From my experience, I would advise you to look for Aluminum over Titanium. They seem to have fewer problems. They are a more robust piece of machinery. Others may disagree. They are both very good. Assess your needs carefully; you may find that an iBook meets your needs for much less money. They were designed with students in mind. Be sure to check out what you can get with your educational discount. Other important differences between Powerbooks are fairly simple. They amount to speed of processor (not terribly significant unless doing something that requires high speed), amount of RAM (the more the better), and features such as Bluetooth, Airport, and the type of optical drive. Bluetooth allows you to run wireless devices such as keyboards and mice and sync with phones. In my experience Bluetooth is handy but not crucial. Airport allows you to connect to the internet wirelessly; if you don't get it, you'll probably wish you did. A g card (also called Airport Extreme) is better than a b card. A Superdrive allows you to burn DVDs and CDs; a Combo drive only burns CDs. Usefulness of Superdrive depends on whether you will want to put that much data on a disk. It's good to have if you don't have another back-up device. Crucial if you're planning on doing something like making movies. Otherwise not necessary. One other feature that may be useful to you is a lighted keyboard. It's easier to use in sometimes dimly lighted classrooms. Not crucial, but handy. You'd be wise to find a used book with AppleCare. Their portable nature makes Powerbooks vulnerable. The advantage of a used book is that it usually contains software that you might otherwise not be able to afford. Take full advantage of that. You're looking at a good time. For the past couple of years both hardware and software have been very good. You're likely to get a good machine. Your budget is limited, but not impossible. To get what I wanted, I had to go over my budget. I have not regretted that. It was money well spent. Do check out your educational discount. I'm a K-6 Tech Coach working with teachers at 27 schools. I use an ibook at work; making ppt presentations, developing newsletters, handling email, etc. It does a fine job in each of these areas, and since I have to lug it around to lots of sites, I appreciate the compact size. I just purchased my ibook and could not be happier. I am a big guy with big hands, and it is not cramped at all. In my opinion, I think the ibooks look cooler than the powerbooks in its sleek white plastic. I looked also at the 12 Powerbook, in the end, my decision to go with the ibook was the cost savings and the looks. I went with 12 size because I wanted the greatest portability after lugging my Wallstreet around for several years. As far as performance, I run the full suite of Adobe Macromedia graphics programs in OSX without any noticeable slow downs (much faster than in the Wallstreet). Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with working on a Pismo with Toshiba's 60 GB 5400rpm/16mb cache HD in tandem with 1 GIG ram? I noticed the HD and another 512 stick would run about $300 for the upgrade. I'm using Abobe Illustrator 10 and was hoping to get some more speed out of my PB. AI 10 seems a bit pokey under OSX compaired to 9. I currently have a 400 MHZ Pismo w/ IBM 30 GIG 4200rpm w/ 768 RAM and OS 10.2.6. Any thoughts? Thanks! I would say more ram/faster hd would only help your situation if you found yourself paging information out to the hard disk frequently while under illustrator. Of course it's unlikely that any new machines will actually be available immediately, but at least you'll know the overall situation. I won't go over the ground that others have already covered. One thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned is the ability of the Powerbooks to run a second monitor at a different resolution from the LCD screen. I have recently bought a 12 Powerbook, mainly for the portability, but when I'm in my office here at home I generally hook it up to a good 19 monitor and run that at 1280 x 1024. When I'm settling down for a Photoshop Elements session it's nice to have that extra screen area to use. Only the Powerbooks can do this; the iBooks are limited to mirroring, at the same resolution as the LCD screen. Oh, I also learned that the 12 Powerbook, with its mini-VGA connector, certainly benefits from using a high-quality VGA lead to the monitor. The crappy cheap lead I was initially using caused screen ghosting, and had me worried for a while. Switching to a good VGA lead changed everything. Max the RAM to 1 GB, and yes the 5400 rpm, 16Mb cache will make a difference. I have the 40 Gig, 5400 rpm, 16 Mb cache model and 1 GB Ram on a Pismo 500, Photoshop 7 and AI 10 work pretty well. The speed tests I've seen put the iBook even or faster than the little Al Book, except when using software that uses the G4's altivec. IBooks get more run time when on battery power, especially the 14. What you describe your wife will be doing the iBook will handle no sweat. Worked as computer tech in High School this past year. We had approx. 120 ibooks in use, around 40 used by teachers. Never heard one complaint about speed and most of them were using 600mhz/700mhz ibooks doing exactly what you say your wife will do. We used iBooks to do all our presentations. Very easy. Bought my son a 800mhz 12 iBook for Christmas, we haven't been disappointed. That said, the practical advantages to the Al book are it has airport extreme, they're now making Gig ram chips for it (doubles ibook)(in the OS X era that can be important), and it has the way cool aluminum exterior. If I were you I'd buy an ibook and spend what I saved not getting the al book on an ipod.(Apple had special deal on ibook/ipod purchase). In a year, if it's not fast enough, sell it and buy a new G5 laptop. Just my 2 cents.
