That's pretty amazing since no iBook ever came with SCSI ;-) I presume
you mean Firewire disk mode.

Was Panther on the iBook before Tiger? If so, is Tiger slower than
Panther had been?

I'm wondering whether to upgrade some older iMacs currently running
Panther, and I've heard Tiger runs faster than (or at least as fast
as) Panther, so this would be feasible. Once we upgrade, I prefer
that the systems we support (father's, elderly friend's from church)
also be upgraded to the same OS as it makes support over the phone
much easier to do!

Tiger runs noticeably faster on my Pismo than Panther which was
noticeably faster than Jag.

Officially per our campus Apple engineering contact, Tiger should run
faster on supported systems provided you have enough ram. He says 256
is ok if all you want to do is boot it up and have it sit there, but
reasonable use needs 512M.

These have 384 and are used almost entirely for reading email via
dial-up connection, with the very occasional web site visit. One's
officially unsupported, the other's open to interpretation. So I'm
specifically asking about its relative speed (i.e. relative to Panther)
on UNsupported sytems. I seem to remember one person here who thought
it was faster on his wallstreet??

Getting it installed and running is the main impediment of
'unsupported' systems.

Once this is accomplished, relative speed on the same system should be
roughly the same for supported and unsupported systems, so yes, it
should run faster.

WS is not supported for panther too! but I managed to install it with XPF

Try, as soon as it is available the version that installs Tiger, with
XPostFacto (XPF).

Re: Wallstreet Tiger

2005-05-17 Thread Andrew F.
The Wallstreet on Panther is much like the Lombard on Tiger, meaning it is
for the most part compatible, but intentionally restricted only by the
Install program on the CD or DVD. I used the exact same method to install
Tiger on my wife's Lombard and it works great, but the Wallstreet is simply
not Tiger-compatible.

A similar analogy is the Kanga G3 PowerBook, which will not load OSX without
XPostFacto. The Kanga has hardware that just will not run OSX without
XPostFacto adding the necessary drivers to OSX. The Wallstreet has an older
video card than the Lombard or Pismo, not to mention different motherboard
components. One or more of those components, while supported natively with
a driver in Panther, is no longer supported in Tiger.

Panther is the best you will get on a WallStreet until XPostFacto adds Tiger
support for a WallStreet.

Honestly, I'd be happy you got Panther running, many WallStreet owners
aren't able to. I didn't expect Tiger to work on the Lombard, and consider
it entirely a bonus that it does, not an entitlement on a 6-year-old laptop.

Andrew

Wallstreet Tiger

In a never ending quest to keep my Wallstreet going I attempted a Tiger
install. I tried this the same way I did Panther, by removing the hard-drive,
putting it in a firewire casing and installing from my Tower. It installs fine
and runs great on the tower, but when I transfer the hard-drive back to the
Wallstreet I get a no disk flasherany ideas?

Actually I reformatted and performed a clean install (via FW target
mode, sorry, not SCSI mode): it is not the slower that Panther,
but I have to say that the previous configuration was the result of 3
years of upgrades and software installations, so I guess a clean
install of 10.3 could do better...
