Re: Wallstreet Dead
Very interesting and useful advise. The first pattern I've noticed is that I can boot from an installer disc or Tech Tools but if something goes wrong and it freezes or I shut down to switch CDs then I cannot reboot again until after the PB has rested unplugged for a number of hours, say overnight. So I booted from Tech Tools and ran the Analysis. It reported only minor repairs required. Then I tried to Optimize (HD was very fragmented) but received dialog informing me of insufficient free space to Optimize a file. Close TT, delete a folder from the HD Try to Optimize again. Another dialog same information for an index file Close TT and try to open Sherlock to find index file Computer freezes. The only way I could get out of the freeze was to unplug and pull the battery. Then, unable boot from CD. Hear Start Up chime and then nothing. Command + Control +Power. Press C and hold it down. Is ineffective. If the PB boots it boots only from the CD without prompting shift | fn | ctrl | power key Works to shut down. At least it does the humm -whirr then when I press the power button I get the start up chime but that's all (when it is in it's uncoooperative mood) Reset is standard three fingered salute, Apple-Control-Power. Sometimes gives me a chime , but that's all. I'd start with booting off the OS 9 CD, formatting the HD then do an install. I think I'll try this next time it boots. I have 9.2 and 9.1 options. Is one preferred on the Wallstreet over the other? Thank you. Cliff -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Any and all advise is appreciated. HI and welcome! There might be a few things that are wrong so it could be a little more difficult to find out what's going on. That being said, do you have a system install CD that you know to be good? If so, the next thing would be to put the battery back in and plug it. Leave it plugged for something like 24 hours. To start up an apparently dead PowerBook, you can use Command + Control + Power. Press C and hold it down. If the CD is good and the CD-ROM drive is still working, it should boot. If it doesn't there could be a couple of things that prevent it from booting. The CD-ROM drive might have turned out bad. After a few years of use, the processor daughtercard might have come loose, which would explain an erratic behavior where sometimes it would start and at other times, it would not. Or it could be a loose RAM DIMM. Try to remove the keyboard. There should be the processor heatsink underneath the keyboard. Once you remove the heatsink, you will have access to the processor daugthercard which contains the processor, of course, and also the RAM. I would suggest removing all the RAM chips and put them back, making sure they are properly seated in the slot. Then, put back the processor daughtercard. Check where the pins connecting the card to the motherboard are, then apply most of your pressure in that corner. It takes more force than you would imagine for such a fragile thing to seat it properly. See how it goes and let us know of your progress... -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] foo /foo/ 1. interj. Ideas on ways to get it going since I don't have other batteries for it? Thanks in advance. I had a similar problem. I solved mine by the following with help from the other listers: My W/S would not boot at all with the battery installed AC adaptor connected. This I found was due to a dead battery PRAM battery. If I removed the main battery it would boot with the AC adaptor connected but when the battery was installed the W/S would not recognize it and thus not charge it. I have found out that with a dead battery the PRAM will not charge as the W/S needs a small amount of charge in the main battery in order to charge the PRAM. I then found out that a Apple programme called Battery Reset 2 would rectify a problem of the W/Snot being unable to recognize the battery. I found a copy of this programme by finding in on Version Tracker then installed it. This solved the problem as the battery was now seen by the W/S, charging began and the PRAM also as the date time kept correct each time it was switched off. The W/S would now also boot from the battery without the AC adaptor or with battery left in and adaptor connected. Hope this helps.
