Re: Lombard & OSX

2004-04-19 Thread Polkadoter
Thanks, for all the suggestions. I think its related to the memory. Will
move the 128k stick (actually a 256 but its a dual sided so only sees 128)
from the top to the bottom and see what happens. Right now when both stick are
in OSX goes only as far as the installation screen, and when I take out the
128 - it doesn't work at all. So it must be the memory. Might have to
purchase more.

Re: Lombard & OSX

2004-04-18 Thread mmnihals
As another poster said - remove all peripheral when you run the installer
(better to clear this option first before you dig in).

If that doesn't work here's an overview of how to get to the bottom ram
slot :)

http://www.transintl.com/technotes/installrampbg3.htm

more detailed instructions from Apple

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25002

accessed from http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/

That 4GB drive will be a bit of tight fit but it should work - once
stuffed OSX 10.1, OS9, and LinuxPPC into my old 4GB drive. Still a bigger
drive is nice - IBM travelstar drives seem to work nicely on the Lombard.

Good luck

Make sure you don't have any peripheral attached. Also, did you check if you
can boot another Mac with your Panther disk? Maybe the disk is damaged?

I have a Lombard with 4GB hard drive. I think that is too small.

You have to carefully pry out the processor daughterboard. You have to be
very careful not to bend any of the numerous pins that connect the
daughterboard to the motherboard. However, it is easily done when you are
careful and know how it connects. I've done it multiple time without any
problem. The lower memory slot is underneath that daughterboard. I think the
trickiest part is making sure that the daughterboard is firmly put back in
place. You have to apply a firm push to the daughterboard which some people
are afraid to apply. If the daughterboard is aligned properly, there
shouldn't be any problem pushing it firmly into place. You just don't want
to put too much pressure to break the daughterboard, though!

How do I get to the lower slot? The top one is easy to find. The bottom
one has the 64 meg chip in, so I thought I would switch them and take out the 64
meg. I took out the top larger chip and only the original 8.6 disk will
boot up - the panther disks won't. Any help is appreciated. Also, the lombard
has a 4 gig drive - I will be updating in the future but for right now there
isn't many programs on it.

If the machine worked ok with os9 then there might be an odd ram hardware

The other thing of course is to make sure the chips haven't popped out of

the slots (known to happen and is worth a look).

Wish I could recommend a good ram testing/diagnostic software other than

Yes you need to have only one memory chip in one slot. some say to take
out the bottom but I took out the top one then it installed fine

Okay, you do know about the harddisk and the sleep sensor issue.
Actually, I don't know if it applies to the Lombard, it does apply to
the Wallstreet. I have an IBM/Hitachi harddisk in my Wallstreet.
The magnetics in it will sometimes keep the magnetic sensor that is
located near it from sensing that you have opened the lid. It thinks
the lid is still closed so it stays asleep. First thing to try, put
it to sleep using the menu command and don't close the lid. If it
always wakes from this it could be the problem.

There is a fix to this by shielding the drive with mu metal. I've
opted for a simpler approach. If the computer doesn't wake I tilt it
up or turn it around while tapping the shift key. My theory is that
the magnetic sensor is right on the edge and moving the computer
around changes effect of the earth's magnetic field on the sensor.

FWIW, give it a try.
