An Apple branded dock would be nice, but then also that would mess up the clean
white surface of the bottom of my ibook.

Yes! I'm glad you mentioned that as it was an important factor for me
as well. Given that a laptop doesn't have any "expansion bays" I like
having a PCMCIA slot as a little bit of "future proofing".
Am I not the only one that wishes that Apple would put some sort of
docking connector on the bottom of their powerbooks? I know some 3rd
parties make docking connectors that attach to the side of the
powerbook, but something that the powerbook sat down in or on would
sure be nice

My current laptop was made before Firewire or Wireless Ethernet was well
known, but because it has the PCMCIA slots, I was able to get a WIFI card
and a FW card and add it to my computer.

You never know what next big thing is just around the corner and will
require a port that you might not have on your machine. PCMCIA gives you
a bit of upgrade power.

Good thing, too, otherwise I would have had no way to use my iPod for the
last year ;-)

They are both pretty close on features. Remember that the PowerBook is
going to come with an LCD that has slightly higher resolution (1024 x
768 on the iBook, and 1280x854 on the PowerBook). After spending some
time looking at the screens on both at a local store, I found the
PowerBook screen to be a little bit better looking. The iBook
officially only supports video mirroring, while the PowerBook can use
an external monitor as additional desktop space. Over a 5 year span, I
think that I would choose the Powerbook, if for nothing other than the
slightly faster processor and the better video card. Generally you want
to buy as much as you can afford to, especially if you are considering
purchasing a laptop.

FWIW, I tend to amortize the price difference over the life of the
machine. This is especially true with laptops as they can't be upgraded
easily (or at all in some aspects).

Assume you can get 5 years out of the machine
$500 / 5 years / 12 months = $8/month for the extra. Or about $0.30/day.
In the end, I decided that it was worth it to me in the long run to get
the extra performance of a Powerbook.

I think you're the only one who can answer the "is it worth it" question.
I would believe that the overall speed of the Powerbook would be better
for your tasks in the long run, but I can't say for sure.

Re: advice on laptop purchase

2004-04-25 Thread AKR
Hi Kate,
I would definitely go with the Powerbook if I was you. I was
contemplating almost the exact same options a few months ago but in the
end, the Powerbook won out and I have never regretted buying it since.
I got a 15" Al PB with the backlit keyboard, 80 Gig hard drive and
Superdrive. I did not add any RAM, although I may down the road. I
think you would appreciate the extra processor drive for iMovie and
iDVD, although it is not absolutely essential.

The DVD burner has been a great asset. Not only can I assist a local
film production company with their film clips but I can also burn back
up data DVD's, create DVD's for friends, and watch movies. For iMovie
and iDVD it is great. I also have Final Cut Express.

The iBook is a great value but I have to say that I think you will
find the Powerbook a much better investment over the long run.

Good luck with your decision,
Amber

Re: advice on laptop purchase

2004-04-25 Thread B Gardner
You pay for quality--and speed!
I have a 15" and am quite happy. I researched both the iBook and the
PowerBook. They are both real nice and fast but you will wish you had
gotten the PowerBook later. If you can afford the PB over the iBook
then definitely go with it. I did not have the money to get a 80 GB
drive, superdrive or backlight keyboard. I wish I had. I did get more
RAM (512) and I also had AP Extreme installed. One other suggestion:
get AppleCare for the product you buy. It is definitely worth it even
though it is a sizable bite.

All the best. And what are you doing with the Pismo?
Best Regards,
Byron
