Because the solution is to defeat the mechanism by which any Office
component can check the network for another copy running, which kind of mean
defeating a copy protection. That wouldn't be very smart to post in a public

reason why posting links to illegitimate copies of Apple Service Manuals is

I thought that the purpose was to ask folks to do a little homework
before they posted. I'm guessing that putting the error message into
Google would have resulted in an answer.

However, by taking what little information you gave from your post, I
trusted that you were being truthful that you had a site license, you
were using office x, and you received an error. That led me to put
these keywords into Google:

site:microsoft.com office x error site license
The very first hit was this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=312232product=ent2001
Reading that, I now assume that the error message you received was:
This installation of Microsoft Office X exceeds the number of
installations permitted by the license agreement

putting that into Google also resulted in the same first link to
Microsoft, even without putting around it or limiting to
site:microsoft.com

which would have given you an answer much more quickly than posting
here.

Brilliant. Solution to opening (and recovering) Excel workbook data was
opening the workbook from within the icExcel demo application. All data
recovered. One minor glitch: formatting was lost, but no harm done. I
will buy icExcel.

I must assume that the particular workbook was corrupted seen as all
other Excel documents are working just fine.

Thank you all for your assistance and, in particular, Mary Russell.

Hope I can be of use to any of you in the future.

Re: Office X: Opening Excel

2004-02-09 Thread Kris McGrath
It was someone else's file. I support a 'bilingual' environment 60%/40% PC
to Mac. Sometimes the best solutions I come up involve a mac smiling
through a window!

It is worth noting thought that unlike Alain, my case involved a flat
data-file. There was no importing involved. I never did figure out what
caused the problem in the first place.

As to your question about cross platform compatibility, I can't say that I
have noticed any. There may be some known issue, but I have never
encountered it. I manage my PC's from a WinXP box running Office XP, but do
much of my other work on an OSX Ti-Book with Office V.x. More often then
not, things work really well.

(For those in shock, yes I did use M$ and 'work really well' in the same
thought)

I admit up-front- this isn't the kind of advice I normally give.

Try opening the file on a PC with MS Office. I had this happen for someone
with an iMac DV, OS 9.1, Office 2001. I tried on a couple of different macs
and didn't get anywhere. When I tried on my PC, it showed the Conversion
in progress message and then opened. Several formatted text cells were
lost, but most of the data was there.

This reminded me - wasn't there a thread about problems with
cross-platform Word docs? Something involving Office for WinXP? Forget the
details, but that might be the problem.

Was this your own file or someone else's?

Re: Office X: Opening Excel

2004-02-08 Thread Frank P. Eigler
What happens in these situations? Nothing? A warning/dialog box?

My first thought is to check/repair permissions.
Another would be to Get Info on the file, go to Open With, navigate to
Excel, then verify to Always Open With
Hmm - what size is the file? Do you know for a fact it's a legitimate
Excel file?

A very round about method, but perhaps worth a shot: Open the file in
AppleWorks. It should translate okay. Try saving as an Excel sheet, or
just Copy Paste over. Note that if this workbook contains more than one
worksheet you may have problems as AppleWorks doesn't handle multiple
sheets (IIRC)

 1) clicking on the workbook icon as usual, as I have done with that

 2) opening the workbook from within the Excel application.
 3) clicking on an alias of the workbook
 4) clicking on a copy of the workbook.
 5) restarting the Mac several times

I unfortunately have no recent backup of the workbook. All other files,

Re: Office X: Opening Excel

2004-02-08 Thread CONGELADORA MORELIA
Thanks for the possible solutions offered, which I have tried, as
follows:

1)Permissions: The file is mine, permissions seem to be OK (I'm the
owner/ only user, registered as Administrator). No password protection,
so passwords not an issue. File not locked.

2)Warning/dialogue boxes: I get the warning concerning macros, offering
to enable or disable them. Whichever I choose (enable or disable) seems
to make no difference. Dialogue box disappears once checked and nothing
happens.

3)Opening on a PC: I have tried opening the file on a PC as suggested,
but this doesn't work either ( I tried on two PCs)

4) File size: 290Kb (small but unfortunately containing important data).

Despite lack of success, I'm still hoping, and I'm still all ears to
any advice.

TIA

Alain.

PS: I've searched the MS Office Mac support site and knowledge base, to
no avail

That's very strange. The file is maybe corrupted somehow? You could maybe
try to force open it in a text editor to see if you can recover some data.
There might be a lot of control characters but you might be able to see your
data. If you have BBEdit, I would try this one first. If not, you could
always try TextEdit that comes with OS X. Change or add a file extension on
your file to 'txt'. But make sure you're working on a copy of the file. BTW,
have you tried duplicating the file in the Finder and tried to open the
copy?

Re: Office X: Opening Excel

2004-02-08 Thread Ned1
Another possible solution is to use MacLink Plus Deluxe to access the file. You can
set the software up to translate the file from one version to another. It can also be
used to identify the existing file's author and version. Finally, it can be used to
open the file in a fashion similar to that suggested by someone earlier in the thread
(Textedit).

Have you tried icexcel.? There is a free trial download. I bought it, and it has always

tell you what the problem is. Once you open it, save to another format.
Go to www.icexcel.com Hope this helps.
