I travel frequently with my PowerBook and people asks
me Hey, you should remove OS 8.6 because it's a dead
OS.
Then, I must explain the DVD issue.

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-19 Thread Alejandro
On my Lombard, OS 8.6 works better than 9.0.4, 9.1.1,
9.1.2, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2
I'm very happy with 8.6 and the FREE Panther (Tiger
will be soon installed from the same source).
I made some changes on 8.6 with ResEdit and it looks a
little different (replaced the Keyboard flags, the
StartUp Screen the DVD icon, etc).
I don't need 9.2, because it eats more space and adds
nothing (I replaced the 6GB HD for a 60GB one). I
prefer to burn discs with Toast (Multi session, CD-RW
support and a few things that 9.2 don't have).
That's why I keep OS 8.6 and for Classic, ResEdit can
replace the version number of the System so OS X can
use 8.6 as Classic without problems and FASTER.
Really Thanks for your advice.

I think that Apple don't care too much about their
customers.
I have a Lombard PowerBook and I can't play DVDs on OS
X because DVD Player app don't support hardware
decoders.
Apple suggest to boot on OS 9 (or OS 8.6) for DVD
Playback.
As I believe that is NOT a solution, I made the
following: I installed Jaguar and Panther from copies.
I'm not going to spend another cent on Apple's
Incomplete Software (I believe X is).
I will not pay again for Apple Software until this
issue gets fixed.

That will be a buy. Sorry. Apple will usually

 it's newest

 most likely planned
was for Steve to introduce the new iMac G5 line. .
 which everyone knows
Apple dropped the ball on. Of course, we Mac users

An exaggeration IMHO.

10.3 is a BIG improvement over 10.2.
I agree. But 10.2 is totally usable.

I really feel that previous owners of Mac OS X should receive a discount

YES, because Apple says that OS X supports the
PowerBook G3.
They lie because they are interested on selling only.
If they have the right to lie, I have the rigth to
install Apple Software for free.
Also, I have a similar problem with my Sony Spressa
Plus Burner (USB Plus supported on OS 9 ONLY, thanks
to Apple).
The DVD Drive is an APPLE Drive and it came with the
PowerBook. Wallstreet users have the same problem.
Apple should support it and fix that issue.
I will keep installing Apple Software from Copies and
Apple will loose some money because of that.

I have two G3s at home.
From Mac OS 8.1 to Mac OS 10.1 they have Original

From Jaguar, they have copies installed.
Also, I have a few friends wich are installing copies

Myabe I'm wrong, but Apple didn't answered me so maybe

I also sent a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (a year ago)

Apple will force me to keep OS 9 and they will give

Anyway, I prefer to install Original Software.

I will install Tiger for free too. If I find a DVD

I watched the recording of Jobs in San Francisco. As far as I'm
concerned, Tiger wasn't originally planned to even be mentioned until
late next year. What was most likely planned was for Steve to
introduce the new iMac G5 line. . which everyone knows Apple dropped
the ball on.
The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. So far Tiger does
not look that exciting (YMMV), and that might be understandable if they
had to rush it out of the door.

Yes, you are wrong!!! You are in violation of the terms of the license and
so are your friends who make illegal copies for you. To install the OS, you
agreed to the terms of the license.

Here I quote parts of the hard copy Single Use License that came with
Panther.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE, DO NOT USE THE
SOFTWARE.

2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.

A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple
Software on a single Apple-labled computer at a time. This License does not
allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and
you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could
be used by multiple computers at the same time. You may make one copy of
the Apple Software (excluding the Boot ROM code) in machine-readable form
for backup purposes only; provided that the backup copy must include all
copyright or other proprietary notices contained on the original.

3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, lend, redistribute or sublicense the
Apple Software. You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all
of your license rights to the Apple Software provided that Here
summarizing: you transfer all of it, you do not retain any copies, and the
recipient agrees to the license terms.

You can make yourself legal on all your machines if you buy the Family Pack
which provides a license for up to five Macs in a home.

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-17 Thread Hal
It's called residual revenue.
Apple, like any company that is only going to sell you a major product
every few years, needs to insure that they can make money on a regular
basis. It's the same reason Microsoft updates Office every 2 years and
makes just enough changes that if one person in your office gets the
new version, everyone has to upgrade...

Seriously though, I've been impressed enough with the last 2 versions
to pay retail for them... 10.2 and 10.3 have been pretty major
upgrades. I hope 10.4 is as good.

Just my $0.02.

If they stuck to the original numbering scheme, I guess Jaguar would be
10.5, Panther 11.0, and Tiger 11.5. I believe this more accurately
reflect the differences between systems. However, this would introduce
the problem with the Mac OS X moniker. (I still don't know where
Apple will go with this one.)

Coincidentally, for a short while Apple's Public Relations website had
a picture of a Panther CD with a Mac OS X Version 11 label. This was
quickly changed to one with Mac OS X Version 10.3.

That will be a buy. Sorry. Apple will usually allow a free upgrade from
one major version to another if you buy the computer a few months before the
release of the new version. But Tiger is not hitting the streets until
maybe next summer.

I had to comment on this one. . .this reminded me of the one thing
Apple has done over the years that truly is a slap to loyal Mac users.
Anyone look in their box for X? Or 9 for that matter? See those
upgrade coupons? Wonder what they are for? Basically nothing. .
.it's things like this that make me shrug whenever Steve Jobs announces
a new version of Mac OS, because I know that it's gonna take a small
chunk out of my wallet. I strongly feel that Apple should have just
waited at least until the new Windose OS comes out. . .ya' know, the
one that's going to put PC users what we Mac users went through.
Jumping from 9 to X wasn't easy. I didn't do it until the last release
of Jaguar was introduced to the market. I my opinion, Apple should sit
back on the software side, and focus on it's users, it's newest
hardware ( the new cinema displays are enough of a distraction alone),
and try to make sure everyone is happy with Jaguar and Panther BEFORE
they even talk about Tiger. I watched the recording of Jobs in San
Francisco. As far as I'm concerned, Tiger wasn't originally planned to
even be mentioned until late next year. What was most likely planned
was for Steve to introduce the new iMac G5 line. . which everyone knows
Apple dropped the ball on. Of course, we Mac users know it wasn't
Apple, but IBM for not being able to develop a better cooling system to
work in the tight quarters within an iMac. But now I'm getting into a
tangent aren't I? :)

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-17 Thread Adam Thayer
This is precisely why, actually. Steve Jobs said that MacOS X would
'last us' through the decade at least, which is why it has been 10.x.x
for 5 years now. Another way to look at it is this:

MacOS x.y.z
x - Major Version Number - Represents a whole new core for the OS.
y - Minor Version Number - Represents new features that are added to
the OS.
z - Patch Version Number - Represents tuning and other enhancements
that don't add features.

Granted this only works for versions since 10.0.0, but once you get
used to it, it makes as much sense as Apple's system before.

I don't think Apple has made any official statements on the cost of
Tiger but it is a safe bet that the only people who get it for free are
those who buy a new Mac just before Tiger is released. The past two
upgrades have been $129 and Tiger's 150 new features will probably cost
us another $129-$150.
