FireWire may be 400Mbps... but your drive won't deliver data anywhere near that fast, and the ata-firewire bridge in the iLink case will slow it down further. side note... even if you have a machine (such as your iBook) that has software decoding ... calling it software decoding is deceptive; iirc, it's actually software decrypting of the CSS, the MPEG decoding still happens on the graphics card. if you take a brand new G4 tower and replace the graphics card with a non-MPEG-decoding card, suddenly DVD playback won't work. in hardware schemes, both decrypting and decoding are handled by hardware. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... So I guess I need to look for an internal drive. Question though... if my ibook500 didnt come stock with a dvd drive is there still a good chance that it still has the decoder on the graphics card? and all I need to do is get a dvd-rom for it.? on 11/20/02 10:41 AM, Jeremy Derr at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: generically speaking, external DVD drives don't tend to work (well, if at all) with DVD-Video. the DVD decoder (part of the graphics card) is mated to specific DVD drives, as well. throughput from the drive doesn't tend to meet playback requirements.
