leaving the backup battery out is more for the pmu and while this may or
may have not been related to the modem being invisible, I wanted to get
as restarted as possible.

Ok, I meant I left the *backup* battery out for 15 minutes.

I see, but I seem to recall seeing a post that indicated
a keystroke initiation of NVRAM reset.

When I had this problem with a WS II (PDQ) using Panther, I made a full
reinstall including PRAM and NVRAM reset, leaving the battery out and
reformatting the drive. On reinstallation the modem was found. I'm not
sure what had happened, but I wouldn't deem it as dead, before you've
started over like this.
The modem could have course have died on you.

Yes, definitely! That can easily happen.
In fact, that's probably what it is.

I have the exact same symptoms, but on a TiBook (1GHz). I had guessed
that the modem might be unseated, but the trouble is it is very hard
to reach (having to disassemble almost everyting); about the same is
true of the Wallstreet (this part I know because I once - a few years
ago - saw a technician replace the modem in my Wallstreet; never got
to fix the TiBook because I have little use for the modem in this
machine).

Ooops sorry. running OS 9.1 on the Wallstreet.
and I'm not running Apple works.
I'm running the basic same set up on the Wallstreet
as I am on my 3400.
I'm dialed up on the 3400 right now.
Though interestingly after initial dial up success on the 3400
it's modem got "lost" A TechTools run and Optimization
cured the problem. That's when I tried the same "cure" on the Wallstreet
without success.

I had problems with imac modems not responding and I searched on the
web and found an answer. I don't recall exactly what the process was,
but if you have appleworks, the solution was to go into appleworks and
there is a communications (along with word processing, spreadsheet,
etc) choice when the program opens up. Then you type in a code and the
modem works again. Sorry it's not technical, but I don't have the info
here.
