Re: WS repair follow-up

2003-08-18 Thread ap
I just got 3 dead batteries from ebay ( no light ) and revive them
with VST charger , they old 3 hours each
I just got a good deal

Just a quick note to say thanks to all on the list who responded to
my WallStreet power/sound board replacement question.

I have now replaced the board, and the sound is now back and the
PowerBook attempts to charge the battery! Not bad, considering the
power/sound board only cost me five pounds (about 4 US dollars).

I think the battery has been discharged to the point of no return,
though. Now when the battery is inserted, the second LED on the
battery comes on and then goes off. I have tried the battery reset
application, and also starting up in both OS9 and OSX but this
didn't make any difference. The battery didn't hold much charge,
anyway, so it looks like I will need to source a new one. I haven't
tried disconnecting the power for that long, but the PRAM settings
(date and time, etc) are no longer reset, which is good.

The process was easier than I thought, and I found the only fiddly
bit was reattaching the display cables. Both the PowerBook G3 pdf
file but particularly the PowerBooktech.com website were useful
(thanks to Shawn Harley for that link).

Second that. If you plug your Wallstreet in for at least overnight, more is
better, often you can revive a tired battery. The backup battery requires at
least overnight charging to kickstart, and I have heard that 48 hours plugged
in time without use is optimum for reviving the backup battery. Main battery
paradoxically requires less charging time.

You have to also unlearn habits you might have learned with NiCad and NiMH
batteries...a LiIon battery can be successfully topped off without
depleting it completely. In fact, letting a LiIon battery completely
discharge can fatally damage it. At least, this is what I have heard...

P.S. - Where did you find the ac/sound card for $4?
