What about cache? Could it be off for some reason in the 500 mhz? Have
you verified the disks status with a tool like Disk Warrior and/or
Norton? Maybe a problem with the drive in the 500 mhz 'book causes a
slowdown. Free space? Fragmented drive? How would you troubleshoot stalls
normally?
I suppose the more you list the differences and verfiy that similarities
really haven't been compromised between these two 'books, the more likely
it is that you'll find some candidates for what could be causing this.

Re: iMovie stalling

2003-12-20 Thread Clyde Kahrl
I don't think iMovie would stall because of your disk on any pismo.
That's just not going to be a problem.Of course it would hurt to
run DiskWarrior.

If you are doing it in OS9 you obviously have to pay attention to
your settings, turn off VM, turn off the network and appletalk, turn
off all non-essential extensions.

If you are having problems in OSX, then you, probably don't have
enough RAM. also, check out your little cpu monitor thingy to see is
something else is occupying your computer.

Since the two drives are identical, if you have the time and skill set, I
would suggest that you swap the two drives between the two systems to see if
the problem follows the drive or remains with the machine.

Good luck,

both the same HD, both in a Pismo, one a 400Mhz and one a 500Mhz and the

Re: iMovie stalling

2003-12-18 Thread Eric Morrison
Howdy:

Different drives of the same rpm definitely have different
characteristics and some work better under certain circumstances than
others. They have different cache sizes and the electronics make each
brand and model drive different. However, not all is as it seems. I
know that there were some either Toshiba or Fujitsu drives that were
the same speed as the Hitachi/IBM drives yet had an 8MB cache versus
the 2 or 4MB cache in the Hitachi/IBM drive... yet on xlr8yourmac the
Hitachi/IBM drive consistently outperformed the other drive (not sure
now what the other drive brand was). I have had good luck and
performance (quiet, fast, reliable, cost effective) out of IBM drives
so I have stuck with them. I'd recommend checking out xlr8yourmac.com
for reviews and benchmarks so you can make an informed decision. There
may be other relevant resources, this is one I've used that I trust.

A quick question about iMovie and a Pismo!

Why would my 500Mhz Pismo not be able to process video from my Sony digital
cam corder without stalling, but my 400Mhz Pismo processes it just fine? It
seems to work just the same in both 10 and 9.2 using iMovie 2. Both HD's are
4200rpm drives.
