I keep hearing that heat will release the glue. Epoxy is not a
thermoplastic. If you heat it, it won't melt, as it gets hotter it
turns brown and eventually carbonizes.

So what is this glue? Does heat really release it?

As for the hinge fix, I've heard from a few people who've done it themselves
and the consensus is that it's hard, but doable, and you will end up with a
screen bezel/frame that may have a slightly homey look, i.e. where you
pressed it back together with krazy glue. Though perfectly functional. Which
to me seems a nice step up from using a hingeless Ti-Book with an external
monitor.

Well heck with waiting for instructions from other folks, my
cracked-screen 400 TiBook arrived and I didn't wait to rip it to bits.

I managed to strip the display down without too much damage to the
casing. _LOTS_ of patience and a hairdryer for heat still resulted in
some damage which I fettled as best I could. I attached the
temporarily-taped-together display to the 550 . . .

Sadly, as I had feared, my uncracked LCD turns out to be faulty too:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/images/tibook/tibooklcd.jpg

Anyone have an idea if this is a fixable type of fault? Is it the LCD or
maybe the 550 PB? The PB displays fine on an external CRT however. The
cable worked fine with the cracked LCD on the 400 but I haven't yet tried
this LCD + this cable combo on the 400. The PCBs on the cracked LCD are
probably OK, any use attemping some sort of swap there?

Or should I forget about the whole thing, break-n-sell these two 'Books
and just wait for a 'nuther day?

Anyone, anyone? Nope, it's not in the manual, Apple only describes that

 the early TiBook's.

I know what you mean. I've been looking for some info on replacing the hinge
on a TiBook G4/550. Can anyone point me in the right direction for DIY
repairs? I know some companies do the job for a lot less than Apple, but
said prices are still in the $500 range, plus shipping (I'm in Europe).

I came across a G4/550 with combo drive at a good price, though it has a
busted right hinge (the guy uses it with an external monitor and it works
fine). I also see right (and left) hinges selling on ebay in the $100 range.
If I could do the repair job myself it'd be a great deal; there'd be no
advantage in getting a company to do the repair job at $400-500.

I do have some experience in piecing broken powerbooks into good working
Macs, including 1400s, 3400s and Pismos. I've also done screen replacements
on these. Though obviously the TiBook screen is in a whole different league.
I have the Gigabit Ethernet takeapart manual and I can see that the job is
not for the faint of heart.

If anyone wants to advise for or against, please let me know. And if anyone
has any info on replacing the hinge yourself, any and all info would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chris

Ti-Book display take-apart?

2003-09-27 Thread Dan K
Anyone, anyone? Nope, it's not in the manual, Apple only describes that
module's replacement. Interestingly the 12 manual _does_ describe
display disassembly though sadly that module is completely different than
the early TiBook's.

My story: I bought a 550 with a messed-up display, the LCD appears to be
intact though its functionality has yet to be determined. Also I just
bought a 400 with a cracked LCD which appears to be otherwise intact. My
PLAN is to use the ?good? LCD and the ?good? display case parts to
create one good display. I have the service manuals for both models but
those only reference display repairs as module replacement.

My questions: Can anyone tell me if I'm tackling the impossible, or _if_
possible help with some hints, tips, pointers or even just greatly
appreciated words of encouragement? Are there any web sites detailing any
of this? I googled for hours but found little, mostly grumbles about how
Apple has done the world a disservice with their crummy product design.

What I did find was slim: 1) an Icelandic fellow's half-hearted attempt
to fix with some bits of Al sheet and epoxy. NOT really what I had in
mind and I understand it didn't hold up for too long anyhow - and 2) a
guy who worked for a special effects company who fabbed
replacement/reinforcing parts from Al stock. That second sounded pretty
interesting but I could find no further details.

As for the actual disassembly I found nothing. Dangit! I _know_ somebody
out there has done this but they are sure keeping their secrets well.
Anyway, here's what I see based on the bits I've already got:

The back (outer) panel is made of Ti and I'm pretty sure the face (inner)
is Al. The face is attached to the LCD's face with adhesive. It's not a
thermally set adhesive but heat did seem soften it a bit. I used a hair
dryer to heat the face while I peeled it off the LCD, but it got pretty
bent up in the process. It appears to have no structural role based on
what I see, I _think_ one could use an otherwise-complete display without
it. BTW I was very careful to not heat the LCD, just the face piece.

The rear section consists of the panel itself, a pair of (ABS?) plastic
spacers around each top corner of the LCD, and below which the hinge
supports must wrap around each lower corner of the LCD. Is there some
sort of filler section on the lower side of the LCD? I haven't got that
part sadly. The plastic spacers and the hinge supports apparently are
attached to the rear panel with a medium gray colored adhesive. It
appears to be thermally sensitive but is probably not a thermal type
glue. This same type of adhesive is used in the bottom section of the PB
as well, in areas such as the join between the sides and top as sort of a
fillet.

I think the two halves (LCD/face and backpanel/hinges) are joined with 4
screws, two on each side of the display. They _may_ also be held together
with a heatset adhesive, at least I found traces of a clear thermal glue
in a couple of spots, though that could have been put there as part of a
previous repair attempt.

Unless I can find some really useful info out there, I'm thinking I'm
gonna end up creating a new web page on this topic . . .

Many TsIA,

Dan K

Anyone, anyone? Nope, it's not in the manual, Apple only describes that
module's replacement. Interestingly the 12 manual _does_ describe
display disassembly though sadly that module is completely different
than
the early TiBook's.

My story: I bought a 550 with a messed-up display, the LCD appears to
be
intact though its functionality has yet to be determined. Also I just
bought a 400 with a cracked LCD which appears to be otherwise intact.
My
PLAN is to use the ?good? LCD and the ?good? display case parts to
create one good display. I have the service manuals for both models but
those only reference display repairs as module replacement.

My questions: Can anyone tell me if I'm tackling the impossible, or
_if_
possible help with some hints, tips, pointers or even just greatly
appreciated words of encouragement? Are there any web sites detailing
any
of this? I googled for hours but found little, mostly grumbles about
how
Apple has done the world a disservice with their crummy product design.

I'm not clear on what is wrong with the display from the 550 but...

I thought the top half of the 2 machines are the same. Can you not
just put the good top half onto the good bottom half with a minimum
of effort, and not attempt to swap the lcd into a different frame?

I think what the original author meant is that he has a good LCD with a
crappy frame, and a crappy LCD with a good frame. Combining the 2, and you
have a good LCD with a good frame (or a crappy LCD with a crappy frame...)
