Re: Partition with 10.2?

2004-06-06 Thread Peter Chastain
Regarding printing: Whatever app I'm trying to print from crashes
before I get the print menu. This is via a USB card in the upper slot.
Worked fine under 10.2, works fine under 9.x.

Lower slot will recognize the Apple DVD-Video card, and that's all.
9.x or 10.x, doesn't matter. I've tried a FireWire, USB and mini HDD,
all to no avail, in the lower. Someone on this list suggested that
perhaps a pin the the DVD card doesn't use is 'broken', and that I
might want to replace the pcmcia cage. So I am; there are 3 for sale
on ebay at this time, and one of 'em will be comin' home with me. I
want a set-up such as you have; USB and FW. 'Cause this 'book seems to
have more life than the Energizer bunny. I keep lookin' for an excuse
to get a new laptop, but just can't seem to justify it, dagnabit :-)

A few other questions if you don't mind -
Printing is broken? Does this mean via a usb printer or trying to use
the serial ports? (serial ports don't work in x, or so I've been told)

And does the lower slot work at all? It seems a shame to have two
slots and not have them both work. I use one with Firewire and one
with USB while using it.

Then everybody was saying that X.2 was great on the WallStreet, so I

I don't mean to post so many messages to the list today. But the ABS
threads are critical to something that I'm trying to do. And I have
been a major conspirator in this particular thread.

So let me add:
You need the OS 9 drivers for OS 9 to see the partitions. Once you
have formatted the disk under OS-X's Disk Utility, it will no longer
be recognized by older Disk Setups or by the OS-9 Installer on the
OS-9 System CD without those drivers.

I often look at my Jaguar partition from a pre-OS X source. So I
would recommend installing the OS 9 drivers on all partitions. It
certainly won't hurt.

I'm beginning to sound like an echo. Laurent's advice would have
been mine as well.

The OS 9 driver option is somewhere near the beginning of the format
process. Keep your eyes open for it (no need to be in a big rush).
You don't want to miss that and proceed with the installation. You'll
have to start over if you miss it.

BTW I also recommend, after you install 9.2.1, updating it to 9.2.2.
It's a free update, although quite large. And make sure you have all
of the OS X security updates as well. I'll let some others fill you
in on those details.

When I put OS X on my Wallstreet, I used the 10.2 installer disks.
Then I had burned all of the other OS and security updaters on
another CD and proceeded to bring everything up to snuff very easily
and quickly. OS 10.2.4 was the current version at that time, so
that's as high as I went.

Oh, I don't mean to sound insulting, but you will lose everything
that's currently on the H.D. when you format and partition. So if
there's anything you want to keep, back up the new drive beforehand.

HTH,

Bob

Re: Partition with 10.2?

2004-05-26 Thread macnifico
If you do decide to install OS 9 on the second partition, **be sure**
to tell Disk Utility to install OS 9 drivers when you format and
partition your drive.

So, bear with me:
Should I first partition the HD with OS 9 Disk Utility, and then
Install OS X.2 on the first partition?
Then OS 9.2.1 on the second, bootable partition?
Just to clarify...
Best regards.

As was pointed out by Bob, you actually want to set the first partition
slightly smaller than 8 GB (like 7.83GB or something a bit smaller than
an actual 8GB). But I'm with Clark that if you can afford a bigger drive,
go for it!

And I'd second Bob's suggestion - I have my second partition set for OS 9
(with OS 9 drivers on it), for the reasons he gave. Amazing how quickly
these drives start filling up...

Clark is absolutely right. An exception would be if the H.D. is 8GB
or smaller, Then no partition is necessary. But that won't apply to
you.

I don't how other list members will feel about it. But I would
suggest installing OS 9.2.2 on the second partition (see below
regarding the first partition). That way you will be able to boot you
PB from different partitions, which can be handy in a number of
situations (i.e. you can't repair a boot partition).

If you do decide to install OS 9 on the second partition, **be sure**
to tell Disk Utility to install OS 9 drivers when you format and

>It makes the most sense to be 8Gb.

I'm not sure what was being recommended here, but I strongly suggest
that you make your first partition slightly smaller than 8GB (7.9 for
instance). I've seen instances where WS II owners have had
installation problems with some versions of OS X when they tried to
install it on a full 8GB partition.

And just for clarity sake, OS X has to be installed on the **first**
8GB (or less) of your Wallstreet's H.D.

I agree with Clark here too. As they say, you can never have too much
RAM or too much hard disk space. I would strongly recommend at least
20GB. "Inexpensive" is a relative term, but a new, high-quality 20GB
drive should be well under $100 these days.

Then pick up an inexpensive PCMCIA drive case and put your 12GB drive
in it and use it for backups.

HTH,

Bob

Yes, the first partition will have to be 8Gb or less. It makes the
most sense to be 8Gb. 12Gb will work for OS X and 9 but you might
want to consider getting something larger so you have plenty of room
to grow in.
