Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system
Sorry to be so late on a reply for this. Yes, It has a usb hub. 2 usb plug on the side of the screen and a couple underneath also. I think dells is the only cheap competitive screen in the 20 inch size. If you buy it make sure to use a nonwashable type marker, hardly even notice the Dell mark anymore it just blends into the frame. In the 23 inch size there are numerous makers, Dells 24 inch looks tempting. I like the idea of leaving the long cord plugged in. Are your hubs powered? What brand are they? Any problems with them? I've had a string of bad luck with The firewire hub is powered. It's a Belkin 7 port. I've had no issues with it. My USB hub is some cheap one I picked up at a local computer store. It's used for my mouse, keyboard, scanner, and photo printer. My USB ports are all USB 1.1 on my powerbook, so I didn't bother with a more expensive hub. No issues with it either. All of the devices are low power devices tho I'm pretty sure. cheap USB hubs, so that's why I ask ... not sure which brands are likely to be most reliable. You can kind of see if in the photo at http://www.sfuller.net/gallery/office/aaa (you can click the photo once to zoom in to full size). Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system
After a few months with my 15 G4 PowerBook, I so rarely fire up the Quicksilver that I've decided to try to use the Powerbook as my desktop system on the rare occasion that I need the luxury of my swivel chair and 21 CRT ... I plan to run an external Firewire DVD-RW (the PB has a combo drive) and an external USB2 hard drive for storage of customer jobs, and have extended AppleCare ... If anyone here is using a PowerBook like this, I'd love to hear how it's working for you and any problems or surprises you've encountered. Are you using USB or Firewire hubs? External drives? I use my Pismo G4 with an internal super drive USB hub external keyboard monitor and mouse, I turn the internal display off with the laptop opened @ a 45 degree angle for better airport range and cooling. I connect to the net with the powerbook and do an adhoc to share the connection with my ***dows box, I do real estate and have to run internet explorer 6 to access listings, I use virtual pc sometimes put it is painfully slow, I also have an older HP all in one that doesn't have OSX drivers. 17 monitor at 1024x768 is perfect for me.
