thingy by the clutch.

But my manuals don't go up to the modern stuff.  There are a couple 
of places you can download these or buy the CDs but I think its 
illegal to post them on the list--you can find them.

My experience is that if you have a bunch of small torx and phillips 
head stuff, the instructions are not so hard to follow--of course the 
first time is really scary.

I think I recall, maybe, vaguely, that the hard part of the new 
icebooks and the ti-books is cracking the monitor itself.   (not to 
mention on the Ti-book it takes even teenier torx bits.

Also, sometimes, you can get a complete lid fairly cheap by lurking 
around ebay.

I can do the HD swap in an Icebook in about  30-45 minutes (I already have
the Torx Drivers ;-).  A Pismo HD takes about 3-5 minutes.  The screw matrix
is a pain and doing a perfect job with zero plastics damage or scratching
takes time in an Icebook.

one, but my wife needed a bigger hard drive so I took the plunge. The whole
operation took over four hours, and that's not including the trip to the
