new to this list
Hello. While I am not new to LEM lists, I'm new to this one. I currently use an iMac DV 400. I plan to buy a powerbook soon. I'm going to wait until after the WWDC to see if anything new is announced, then I will order it. I think I want to get the 15 powerbook with superdrive. It will be my main computer. I have used laptops before, and do not like the keyboards. Will a wireless keyboard and mouse work well with a powerbook, or should I plan to line in? Will wireless need any additional stuff to work, such as cards or drivers? Thanks, Claire -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... There are some bluetooth keyboards and mice that will work wirelessly and without hassle. But you do pay a higher price that a wired option. Luis --- Claire Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: gt; Hello. I doubt we'll see any PowerBook announcements since the PowerBook line was just revved. I'm expecting a new iMac and hoping against hope for another lowcost solution besides the mammoth eMac. Have you used the 15 keyboard? With one notable difference, I don't notice much of a difference between the PowerBook keyboards and desktop keyboards. That single difference is the Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard which I now use at home and work. But yes, you can indeed use wired or wireless keyboards/mouses with a PowerBook. Since the newer PowerBooks have bluetooth built in there are no cards or drivers -- unless your third party mouse/keyboard require drivers for extra functionality. For example, my four button mouse uses driver software to control the extra buttons. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: new to this list
Hello Claire, I think you will really enjoy the 15 PB with Superdrive. I bought my new Al 15 PB at Christmas (with Superdrive) and overall, have been very happy with it. The superdrive is great - especially for burning family DVD's and back ups. Way better than burning a stack of CD's when you need to back up your HD ! new PowerMac G5 list
Hello fellow Macintosh enthusiasts! Sorry for cross-posting this to the Apple mailinglists I subscribe to, but I thought some of you might be interested: I noticed a lack of conventional mailing lists about PowerMac G5 computers, so I made one available. Information about how to subscribe is in the footer. Sorry, there's no web interface for that as of now. The PowerMac G5 list's language will be English, though I have it hosted in Germany. It is a closed list (posting only allowed to subscribed members) and it is unmoderated (your posts go to the list right away), please consider netiquette rules. I very much look forward to contributions from all with questions and solutions regarding Apple's PowerMac G5 computers! -- Christoph Hammann PowerMac G5 mailinglist administrator To subscribe, send subscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the body of the message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, send unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the body of the message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] from the email account you subscribed under. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New to the list and OSX
Hello all. After six years on the dark side, I went out yesterday and bought myself a new PowerBook. I was a long-time PowerBook user before, having started on a 145B back in 1993, replaced by a 5300c in 1995, before I defected to Windows in 1998. My defection was not related to the software, but rather to Apple's then unwillingness to sell me a new laptop with an active matrix screen for $2000 or less. At that time, they had the cacheless, passive matrix Wallstreet at $1999, and the cheapest active matrix model at $2799. Six years later and I've replaced my IBM ThinkPad X21 with a 1GHz 12 PowerBook. Not sure yet about how Panther compares to XP, as I'm still learning my way around, but so far I'm impressed. The interface is attractive and the hardware is simply gorgeous. Anyway, I'll post more once I'm up to speed. Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New to the list and have some questions..anyone?
Josh: If you are new to the list check out the archive--these are standard topics. Here goes: Hello to everyone, I just bought a Lombard..333mhz, 192 megs of ram, 4 gig and was just wondering what you guys have as far as your OS on your Lombards.. I have a 333 Lombard with 192megs and it runs OSX OK--if your expectations are not unreasonable. Once you get your new drive make three disk partitions and keep OS9 on one partition and OSX on the other. You may want to stay on OS9. Also, I'm thinking about upgrading the HD, it would appear for not much more I could get a Newer Firewire card, and a firewire 7200rpm HD for just a little bit more than a regular 2.5 5400rpm IDE hard drive.. Others have discussed this topic--check the archives.I bought an drive from OWC and then put the old drive in a $60 firewire box that is powered through the cable. It is a wonderful thing for my other computers--but I can't use the firewire on the Lombard without a firewire card--which I also need for my ipod--but remember only the really, really expensive firewire card ( can't remember the name) allows you to connect an external power supply to the card to power the cable on a portable firewire drive--including the cost of the external power supply I think it costs over $100 (all firewire cardbus cards are not equal). IN other words, without a plug in power supply you cannot power firewire through the cardbus; you must have a self-powered external drive--or a self powered cardbus--you cannot drive your drive from the lombard battery. Now think of thisyou can't take that big drive with you and 4 Gigs is hardly enough disk space these days for much of anything. Since your new drive would be critical for giving your machine a speed boost, and so you would want it to be the boot up drive-- you really want the new internal drive for speed and portability. I can promise you, the new drive will really speed up the machine. There are other experts here that know more about processor swaps and dvd chips, but of course at some point, if you want a pismo, its cheaper to sell the Lombard and get a pismo. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New to the list and have some questions..anyone?
Hello to everyone, I just bought a Lombard..333mhz, 192 megs of ram, 4 gig hd, yadda yadda...and was just wondering what you guys have as far as your OS on your Lombards..Also, I'm thinking about upgrading the HD, first of all I didn't realize how expensive laptop hd's were compared to a typical 3.5in drive! And the more I got to looking, it would appear for not much more I could get a Newer Firewire card, and a firewire 7200rpm HD for just a little bit more than a regular 2.5 5400rpm IDE hard drive...just wondering if any of you have any experience going this route and your observations on the topic...Next item, I have heard you can swap the 400mhz cpu into the 333mhz logic board with no problem, then you lack the dvd decoding but gain the extra cpu power...anyone done this? I can either get the CPU for an easier swap or the entire 400mhz Logic board and the CPU, just trying to save myself a couple bucks...besides taking this guy apart is it difficult to make the swap? On the topic of Dvd, I can just grab the 400mhz dvd rom module, then the PC card decoder and be on my way correct? Or like I said earlier swap the entire 400mhz logic board in and be a fake 400mhz DVD capable lombard if you will? or am I dreaming?!...I thank you for taking your time to read my post and look foward to your responses either on list or off..
