2005-05-10 Thread Gregory J. Smith
If your using it with a 'book, then they aren't exactly portable. I'm
looking to use one with my PBG4, so I can use 802.11g and so I can
get a better signal than the internal antennas. I've got a DWL-G122,
but apparently you need a certain revision for it to work with the Mac.

Both D-Link and Netgear
make them. Both require access to AC power
to work. These are really useful for putting wired-only systems on a
wireless network; they're less practical for laptop use.

The USB dongles are far more portable.

Because the USB one is the size of a memory stick, and doesn't require
a power brick. It sucks to have a nice portable iBook and have to lug

All the ones I've seen need their own power supply, not too portable.
Personally I'd spend the bucks for an Airport card.

BTW, the airport cards I've seen on e-bay are going for $60-80 which
is less than they were originally.

that's supposedly the DWL-122 USB adapter. I have tried this one out last
summer and it was causing random and frequent kernel panics on a Lombard
running Panther. I can't recall what version of panther it was. DWL-122
firmware was the latest at that point in time (can't recall the version
either), so were the OS X drivers.

I just reckon they have since replaced it with the DWL-G122, ditching Mac
support altogether.

I have one of the dlink adapters and it worked quite well under

I've just gone wireless myself, but with a HP 5850 (802.11b built-in).
I was seriously considering the Epson C84WN (wireless networking, 802.11b

Print with no wires up to150 feet away? Networked. OS X and 9 :-)

Re: wireless USB

2004-04-21 Thread Mike Kauspedas
I'm using the IOexperts driver (google it) and a Microsoft MN-520
PCMCIA card in my powerbook G3, both work great! Using it right now. I
know its not USB, but I heard a lot of probs with the D-Link USB and
Mac OS. Like kernel panic kinds of probs, but never tried it. hope that
helps,

Mike

I did some research of both the D-Link and the Linksys systems when I went
wireless (chose D-Link because of their Mac support). If I remember
correctly, neither company's USB wireless access point was listed to work
with Macs (OS9 or OSX), only Windows 98 and above.

If someone knows different, then I would be interested also.

Linksys doesn't write drivers for Mac OS. If the USB dongle requires
drivers (it must, I don't believe there are drivers for these things
built into the Mac OS), it won't work with your Mac.

IIRC, MacWireless has a USB adapter for wireless...

Occasionally I install wireless networks for various people (side
money)... I have run into huge problems with the USB linksys wireless
interfaces. The first one was on a Windows ME machine, and I blamed it
on ME. The second one happened two weeks ago on a brand new Dell with
WinXP - it was a pain to install and it would lock the machine after
being on for less than five minutes (on that machine I replaced it with
a PCI version and it's been perfect ever since). Now I know this might
not have anything to do with them working on apple OS's but as for me,
whether in apple, windows, linux or whatever I'm staying away from
those cards. I'll vouch for their other stuff though (i'm on network
with their 54g access point going through their cable router w/4 port
switch then through their cable modem - not to mention the cute little
5 port switch that the access point plugs into - on my airport extreme
equipped al pb)

Most probably they're called 'Don't exist' .

If you printer is capable of running via the network, you could
probably attach it to a wired ethernet port on the router, but the
scanner's gotta be connected via the cable.

There are emerging standards ('Bluetooth') that could possibly be used
for this sort of thing, but I don't think it would be at all useful for
scanning, and printing would be slow...this is designed for data
transfer between things like PDA's and cell phones, and is rather slow
in terms of data transfer.

Some printers (I know several models of HP laser printers do) support
IRDA for printing, I don't know if the ones that do support it on the
Mac.

AFAIK, no one has ever made a wireless scanner.

Hello -

More details needed. What kind of interfaces do the printer and
scanner have, and what do you mean by "connect wirelessly" to them? If
you mean that you want to reach them from your wireless connected
Powerbook, but they can be hard-wired to the switch ports on the D-Link
device, that's one thing - if you want the printer and scanner
themselves to use wireless connections it's another.

The printer will need a network print server. This can be a dedicated
device that connects to the printer, part of a network switch or
router, or a service provided by a computer that the printer attaches
to. If you are using IP-based computers only, LPR/LPD print servers
are the most common and will work well. However, if you have legacy
Apple equipment that requires AppleTalk over Ethernet, you will need to
find a combination print server to support it.

Attaching a scanner to the network may be more problematic, because
AFAIK there is no standard network protocol for communicating with
them, and the manufacturer's software may not be capable of working
with them in any way other than a direct connection. You are likely to
need to consult the manufacturer's information for the specific scanner
to see what the options are.

KeS
