Apple has never been "friendly" to its customers, apple just wants to
sell hardware at a premium. The ishuffle and the minimac are some of
apples best attempts of selling hardware for the rest of us. The e-mac
and g3-imacs are also very good. I compare the Mac to the BMW.

Ever buy windshield whippers for a Beemmer? You are in for shocking
surprise...

Ever buy a $5.00 chocolate bar from a hotel in room bar fridge? A 75
cent chocolate bar for 5 bucks!!!

Some companies want to sell 10 items for a dollar, some companies want
to sell 1 item for 10 dollars. Guess what boat Apple's in.

Anyways back to the bug. I took back the cheap K-Byte 333 DDR memory
and installed a $30 dollar more Kingston 400 DDR memory stick and all
is well...

Just a heads up...

Even if I were loaded with money I wouldn't out of principle. Perhaps
give the difference to charity instead.
Also, "other sources" doesn't equal ALL other sources, so your not good
experiences can only serve as an experience for the vendors you have
used, none other.

In addition, unless people choose other suppliers for RAM Apple will keep
their artificially high prices instead of getting real and be
competitive. Better now, than when they are on the brink again. And if
Apple grow complacent again, that WILL happen.

Tim, do you realize how much is a bit more? Apple is known for overcharging
customers for memory. You can get the same memory from other dealers for 2/3
to 1/2 of the price Apple charges you. And they are as quick to replace bad
chip as Apple is.

Well, what do I care it is your money...

Re: Only 256 Meg of 512 Meg RAM is recognized

2005-03-14 Thread Jan Musil
I have purchased 512 MB chip for 1GHz PowerBook 12'' on the web. The chip
that arrived in 2 days was bad so I sent it back and it took abour 10 days
to get a replacement that works fine. It is not the highest speed, but
reasonable enough to get what you want for reasonable money.

The handlig by the zipzoomfly.com was very good. No hold-ups on their side -
it took them 24 hours to respond to the RMA and then it was only a matter of
shipping the chip back to them and waiting for the new one to arrive.

You may try CompUSA if there is one close by or MicroCenter - they also have
Macs on display and could advise you which memory works best. I myself got
the Kingston Value RAM and I'm happy with it.

Brian - All my memory comes from Crucial Tech - that's where my local dealer
(where I work part time) gets his memory. Good people to deal with - both
Crucial and Greg!

Looking at prices for a 512MB SODIMM, I'd call $150 (Apple) versus $76
(OWC) more than "a bit" ;-)

Only 256 Meg of 512 Meg RAM is recognized

2005-03-14 Thread Brian Stewart
Went out yesterday to "BEST BUY" looking for a 1 Gig Memory SO-DIMM for
my;
12" PowerBook G4 867 MHz

It requires a 266 MHz 200 pin SO-DIMM DDR memory chip. I found a 512
Meg stick and was informed the 1 Gig chips don't exist. So much for the
"Geek SQUAD", should be "Geek Squids". Well the factory 256 Meg is just
not cutting it and I opted for a 512 Meg Card, I picked up a K-Byte
Memory Chip - 2100/2700 512 Meg DDR SO-DIMM chip for my powerbook. The
power book only sees 256 Meg of the 512 chip for a grand total of 384
Meg.

Good thing I picked it up at a local best buy to return it hassle free.
Anyone else have this problem? I had a similar problem with single
sided 256 PC133 SIMMS on my PeeCee.

Any Suggestions? I would like to buy the memory local, it is better to
spend a little extra and have the ability to test and return the RAM if
there is a problem. I like "E-BIZZZ" but memory for an Apple Laptop
could be a pain in the butt.
