I agree that it's a crap shoot diagnosing the problem without testing the
batteries in another machine or external charger.  That said, I took a shot in
the dark with a Wallstreet and replaced the Power and Charge Card when
batteries stopped charging or being recognized.  In my case, the problem was
fixed.  It's quite a trip, disassembling the machine to get to the card.  On
another Wallstreet, I was able to fix the problem by "simply" reseating the old
Power and Charge Card (it was a VERY loose connection, I wonder if that's
common?) ... you may wish to try the suggestion of reseating all possible
offending components before buying parts.
Good Luck !

Missed that.

I have had 3rd party batteries that were bad on arrival and never charged,
an external charger is useful for that.

Not sure which board you are talking about here.

I'd strip the machine, check that all the boards are correctly seated - the
Charge Board can become detached from the Power Board.

Check also that the EMI shielding near the DC socket isn't shorting to the
metal plug.

Beyond that, you really need a good machine to test with, other wise you are
buying parts at random - there are 5 or 6 boards that could be at fault
here.

I've several times found a bad Sound Board can stop batteries charging,
after that I'd suspect the Charge, PMU, Power in that order, but that's just
my experiences.

I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process. If it
doesn't, that would indicate to me a problem with the 'Book and not the
battery. Also, I just recently learned that the previous owner quit
using the WS about a year ago when her batteries (two) more or less died
on her. Two batteries going belly up in short order...? Sounds like a
charging problem to me. The more I Google and read up on the subject
the more I begin to suspect a faulty Power Charge Inverter. Can anyone
tell me if they think I'm homing in on the problem and its probable fix?

Wallstreet charge probs

My new-to-me Series II Wallstreet 266 definitely has battery "issues" -
won't charge a new battery in either bay. Got it to see the battery in
both bays, briefly with lightning charge indicator, then nada...back to
red X through the icon on restart, etc. PMU reset ineffective.

I'm thinking probably needs new PMU, but that's just a guess. Anybody
here had (and fixed) similar problems with their G3 'Book?
