Poor Apple Service Was: Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-21 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Larry,
Yes, you can really wonder. I have made notes, I have the exact time
for the call etc. and I really want to send a complaint to Apple.
Have no idea where to send it to though, and to who there I should
address it. I mean, if I had trusted her, I most likely would have
given up this computer, I would have had to sell it again. I could
have lost a lot of money on the whole thing. Now I have a keyboard on
the way, they mailed me and said they had received it and sent it on
to me with the airport express base...

We are all humans, and I do not have any problems with a person
making an error, if they just are a bit humble. When you tell them in
a nice way that you know for a fact that what she is saying is
incorrect, that you have checked this before and that you already got
an offer for one from a different company - and she still will not
give in or at least check the issue over again That is when I got
really annoyed and I told her that I was really unhappy with the
level of the service she was giving, that I thought it was really
poor...

She deserves to get a clear message from her superiors that this is
not good enough, and I would not mind a written reply to a
complaint... :)

Aase :)
Anyway, maybe contacting Apple would be a better idea (Maybe they had a
dead iBook to pull one from)?. I not only didn`t get any help there, the
lady flat out gave me incorrect information. She told me that it was not
possible to change the keyboard, and no way would she listen to me. When
I asked her What if a person`s keyboard breaks?, she told me that if
that was the case, the person would have to buy a new computer.
Sometimes one wonders how some people retain their jobs...

Changing the keyboard is a fairly easy process, you just have to be
careful. Just look at the section for upgrading your memory in the
iBook manual (PDF version here:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/ibook/0221682i
BookG4UG.pdf) It is under the Enhancing your computer section of the
manual, page 55. After removing the metal RAM Shield you will see the
connector for the keyboard. Look at the second and third pictures here
http://www.bluap.nl/mac/ibookdual.php?ibookid=3 for the ram shield and
keyboard connector. You just have to slide up the top part of the
connector which will release the keyboard cable. Then pull out the
keyboard connector, slide in the new one, and push down the top of the
connector to lock the cable in place. Check here for more instructions
on removing a zif cable
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pcyc/zif.htm

Then change you keyboard type under system preferences. If you ever
need to send the laptop in for apple care just swap the old keyboard in
and you are good to go.

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-19 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Aase Marit Waage [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have you seen a laptop painted with a motif? You wouldn`t be afraid that it
could sort of ruin the simple elegance the PB has - the sort of minimalist
style?
The thing is, I am a serious Mac fanatic, ask anyone who knows me,
however, I wouldn't steer my creativity based on the style set out by
Apple. What I would do with a Mac (I have many plans) is not affected
by Apple or their style, more my own imagination.
Take a look at:
http://www.paintedbytes.com/
http://www.applefritter.com/hacks (Click on laptop mods)
Now, I am not saying that many (or any) of these are nice,
but it is all what the owner likes that matters.
Regarding the keyboard...
I checked with a Mac support place and the price for a Mac
keyboard is UNBELIEVABLY EXPENSIVE and as it is not a
user changeable part, even if the PowerBook is out of
warranty, you cannot buy it with them changing it, even
if I have/will completely disassemble the entire PowerBook
and repaint it...
I am seriously investigating pinting the keys!!!
Oh, and I keep my nails trimmed, as this I am sure has a big
effect on the longevity of the print, even on the old black G3
PowerBooks. I just sold my wife's Lombard and half the key
were hardly distinguishable...
To me it looks very doable, the biggest problem is that the
keyboard isn't actually the same layout. The Swedish return
key is vertical while I believe the US is horizontal...
Time will tell (as Robert Nesta Marley said...)

Yes, that is one consideration, but I have had enough of
me changing my Macs every other week (slight exageration)
and never being able to settle. I am pretty good at finding
cheap Macs but then find the temptation of selling them
too much.
I have so far built up a cash buffer of about the value of
a new iBook, and having paid back the starting capital.
As I said, I now need to settle down with one Mac that fits
my needs, hence all the toing and frowing with which model.
My reasoning with the painting is that if I buy a dented PB
G4 Alu which has already got a lower value, I'm not going to
harm the value by repairing it and repaingting it.
In any case, it is the USE that is the value not the resell value!!
I hate it when you see ads where people are selling a Mac
with the text paid $4000 five years ago, want $3000...
Forgetting actual hardware depreciation, five years of use
costs more than $200 per year!!!

That's the one.
My biggest problem is deciding between a straight (i.e. single
colour) or going for a motif of some sort.
A straight colour will always look good, while a good motif will
look better, though a crap motif will look shit and spoil the PB.

Re: Painting AlBook ???

Hi Larry,
I just have to say one thing though, I hold you
personally accountable for my home being messy
and that I didn`t even do laundry today ;) BGI
had big plans for doing _sensible_ stuff, instead
my _whole evening_ went poof - gone... Where I
have been all night? The applefritter site and
the other site you also gave me... I got
completely lost and time flew!!! And it is all
your fault!!! LOL

OK... So... I give in totally You convinced
me... I can just say one thing, if you can do
something like some of these, I will just take a
bow and say GO FOR IT Shoot, I hate to admit
it, but I even kind of liked the green book with
the flower pattern... Geeez, I never liked flower
patterned stuff... I just can`t believe it, but
it is just kind of cool... neat... fun
retro...

The only one that really made me go YIKES (big
time juck, juck, juck), was the one with the
spiders. I just waited for one of them to pop out
of my screen to come and get me Eew
I have to draw the line somewhere, and for me it
definately goes with insects and bugs, he-he...
Most of the books there were obviously real well
done, most seem to really know what they are
doing, and at least on the pictures, it seems
like they have done perfect jobs.

I just have to say, when you get there, you have
to share pics, or I will get grumpy, OK? :)

The only thing I am not too happy about, is that
now I want to play too :( As if I don`t have
enough not completed creative projects of
different sorts sitting here, he-he... Male
friends tease me all the time, for having more
tools and gadgets than them all combined... One
thing I don`t have and never tried though, is a
compressor and an airbrush... It sure looks like
a lot of fun!!!

When (or if, if you didn`t make a final decision)
you start, will you take step-by-step pictures
like some of these other people did? And ask them
to add it to the applefritter site? That would be
real neat...

The old PB electronic picture frames were neat
too. I had to resist an urge to give it a try,
but that I really don`t think would be a good
idea for me, I never opened a computer or did
anything that has to do with electronics, I can
only perform the most simple electric jobs, those
that we are allowed to do ourselves here. I do
have a deep respect for electricity, LOL... I
have only blown a main fuse and darked out the
whole house once, when I was 12 years old. I did
it right, just didn`t know about the importance
of insulation, he-he... Learned my lesson though,
after being subjected to an embarrassing serious
talk by our electrician family friend who came to
the rescue when the lights wouldn`t go on after
the ordinary main fuses were replaced (Boy was I
in trouble!) But with the help of a more
skilled person, and some careful planning, I am
sure I could do it... It would have been a lot of
fun to make one, including the frame itself (a
splendid occasion for using my fancy miter (sp?)
saw!)... It would have been great with an even
bigger one, to show photo art and other artwork
on... Oh well, it won`t happen anytime soon, but
in a couple of years, I will have a lot more time
on my hands!!! LOL BTW, I looked around on eBay
the other day, and there were so many old PB`s
there, really cheap. I saw two PB`s, one 170 and
one 165 that were ending in an hour or so, and
they were at $9.99... Of course a color screen
one would be more expensive, but it wouldn´t have
to cost much at all. The 170 was my first PB,
back in 1992, so I had to pull myself together to
resist bidding on it. It would have been a lot of
fun to own one again, just for the fun of it.
Boy that was an awesome computer back then,
everybody were jealous - I loved that computer...

In your other post you mentioned painting the
keyboard vs. getting a Swedish one. I really know
what you mean about the Enter key. I am having
real problems with it here too, as the Norwegian
keyboard also has the larger, partly vertical one
(like a flipped L, the International one plus
the key upside it to the right, combined). I keep
missing the Enter-key all the time. I have had a
little keyboard ordeal too. I won`t feel really
relieved until I have the new one here... I
Before I bought this iBook, I talked to the guy
who helped me pick all my previous Power Books.
He now owns his own business, but earlier he
worked as a consultant (at something like
Hjälpmedelverket), working with computers and
adapting them and accessories for people using
them as assistive technology because of
disabilities (The reason why I got my first PB
was that I have trouble writing because of a
disability I have, that is how I met him).
Bottom line is that every time my computer has
needed to be replaced, he has been there to help
me, so it felt sort of scary not having him to
guide me this time. I was so very happy when I

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-18 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Aase Marit Waage [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am just now trying out the new iBook on the net for the first time and
boy does things go faster than on the Pismo... Just love it!!!
One of the biggest factors is VRAM for OS X!!!
---
BTW, have you now decided for sure to go for the PB?
I think I would have had problems deciding
Em, no. I AM (!) having problems deciding!!!
The issue is that the PB needs a new battery, but at least the I KNOW
it is new, and that raises the price tag to just over 1000SEK (a basic 12
iBook costs 9495SEK with 256MB and combo), but that does include
768MB RAM and a SuperDrive. It also has AirPort Xtreme, which I know
the iBook has.

That's the one.
My biggest problem is deciding between a straight (i.e. single
colour) or going for a motif of some sort.
A straight colour will always look good, while a good motif will
look better, though a crap motif will look shit and spoil the PB.

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi again Larry,
Have you seen a laptop painted with a motif? You wouldn`t be afraid
that it could sort of ruin the simple elegance the PB has - the sort
of minimalist style? I think the candy apple red sounds really neat
and elegant... But again, of course it is a matter of taste...

Did you have a look at the red Ferrari laptop? There`s a picture at
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3000.htm

I didn`t look further though, I am sure that there are better
pictures out there... But, as far as I can see, it really looks
great. But a painted PB would look much better, no doubt in my
mind :)

When you decide, if you do it, you will just have to share pictures!!!
Aase :)

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-17 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi David,
I am in Norway... I just got my new iBook, which has an international
keyboard. I am now getting a new one, a Norwegian one. So what I need
to do, is to change the keyboard definition in the system, then pop
on the new keyboard. And I will be all set, with a new iBook that
really looks like it belongs in Norway. And I can touch type in my
normal speed again.. :) I would much rather do that than painting the
keys. I really don't think that would be a good solution, at least
not one that would last very long (painting on plastic, the
preparation work would be a lot of work sanding the key's down, using
special primer etc.). Why don't you call around to different Apple
workshops and ask if they have a dead AlBook laying there with a
Swedish keyboard, and if they can pull the keyboard and sell it to
you for a reasonable price...

I wouldn't ask Apple for help though. I think they may be linked
together for the Scandinavian countries, because when I spoke with
them, they kept calling me Swedish even if I told them I am in
Norway. They probably use people sitting in another country. Anyway,
I tried calling them here, and got no help at all. Actually, all I
got was a big lie, that it was impossible to change the keyboard on
an iBook, and that if you needed a new keyboard, you would have to
buy a new computer. I am actually seriously considering to send a
formal complaint. I luckily knew better already, I had checked that
you could change the keyboard before buying the computer. But if I
didn't know, and believed them, I would most likely have had to get
rid of my new iBook, because I have to have the Norwegian keyboard, I
just can't use an International one.

About painting the titanium Power Book... You can take the whole case
off, right? I would seriously consider to sand it down myself, then
use the spackle (what do you call it in English, not sure that is the
right word - Norwegian: sparkel, Swedish, maybe: Spackel?? - Du
forstaar hva jeg mener?) they use for metal/cars (not interior
snabbspackel, that does not get hard enough), then sand it even and
smooth and finally take the whole thing to a car paint shop and get
them to finish the job perfectly. Shouldn't cost much as long as you
have done the preparation work which is what takes time. Or take it
to one of the schools where they learn to paint cars. They normally
do the job for free, you only pay for the paint. I mean, I would make
sure that the paint job was totally perfect... While you are at it,
you also have the chance to get a unique PB, why not go for a
different color? How about shiny bright red? Now that would look real
cool with the white apple... Oh well, you probably want it to look
normal... :)

Just my NOK .50 worth... :)
Aase :)

Hi Clark,
He was thinking of painting the dented/scratched Titanium Power Book,
right (called it Al(uminum)Book)? The iBook was perfect while the PB
wasn't?

Aase :)
One consideration, AFAIK the current iBook is a clear plastic case
with white paint on the inside. If you disassembled the case and
stripped the paint you could then paint it on the inside as you
please and the paint would be thoroughly protected. Mind you this
would void your warranty.

That's my point precisely, a different coloured PowerBook would

There is automotive paint which is strong enough!
