Re: New Member- iBook clamshell graphite
I have a G4 iBook with the Airport Extreme card installed, I can access wireless networks anywhere provided there is no password set on it. Can't imagine that the original Airport card would work any differently. Tim On 3/14/05 11:48 PM, Andrea Stansbury [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I just got one off ebay and love the machine. I have ordered one of the original airport cards and do not have a base station. But I do have DSL through the phone company and a wireless gateway that is supposedly compatible with macintosh. My question for now: will I have the ability to get wireless at say the coffee shop with the old airport card? Are there suggestions for a wireless booster that would work to make the iBook useful in any room in my house? I'm sure there will be more questions as I get the airport card and get it installed, which I don't think will be a problem. A.M. i have a pismo, a cube and an imac g5. the first 2 have the older airport card, the second the newer one. i use the wi-fi modem that my dsl provided gave me, and they all work fine. what modem will you use? provided there is no password involved, you should have no problem using your ibook wirelessly. the building that i live has concrete walls, but i have no problem getting a signal in the apartment. i am right now in my bedroom and the modem is in the other bedroom. i get 4 lines in the signal. if i go to the living room, i usually get 3 lines. granted, my place is not big, but the walls are solid. g On Mar 15, 2005, at 12:48 AM, Andrea Stansbury wrote: I just got one off ebay and love the machine. Good to know. Thanks for the replies, all. There is no password involved. It already connects to the dsl modem without trouble, I can't imagine it's going to be different if the computer goes wireless. Well, since airwaves can go pretty much anywhere and can be received by any people within range, all wireless protocols now have some kind of security layer where you have to authenticate before you can get access. So, if your coffee shop's wireless router isn't setup for any security, you'll be fine. If not, you'll have to find a way to provide the password to join their wireless network. I have, however, no experience with authenticating to a wireless access point besides the AirPort Base Station... -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Almost all of them support the 802.11b (the protocol used by the older AirPort card) and few, in my experience, support 802.11g (the new AirPort card). -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] elder days n.: The heroic age of hackerdom (roughly, pre-1980); the era of the PDP-10, TECO, ITS, and the ARPANET.
