Re: Question about a Powerbook G3

2005-08-06 Thread Dan K
Malcolm Cornelius <> asks:
>What's the difference between old and new world?

quoting from page 76 in Apple's Lombard devnote:
The PowerBook G3 Series 1999 computer is different from previous PowerBook
computers in that it has no single, large ROM that contains many
components
of the Mac OS software, along with the 68K emulator, hardware
initialization,
and the nanokernel. Instead, a small ROM provides hardware initialization
functions and provides a mechanism to load the Mac OS ROM image into
RAM. The new software architecture that is centered around ROM-in-RAM and
its ramifications is called the NewWorld architecture.
There's more details in the devnote of course than I quote here. The
first gen new world machines included Lombard, the clamshell iBook, the
original iMac and the Blue & White PowerMac.

All PCI Macs have openfirmware, worlds old and new.

> What's the difference between old and new world?

Old World has the ROM toolbox in true ROM, and it resides there.

New World has the ROM toolbox in RAM, and that toolbox is actually loaded
from disk and copied into RAM, where it resides.

Old World has an 8 GB (or first 8 GB) limitation on the size of the boot
partition for X. New World has no limitation.

Examples ...

Wallstreet w/40 GB drive, must be partitioned into 8 GB and 32 GB
partitions, and the OS loaded into the 8 GB partition.

Lombard w/60 GB drive, no partitioning required, entire (and only) 60 GB
used as boot partition.

For Old World Macs, set the first partition to 7999 MB, and partition the
remainder from there.

How important is having this battery in here if it's
mostly plugged into AC and the main battery is so-so?

I'd rather not replace it if it won't cause any
problems!

I know the specs, I was merely asking what the dividing line was as the
Wallstreet was PCI and had open firmware

New world had the first USB.

However the lombard still has an external SCSI port and no firewire.
pismo was the first with firewire.

That is a Wallstreet or Wallstreet II:

This should be sufficient info to get you going with Ubuntu.

PRAM is an acronym for Parameter Ram, where a fairly large variety of
stuff about the computer is stored for use at boot time.

PRAM is maintained by a battery, when those go dead, the systems can
act quite unpredictably.

shows the procedure for
replacing it.

They also sell it, it's $40.
