Re: OSX 10.3.8 on Pismo?

2005-02-12 Thread Zoltan Batiz
I just wanted to add my two cents on this thread; 10.3.7 has been
nothing but problems on my Pismo. Here's my config:

Pismo 500/G3, 1gig RAM, external 17" Studio Display, external FireWire
SmartDisk CD/RW, USB powered Canon Scanner, USB powered 100meg Zip
Drive, FireWire LaCie HDD for backup, USB Epson C84 printer. . .and a
bunch more stuff like powered sub-woofer, cool speakers, digital camera
etc.

ANYWAY. . .under 10.3.7 my apps. were very sluggish. Slow response
time was not only common in Safari which was mentioned before in
another thread, but also in Mail. Sometimes it would take up to 5
minutes just for Mail to retrieve my email. I used to argue with
Earthlink customer service time and time again wondering why my email
wasn't working property. But then I started to notice the lag in
programs. Another lag was in iChat. There were times it would take
almost 10 minutes just for it to start up.

Moving on to 10.3.8: Everything is perfect. It's like going from 10.1
to 10.2. Night and day! No delays! Email in seconds! I almost feel
like I just bought a new system!

Now, what I'm curious about is my configuration; attention brought to
the 17" Studio Display. Why the display? Well, the change was so
different, I had to call Apple directly and get some answers, 'cause
heck, my performance was so bad under 10.3.7 I was worried that Apple
was starting to phase out G3 support. A nice rep. spoke to me and
surprised me with her answers to say the least. I first told her of
the problems under .7 and now the awsome performance under .8 but
before I could tell her my config., she immediately asked me if I had a
monitor plugged into my Pismo that I use as a second display. Uh. .
.yea, I said. Well, long story short, apparently, 10.3.8 is a major
update on the ATI drivers that control our beloved video cards built
into our Macs. Who'd ah thought a little driver or two would make such
a difference? At least Apple is on the ball I guess. . .just wish they
had updated the ATI drivers sooner is all.

Anyone heard of this? Or did I catch someone in the Apple customer
support on her last day?

No, they're not. The faceplate for the LG attaches with two screws on
the bottom and the faceplate for the Panasonic/Matshita attaches with
three screws.

Re: OSX 10.3.8 on Pismo?

2005-02-10 Thread Kevin Bellerose
My G4 500 pismo has not missed a beat 10.3.8 went on without a hitch, never
any issues with disc recognition or sleep issues I would imagine these are
hardware glitches. I am toying with the idea of selling my pisom to get a
mini. It's a G4 500 upgrade 1 gig of ram, airport, new apple dvd rom,
toshiba 60 gig drive, yoyo, 1 dead BTI battery and 1 apple that lasts about
an hour, powermedic Pismo manual, kensington saddle bag logitech quick cam
pro and bookendz dock microsoft laptop usb scroll optical mouse. Tons of
software. email me off list with interest.

Re: OSX 10.3.8 on Pismo?

2005-02-10 Thread Mark Edward Attew
I had the issue that was supposedly a G4 PowerBook issue of the screen not
coming back on after waking from sleep after I installed 10.3.7. Even with
10.3.8, my Pismo is still doing it. Runs great when I don't let it sleep,
but hard restarting after sleep just sucks and I'm sure it is hell on my
hard drive.
