I believe I recently read an article about the high levels of CC fraud
in international orders, because of the difficulty in confirming
validity of cards/addresses etc. At least enough to cut the average
profitability of overseas orders to where it's not worth doing, and a
lot of companies that had shipped overseas were cutting back to a few
select countries. Or tacking on large charges so profitability
returns. (Just reporting what I read - doesn't mean all foreign
orders are fraud, just that the % is way more & recourse way less than
domestic orders.)

2002-09-12 Thread David M Kiely

I fully concur with Chris. And may I say that I don't understand the
reluctance of American companies to ship to Europe. It isn't as if we're
living on the moon here; looked at in mileage terms, New York is as far from
California as London is from New York. I regularly send items by courier to
the States, and the cost is only marginally higher than shipping to, say,
Germany. Why should freight charges be so high then? And postage? One only
has to visit the US Mail site to check the rates and, compared to those in
the UK, they're very reasonable; this is to be expected when considered in
terms of the economy of scale. IMHO a US company that overcharges foreign
customers is guilty of bad marketing; to do so is to limit one's customer
base.

That's a super offer and great to know. I will definitely keep it in mind.
There have been a number of times that I would have gone ahead with a
purchase on ebay or from Smartdisk, for example, if only shipping outside
the US had been available and/or cheaper.
e.g. the recent super prices on Smartdisk peripherals and expansion bay
drives for powerbooks: shipping in the US was free vs. $50 to Canada and
even more to Europe!
Then there's the guy on ebay with all the expansion bay CDRW's and LCD
screens, who doesn't ship outside the US.

As to forward shipping, I've had great luck with the US post office sending
stuff to Canada and Europe. Very cheap air mail rates, delivered in 3-4
days, insured up to $500. Though if you insure it you'll almost certainly
have to pay customs.

Anyway, thanks for the generous offer. There are some super people on this
list.

I concur, and would like to add that anyone outside the states on this
list feel free to contact me if you ever run into a situation like
this. I would be more than happy to help a fellow lister out. I only
ask that whoever it is agrees to pay/reimburse the shipping charges.

Pixels, problems, repairs, laptops. etc

2002-09-09 Thread Gene Bogart

Hello Raymond,

Just a thought (regarding your comments below): Keep in mind that you could
most likely arrange to have something shipped to a fellow (and agreeable)
list member, (like me, or anyone else who's willing to help out), who could
then re-ship the purchased item over to you... Probably wouldn't add too
much cost to the shipping process, and wouldn't take that long.

I recently bought (a few months ago) a Pismo 400 through an eBay seller --
fortunately for me, the LCD screen is perfect! Hope it stays that way;
sounds like a real pain to replace...

All the best (from Florida, USA),

Gene
