Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-29 Thread Michael Clarke
Thanks for your response!
The actual data I was looking for were the mail folders, messages,
rules, etc, which I finally found in the Documents folder. I wasn't
interested in any other program or user settings/data from the old
Powerbook.

I'm good to go now, though. All I did was install Office 2004 on the
new iBook, turn on file sharing on the old Powerbook, then import all
the data I wanted into Entourage 2004 by selecting the data files on the
Powerbook over the network. It worked great! I then imported the same
data from Entourage into Apple Mail, just so my wife can use both
programs and eventually go with whichever one she likes best.

Thank all of you for your help! The iBook is now loaded, configured,
and ready to go for my wife's birthday this Friday! (Yep, she's a New
Year's baby!) Actually, I'm having some issues with the Airport Extreme
card and integration with Active Directory, but both are minor issues
that I may bring up in other topic discussions.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year!!
Mike
Otherwise, there's got to be some way to export the data from the
Powerbook to the iBook first? I found some scripts written by a
gentleman name Paul Berkowitz that will perform this export/import for
$20.
data? If you're talking about email, I think all you need with entourage
is dragging the folders to the desktop, which will create a unix mailbox
(I think). These will import into Entourage nicely, I'm pretty sure.
I don't know what files in OS 9.2 contain the data I need to export.
What *is* the data? There are lots of info that you may need, like login
and passwords. Make a list of what you can think of, with details of your
terms for it, in what app you use the data.
I think you should *backup* all the data and keep the old machine intact
for a while in case you forget something, but don't worry about where it
is for now. Try and remember first what you need to bring. Most OS 9
prefs and so on, won't be exportable and you need to set them anew in
your OS X apps.

I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I
believe that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a
number of applications, including previous versions of Entourage.
That said, I use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both
good tools. I need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange
server at work, and it's been great for that.
   Good luck with the upgrade.

I use an IMAP server for my email and use the Mail app in OSX also.
This keeps all of my email on the server. So I can go to ANY other
machine running OSX, or even winders, as long as the mail client
supports IMAP (Exchange does, so does Entourage, but Mail seems to work
better). Connect to the mail server and wala, all my emails, folders,
etc. Works great for on-the-road if you don't have your computer with
you and have to borrow one.

I do it this way so I can see the exact same emails from home or
work...since I do a lot of customer correspondence from home.

Now, if your work server doesn't support IMAP, then it won't help you.
And since you currently are using POP, I don't know if switching to
IMAP will create copies of everything on your computer, on the IMAP
server. Just a thought, would definitely save you next time.

Another idea I just had. Can you use Entourage, import your email from
Mail, then transfer/export this Entourage file to your new laptop and
open it/import in Mail?

Dunno if that will work or not, I've never tried, just an idea. Can
Mail import Entourage email? I am pretty sure that Entourage will
import Mail files, just not sure about the other direction.

What is this urge to have gigantic all-in-one things?

I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my

Depend on common data-types for inter-program communication. If I want

Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution?

I like Entourage but agree that all eggs in one basket can be dangerous.
I have had a few dangerous moments with corrupted databases using

Entourage really is bloatware, even though it has great tools. I want a

Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

Greetings,

I use it as well, although its performance is somewhat annoying (we are an
exchange site) -- its update methodology with respect to exchange is annoying.
But the integration with exhange is undeniably rocking cool. I've never used

the mac made this possible (in a windows shop).

I agree Entourage 2004 rocks. The project center is awesome. The calendar,
project center, and Notes all work together seamlessly. I won't support
Apple mail on my Network. I tell everyone if they want me to support their
Email account they need to use Entourage. Apple needs to integrate iCal and
the Address book into Mail to make it a competitive application.

I personally love Entourage. Mail is lacking some very important features.
Like the ability to read a thread and after deleting having it go on to the
next message without opening a new window.

But the integration with exhange is undeniably rocking cool. I've never used
apple mail, but did the pc to mac conversion about a year ago -- ms office for
the mac made this possible (in a windows shop).

Any tips on how to do this? I am about to integrate a small Mac group into
a large company's Exchange server for mail purposes. They are currently
using outlook and hate it.

Jeez, I've heard of BOFH's, but that takes the cake!
Gee, lets throw in word processing, photo manipulations and
refrigeration of tasty beverages into the mix. We'll call it
iMailWordCalAddPhotoFridge. It'll come on 76 CD's, take three hours to
install, two electrical outlets and a water connection, and if you
spill a coke in the fridge, you lose all your e-mail.

What is this urge to have gigantic all-in-one things?
I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my
calendar program, and what is my e-mail program, and use small, fast
programs that are designed to do one thing and one thing well.

Depend on common data-types for inter-program communication. If I want
integration, then I can do it. If not, I don't have to.

Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution?

Please, We are a large scale operation. I included in my budget a site
license for Office 2004 at $208 a copy. So nobody had to shell any money,
except me.

Jeez, I've heard of BOFH's, but that takes the cake!

Not even worth a reply.

That's works for you, not for our work environment.

Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution?

Simple, when I have to support over a 100 Macs and a few PC's, I want them
all running the same software. It's easier for me to manage. Plus, in case
you haven't heard yet, 95% of the world uses Microsoft Office. When your
working for a large company, with lots of clients, compatibility is a must.

Thanks for the advice. You guys are going crazy with this! Now, how
about migrating saved messages from Entourage 2001 to 2004? No Exchange
involved, only POP mail.

Thanks again!

Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-21 Thread Hal
I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I believe
that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a number of
applications, including previous versions of Entourage. That said, I
use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both good tools. I
need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange server at work,
and it's been great for that.

Good luck with the upgrade.
