Ya, but your B & W is dropping farther and farter down the food chain. I
just bought a G4/500 Gigabit ethernet for $600 (40gb/384mb/DVD/56k) to act
as a server. It depends on where you look. I could've snagged a second
G4/450 for $500, but I didn't have the cash in my hand.

The advice to avoid a Wallstreet (and all their problems) is sound. Get a
Pismo 400 at the least. And if you don't have the $ then save up until you
do. I have a pile of dead Wallstreet units here. Don't go there.

A bit off topic but

Thats what the told me about my B&W

my $285 B&W/G3-400/dvd-rom 0/0/no video card ( about 8mos ago.)

as it sits today:

G4/450
CDRW/DVD
1GB ram
60GB HD
Mac Radeon DDR PCI
usb Floppy
ide Zip + bezel

Ive got $650 in the above system to date after replacing and selling what
was no longer needed.

One could do good to get a stock G4 Yikes for $600 + shipping
and if/when one did it wouldn't compare in speed or performance.

You mean the Pismo, right? I think the original poster is still thinking
about a Wallstreet, which don't always have a DVD drive. In fact, most of
them don't and you can expect around $150-$200 for a DVD drive with the
decoding card to play DVDs on those Wallstreet. Most likely, the original
poster won't be able to find a Wallstreet with those options even for
$500...

fandango on core n.: [Unix/C hackers, from the Iberian dance] In C, a wild

sometimes said to have `done a fandango on core'. On low-end personal
machines without an MMU (or Windows boxes, which have an MMU but use it
incompetently), this can corrupt the OS itself, causing massive lossage.
Other frenetic dances such as the cha-cha or the watusi, may be substituted.

No, but you won't get a Wallstreet with all the upgrades you mentioned for
that either. Add another $200 and you can get one for that on ebay if you
shop around the auctions, although a nice one will be double your bellow

With what you want to do to a Wallstreet, you should just purchase a G3/400
Pismo and get the USB and Firewire already built in and quite possibly save
some cash.

New member soon - Need Avice on model/upgrade/to get.

2002-10-14 Thread discoveryarts

Hiya, this will be my 4th LEM list Ive been on in all my mac
days..didnt bother with my performa 6320 - would have been more like...
group therapy.

Time fo me to get a laptop, specifically a Powerbook < ima poor mac owner >.
I really wanted to get a Blueberry ibook to go with my Blue and White G3/G4.
but the 300mhz / 66mhz kinda disapointed me. Im going to be doing a bit of
music processing software and a bit of gaming as well and need the speed <
as much as a mac can deliver =( > ...having turned down free peecee's at
different times, I seem to be a sad case and have learned to accept the
sufferages of being a mac-man. BUS SPEED is my largest peeve with apple

That being said, I love my mac's =) and love 'em even more when cheaper pc
parts fit =)

my Questions are:

I havent much $ so as usual I am going to have to build what I need. but
what to start with as a base model...?

my theory is to start with a Wallstreet G3/250 or 292 because of the faster
bus speed < 83 as apposed to 66 > I eventually plan to drop a 400+mhz
upgrade into it Ive done some
research and noticed that some of the upgrades are different depending of
the buspeed of the model. Im wondering if the upgrade for a 66mhz model
compensates to the point that it is the same end-performance as the same
speed upgrade in a 83 mhz model through the different cache's used.?

also are there upgrades that I can do myself or do all the processors have
to be sent to the upgrader to be manipulated.?

are the processors (OEM's) swapable across the board or just within their
families.?

Im looking for the least expensive way to end up with a zippy little G3/400+

also are there usb and/or firewire upgrades for wallstreets that need them.?
also what is my ceiling as far as video cards/memory goes?

all-in-all Id suffer with the 66mhz inside of a Blueberry if there is a
way to upgrade the processor...anyone now if there is? I know they finially
came up with a way to do it to the imac, but cant find so with ibooks.

Thanks in advance, and hope to be seeing ya soon =)
Ralph
