Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
Thanks for your response! The actual data I was looking for were the mail folders, messages, rules, etc, which I finally found in the Documents folder. I wasn't interested in any other program or user settings/data from the old Powerbook. I'm good to go now, though. All I did was install Office 2004 on the new iBook, turn on file sharing on the old Powerbook, then import all the data I wanted into Entourage 2004 by selecting the data files on the Powerbook over the network. It worked great! I then imported the same data from Entourage into Apple Mail, just so my wife can use both programs and eventually go with whichever one she likes best. Thank all of you for your help! The iBook is now loaded, configured, and ready to go for my wife's birthday this Friday! (Yep, she's a New Year's baby!) Actually, I'm having some issues with the Airport Extreme card and integration with Active Directory, but both are minor issues that I may bring up in other topic discussions. Thanks again, and Happy New Year!! Mike Otherwise, there's got to be some way to export the data from the Powerbook to the iBook first? I found some scripts written by a gentleman name Paul Berkowitz that will perform this export/import for $20. data? If you're talking about email, I think all you need with entourage is dragging the folders to the desktop, which will create a unix mailbox (I think). These will import into Entourage nicely, I'm pretty sure. I don't know what files in OS 9.2 contain the data I need to export. What *is* the data? There are lots of info that you may need, like login and passwords. Make a list of what you can think of, with details of your terms for it, in what app you use the data. I think you should *backup* all the data and keep the old machine intact for a while in case you forget something, but don't worry about where it is for now. Try and remember first what you need to bring. Most OS 9 prefs and so on, won't be exportable and you need to set them anew in your OS X apps. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Thanks! I got the iBook yesterday, and I love it! I'm sure my wife will too. She's always asking why the Wallstreet takes so long to load web pages. Ha! I've got 512MB of memory in that sucker, but the ol' processor just can't hack it. Anyway, I believe the type of migration you're referring to is an upgrade on the same machine, right? Otherwise, there's got to be some way to export the data from the Powerbook to the iBook first? I found some scripts written by a gentleman name Paul Berkowitz that will perform this export/import for $20. I guess I'll just have to buck up and pay the piper, eh? This stinks because it's so easy with MS Outlook/Winders. But this Mac stuff is a much different animal. I even know a little UNIX (Solaris), but that still doesn't help me since OS 9.2 is not based on UNIX. I don't know what files in OS 9.2 contain the data I need to export. I'm stumped. Thanks again, Mike I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I believe that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a number of applications, including previous versions of Entourage. That said, I use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both good tools. I need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange server at work, and it's been great for that. Good luck with the upgrade. -Hal -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I use an IMAP server for my email and use the Mail app in OSX also. This keeps all of my email on the server. So I can go to ANY other machine running OSX, or even winders, as long as the mail client supports IMAP (Exchange does, so does Entourage, but Mail seems to work better). Connect to the mail server and wala, all my emails, folders, etc. Works great for on-the-road if you don't have your computer with you and have to borrow one. I do it this way so I can see the exact same emails from home or work...since I do a lot of customer correspondence from home. Now, if your work server doesn't support IMAP, then it won't help you. And since you currently are using POP, I don't know if switching to IMAP will create copies of everything on your computer, on the IMAP server. Just a thought, would definitely save you next time. Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
Greetings, I bought my wife a 233MHz Wallstreet last year for her birthday, and she's used it so darn much that I'm getting her a new 1GHz iBook G4 this year. My question is this: she's now using Entourage 2001 for e-mail and she has a few messages that she's archived for reference. What is the best way to export these saved messages to the new iBook? She'll have Entourage 2004 on the iBook, but I'm thinking of maybe getting her to try out the mail program that comes with the Mac. What are your opinions on that topic? (Two questions, really!) I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my calendar program, and what is my e-mail program, and use small, fast programs that are designed to do one thing and one thing well. Depend on common data-types for inter-program communication. If I want integration, then I can do it. If not, I don't have to. Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
So everyone on your network has to spend an extra $400 just to use supported E-mail, because *you* like it? Please, We are a large scale operation. I included in my budget a site license for Office 2004 at $208 a copy. So nobody had to shell any money, except me. Jeez, I've heard of BOFH's, but that takes the cake! Not even worth a reply. I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my calendar program, and what is my e-mail program, and use small, fast programs that are designed to do one thing and one thing well. That's works for you, not for our work environment. Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution? Simple, when I have to support over a 100 Macs and a few PC's, I want them all running the same software. It's easier for me to manage. Plus, in case you haven't heard yet, 95% of the world uses Microsoft Office. When your working for a large company, with lots of clients, compatibility is a must. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Ph acy Information Technology Group Regards, Aaron Willems IT Administrator -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
Thanks for the advice. You guys are going crazy with this! Now, how about migrating saved messages from Entourage 2001 to 2004? No Exchange involved, only POP mail. Thanks again! Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I believe that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a number of applications, including previous versions of Entourage. That said, I use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both good tools. I need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange server at work, and it's been great for that. Good luck with the upgrade. -Hal On Dec 21, 2004, at 3:38 PM, Michael Clarke wrote: Thanks for the advice. You guys are going crazy with this!
