My Wallstreet sat unused for a long period of time, and a good battery would no longer take a charge or show up in the control strip(OS 9). I zapped PRAM, reset Power Manager, and left "bad" battery in Wallstreet, shut down and plugged in to AC for a few days undisturbed. Battery now works fine. Worth a try.

I think the battery has been discharged to the point of no return, though. Now when the battery is inserted, the second LED on the battery comes on and then goes off. I have tried the battery reset application, and also starting up in both OS9 and OSX but this didn't make any difference. The battery didn't hold much charge, anyway, so it looks like I will need to source a new one. I haven't tried disconnecting the power for that long, but the PRAM settings (date and time, etc) are no longer reset, which is good.
The process was easier than I thought, and I found the only fiddly bit was reattaching the display cables. Both the PowerBook G3 pdf file but particularly the PowerBooktech.com website were useful (thanks to Shawn Harley for that link).
