I don't know about preventing them from being able to format it, but what about making an encrypted disk image on the drive? Disk Utility will let you customize the size, so just play with it until you get one that is as big as will fit on the jump drive. Just a thought. Two questions (sort of OT)
My first is in regards to my iPod. It has lately acquired a very audible whirring noise. Not to be read as loud, but it is louder than when I first bought it last summer. I posted this to the apple forums but got little help on the issue there. One guy assumed i was using a PC, despite the fact that my iBook was listed on my post as the computer I used, and recommended I defragment the iPod, but have found no material regarding this in the iPod help files or on the apple site. Is this possible? Is this likely to be the problem? Should I just ignore it? Is it even a problem? Second is the issue of USB jump drives. The one I had was recently stolen, so I lost it and all of the work, school and personal data I had saved on it. I would say that the noise coming out of your iPod is probably the hard drive. That's the only component that has moving parts in the iPod. As for your 2nd question, I don't know how you can protect a jump drive. I'm assuming that by jump drive, you mean some kind of USB flash memory thingy? -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Response: Two questions (sort of OT)
Brian: I have a jumpdrive (unprotected) ... very handy, convenient ... my OS X PowerBook always mounts it, sometimes XP is iffy about whether it sees it or not (strange). But then all of you guys know of the quirks of Mr. Gates endeavors. There are some USB jump drives that now have a thumbprint or fingerprint security http://www.cputopia.com/cputopia-biometric-128mb-usb-flash-disk- thumbprint.html I think there are other brands entering the mix, too. On 4/13/05 2:31 PM, Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Your iPod whirring is the hard drive and if it were due to a really fragged drive you would probably be hearing a whir and clicking or scratching too. The clicking/scratching would be the heads moving back and forth seeking the next cluster. You are likely to notice the whirring sound more in a quiet environment and when you are looking for it. I suspect it is nothing to worry about. As for your jump drive - having lost one myself (actually I suspect it was stolen by a student hoping to find test information) - I simply created an encrypted disk image and put it on the drive. Just make it a wee bit smaller than the drive. Sure, it can be formatted but at least the scum can't access my data. If you want more protection, on Engadget I saw a jump drive with biometric security...a bit overkill unless you work for SD 6. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
