Shawn, You are the MAN! I found a cast off sound card in my bag of crap.
Put it in and OS 9 booted right on up. Thanks a BILLION

Tom,
If I had one (that worked) I'd help you out. I bought a bad one off
eBay before I got mine fixed. I also remember having a strange
volume/mute control in the OS that would boot before the blank error
box showed on install. Seems like the volume only registered halfway
with barely a sound and the mute button worked strange. You may have
had some of these symptoms or I may have the specifics reversed. But
either way, the card charged my batteries, ran the laptop, etc. Just
no sound and no upgrading to 9.1 or 9.2.1, don't remember the
specifics. I just remember that blank box on install after the first
or second icon ( or CDEV ) loaded at the bottom left of the screen.

Check out Daniel Cota @ powerbooktech, he's got them for $40.
Here's the link:
http://www.powerbooktech.com/
Also check out the Giant Ball of Orange Static. It's a riot!
He treated me well when I bought a logic board from him. And he
diagnosed the problem and only charged me for the sound card when I
sent it to him because I had purchased the logic board earlier. I paid
about $95 for the card about 1-1/2 years ago.

That should solve your problems!
Good luck,
Shawn

The wallstreet with 512 megs ram, Blue Chip G4, 500mhz has stopped
booting.
I cannot boot into OS9. I get error box with no info after the first

Illegal Instruction when booting from CD. Bing a wall street it cannot

The Wallstreet is able to use OS X with out any problems up to and
including 10.2.8.

It is only with 10.3 that things get a little complicated.
If you move to OS 10 you will not want to go back to any of the classic
variants.

My Wallstreet which I am sending this on is a 233 mhz with cache so I
know it works.

With the G4 upgrade it should fly.
As to your boot problems, if you are able to boot from an OS 8 CD why do
you suspect the MOBO.

If the MOBO was faulty it would not boot from any system disk. As it is
booting to something it must be
working correctly to a partial level.

Have you tried any first aid software to perhaps repair any directory
faults. Have you tried to highlight
your CD as the start up disk as this will only tell the computer to
look in the CD for its boot system.

I generally have no problem booting to a CD system once it is assigned
as the start up disk.

It may be that the HD is faulty and the computer is looping trying to
find a usable System.

Hope this may Help
John.

Re: WallstreetI RIP

2005-01-20 Thread Andrew F.
Going back to classic MacOS was a bit painful at first when I set up a Kanga
for my daughter, but the more I played with it (I hadn't touched classic
MacOS since I switched to Windows in 98 and back to Mac in 04) the less
annoying it was.

There are some things I've found better in OS9 than OSX, at least for the
way this one will be used (the Launcher is much easier for a child than the
dock), and the system (OS 8.6) is MUCH faster than OSX (10.3.7). For
comparison, I am using both a 1GHz 12 G4 PowerBook (768 ram) and a 400MHz
Pismo PowerBook (512 ram), both with 5400rpm hard drives for OSX and a
250MHz Kanga G3 with the original 5GB 4200 rpm drive in OS 8.6, and
everything from booting to application launch is appreciably faster on the
older laptop, with the single exception of waking from sleep, which is MUCH
faster in OSX.

Just for giggles, I installed Office 2001 and carried that old Kanga around
with me for a day, and while much heavier than my two more modern machines,
the old Kanga with 8.6 was able to do everything I do on a computer with
speed and ease. Even Mozilla works well, though is slow to launch.

I wouldn't want to switch back to the classic Mac OS for stability reasons,
but it really isn't as bad as I thought it was.

Andrew

I realize you've reseated the CPU and memory, try doing the same for
both ends of the drive cable and any other sub-assemblies such as the
PMU. Have you reset the PMU

P.S. A WallStreet CAN run OS X, my previous laptop was such a beast.

2005-01-19 Thread Ben Dyer
I have a Wallstreet that was booting unreliably, with somewhat similar
symptoms (although booting from a CD was fine). The problem turned out
to be an almost-dead hard drive. Perhaps try removing it, then booting
from CD?

Cheers,
Ben

Tom,
I had the exact same problem over 18 months ago. Wallstreet G3/266, OS
8.x - OK; OS 9 - blank box after 1 or 2 cdev's loaded.
Replaced the AC/Sound card and problems went away. Proudly running
9.2.2 and 10.2.8 with 512m RAM with no more problems!
Try it, it will probably solve your problem. Wallstreet NOT R.I.P.
