What about LED backlighting vs. fluorescent? Fluorescent can and will  
change with time and eventually burn out. LED should stay constant and  
last almost forever. I saw a recent review that said something like  
20% of all laptop LCD will be LED backlit this year, and they  
anticipate that will go to over 80% in the next two years, and  
fluorescent will be extinct soon after. It's another consideration.

Here's a quote from the article mentioned above:

"S-IPS panels are generally considered the best all around panel type,
but they are more expensive and very few are made. High end,
expensive." (These include Apple Cinema Displays).

"TN panels are very cheap and have the fastest response times, but
suffer from inferior color reproduction, contrast ratios and viewing
angles. Low end, inexpensive." (The Samsung models we've been
discussing are this type).

"S-PVA/MVA panels offer better color reproduction and viewing angles
than TN panels, have slightly worse response times than TN or S-IPS,
offer the best contrast ratios, may suffer from color shifting or
input lag and have higher availability than S-IPS panels. Mid range,
fair price."

Ah well, if the above is true, then for high quality photo and video
editing, a second-hand Apple Cinema Display might be the best choice
after all, if you can get a good one. There's the rub. Buying used on
eBay has its risks. But I can't afford to lay down $900 for a new 22-
inch Apple LCD.

If color accuracy is *that* important to you, and price is an issue, look on
eBay for Eizo LCDs. Eizo makes displays for professional users, like medical
imaging and such. They manufacture their LCDs with color accuracy and
precision being the premiums.

Still researching big monitors. I'll be doing Photoshop and Final Cut
work, and it appears that not everybody is happy with the T-series
Samsungs for such purposes. It appears that the T stands for twisted
nematic (TN) LCD, and these are considered by many to be lower quality
and for non-critical color work such as gaming, since they are
impossible to calibrate and the colors are said to shift with slight
changes in viewing angle.

Mind you, this is just what I'm reading, I don't have any personal
experience with any other LCD display than my old Apple Cinema
Display. Whether or not these reported color problems would be
noticeable to me, I don't know yet.

But reviews like this one on Amazon on the T-series Samsungs are a
little worrisome for somebody wanting to to precision Photoshop and
Final Cut work: .

I think I need to get out and really look at some of these Samsungs,
or bring one home and try it out. Many Mac users appear to be really
happy with them.

A friend of mine does the mirror thing all the time with both his PB 
and his iMac.  The external monitor is much sharper than the built-in 
display, and has MUCH better color reproduction.  He's able to use it 
at its highest resolution, and still read fine print.  He cannot do 
that with the built-in screens.  They're just too soft and fuzzy for 
his eyes.

Sorry.  I don't buy it.  I know how Verizon's network works.  They DO 
NOT reduce customer caps because they have more than one computer. 
EVER.  There are a myriad of reasons for poor throughput, all of 
which have specific solutions.  It just takes some effort to diagnose 
it.

Did you get any sort of ticket number from Verizon when you called? 
If you can provide, I can forward it to a local manager who can have 
that person "corrected" then initiate whatever investigation toward 
your difficulty is necessary.

My monitor gives good results when viewing head on or up to 40° from 
either side. OTOH, viewing gets much more critical when looking down, 
(such as standing up), which is a typical property of backlit screens.

In the future, LED monitors promise to end that but their cost is 
prohibitive at this time...

There should be no change of aspect ratio of items on ths screen.

And yes, all new displays are 16:9 which very closely equals the "185" 
format of theatrical release motion pictures.

If you're seeing things "stretched," something is wrong with settings.

Like I said, my Samsung played right out of the box at 1680x1050. Make 
sure that your settings reflect the 16:9 format.

Thanks for the info Cliff. Several big Dells are available too, but
I'll try Samsung first, since the consensus seems to be that they are
excellent monitors. I did read some complaints that the viewing angles
of the Samsungs are pretty narrow, though, meaning (I guess) that you
need to look at them straight-on, and not slightly to one side, or the
image is degraded, although if you sit right in front of your monitor
I don't see why that should be a big problem.

Video editing (Final Cut) may require a fast response time to avoid
"ghosting" of moving images, I understand, so if it's a toss-up
between two monitors, the fastest response time may break the tie. And
of course Photoshop work on digital photos and things requires good
accurate color.

So many variables. . .

No nitpicking taken, Doug. Yes, I think you're right: a very artistic
"A".
I just played around with the control and found how to modify the
horizontal width etc.
But cannot get images down to a normal view.
So I mention this because it may be "asking" for a video card other
than the iBook offers
and this could be a factor (or certainly will be in my future
purchases) in deciding on a monitor.

We just purchased a "NOC"  (I guess that's an "N")  2219S-1  from
Circuit City.
It measure 12" h x 19" w  and diagonal 23". My wife likes it as it's a
big improvement over here iBook screen.

But those proportions seem like they are made for HD TV. The images
are elongated and I can't figure how to set it for correction.

My 17" Dell (10.5 x 13) is more normal and I like it a lot.

Anyway, comments on this proportion matter might be enlightening and
it's something to consider.

My Samsung SyncMaster 225 cost about $375 over two years ago from Newegg.

The successors which are better cost at least $100 less these days.

Besides, if you ever put a Viewsonic next to a Samsung, there's no 
comparison.

Doesn't Samsung still make most of Apple's monitors?  Didn't Apple sink 
$100 million into Samsung awhile back?

Just my half cents worth...

I bought a Samsung 22" a little over two years ago and have been very 
satisfied. It came with all the cables/connectors for most applications. 
  Best of all, it was plug and play period.

And this was for an ancient Gigabit G4 that I bought new in early 2001.

No reason to pay high Apple prices.

Yes, a router may be the route (pun intended) to go with moving
information between Macs, but I know nothing about routers, yet. As
far as DSL, that's how I'm connected to the Internet, I know that.
I'll have to look into routers, then, and thanks for the suggestion.
Costco has this Dell 22" LCD for $300  that
I'll also check into, since your partner likes his. BTW I have an art
studio too, at , and YouTube art videos
such as .

I have all my Macs connected via a Westell 327W router and DSL

One has all my SCSI externals as well as my USB 2 scanner. Sounds  
similar ... along with a Compaq Presario CRT.

Thanks Robert! I'll check that site out. He's got information there
about monitor brands I never even heard of, like DoubleSight, Hazro,
and LG. He says that the best picture quality comes from "LCDs
manufactured with an IPS based panel." Now I have to learn what IPS
is. . .

Thanks for the recommendation Alex. Costco has this Samsung  for $229 and this one 
for $259. They appear nearly identical. Which one is most like the one
you've had good experience with? Then there's this even bigger 25.5"
Samsung  for $479, 2 inches larger than the
others (for about $100 per additional inch!). Any knowledge of that
one?

Good grief, look at all the big monitors available at just this one
store, Costco: , and that's just one page
of several! Surely there's something among all these that is
comparable in visual quality to an Apple Cinema Display?

Anyway, thanks again for the advice. I'll look first at the Samsungs,
then. The advantage with a place like Costco is, if you buy one and
then decide it isn't up to snuff, you can take it back.

Upgrading a 1GHz MDD

Hello all

Is there a CPU upgrade route that's not too expensive?

Or maybe a graphics upgrade?

I've upped the RAM to 1.5GB and I have extra USB cards, an Airport  
card as well as filling the HDD bays and installing a DVD writer

Currently running latest Leopard

Well, as much as I'd like to move everything into the "new" G5 and set
the G4 out to pasture, I'm dragging along so much old hardware baggage
from the past, like that ADC Cinema Display, that the G4 will have to
go into a sort of active retirement to continue running some of it.
The G5 just can't take it all on. For example, I was naive enough to
think that I could just buy a PCIx SCSI card for the G5 and keep
running my high-end Minolta Dimage film scanner with it (scans both
medium format and 35mm), but no such luck. SCSI has apparently been
practically discarded from desktop computing. I take a look at OWC and
find out that SCSI cards for G5s are in the $400 range, rare and
exotic beasts with prices to match.

So, instead of being discarded, the old Quicksilver will probably have
to be set off in a corner somewhere hooked up to this 24" Cinema
Display and running the Minolta film scanner, plus an old Relysis SCSI
flatbed scanner with a glass bed big enough to scan maps and things,
and who knows what else around here that the G5 can't run. The scans
from the G4 will have to be brought over to the G5 in a flash drive or
something. (Sigh.) Just can't afford to upgrade everything all at
once.

Still looking for an affordable non-Apple 22-24" LCD monitor for the
G5 that is comparable in visual quality to a Cinema Display. If no
such thing exists, I'll just have to buy that $100 Apple adapter to
make the old ADC Cinema Display work with the G5. Then the G4 will get
one of the old CRT monitors still sitting around here to use with the
scanners etc.

Upgrading computers is such a hassle. . .

I prefer an Kurtzmann acoustic piano KB over my weighted-hammer  
action yamaha motif es8 KB, partly, because its a percussion  
instrument ... actual hammers and strings and all.

Maybe a drum set would satisfy part of the frustration ... save the  
USB KBs for something more word-like and poetic ... I do agree,  
though, they are a bit flimsy feeling ...

Ditto: If you did that to me, I wouldn't work for you either.

Rick, I feel your pain and your frustration. I quit using Apple 
keyboards when they went USB. The feel wasn't right for typing, not 
like the basic ADB keyboard on my P475. I bought a Macally USB to 
replace the Apple one that came with the iMac 350. When I got the 
iMac 500 and was using both computers, I got used to 
unplugging/plugging because even their updated KB felt like crap. 
When I bought the G5 used, it came with a white keyboard that just 
doesn't work for me -- the key action is crap compared to the 
Macally. So whenever I need to work on any of the three, the Macally 
comes with me. I take the board apart several times a year to wash it 
down with a toothbrush. Keeps on tickin' Take a lickin' -- until this 
latest 10.5 Security Update when the keys started repeating and not 
stopping. I end up crawling under the desk to unplug it. I thought it 
might be age, dirt, contacts -- cleaned and checked. Still it 
sporadically repeats the number keys. It's probably time for a new 
keyboard, because I won't be using any of the 3 USBs I have sitting 
on shelves in case I sell or give away the older computers.

Out of curiosity, did you start out typing on a typewriter? I started 
with manuals, advanced to electric and believe the reason I like the 
ADBs and the Macally is because their key action feels more natural 
to me.

iTunes library / database suggestion?

I went looking for a cataloguing app for my audio files that would 
create a simple database that would list Artist - Album - Track - 
Song (possibly Year - Bitrate - Notes) and various interviews and 
radio shows with information to be determined, without the need to 
play the files within the database. I ended up back at iTunes, 
somewhat reluctantly. I don't want one big Library that includes 
every sound file so I'm creating multiple Libraries. However, some of 
my existing Libraries currently has Podcasts in them and I would like 
to move all the Podcasts to the same Library without needing to 
download the files again for that new Library to see the actual 
files. When I physically move the various folders into the new 
"Podcast" Library, the new Library can't see the files, and 
resubscribing to the feeds still isn't seeing the existing podcasts. 
iTunes still wants me to download the files again. Is there a way 
around this?

Is there a database app that would take the files as named 
(Artist-Year-Album-Track-Song) and allow me to choose how to look at 
what's in the database, ie if I wanted to know how many times "I left 
my heart in San Antonio" appears in the database, and from there 
which Artists and on which Albums? I don't need the ability to play a 
file from within the database itself.

I currently use DiskTracker to catalogue some disks but it doesn't 
allow for re-ordering of individual items within a disc.

My first Apple USB keyboard, a clear, extended Pro model, came from a  
dumpster at a nearby university. From the stickiness of the keys it  
seemed obvious that a sugary soda was spilled or perhaps purposefully  
poured into the keyboard? I found disassembly instructions with photos  
on the web, and I spent four hours disassembling the entire keyboard.  
It was difficult, I think there were at least 40 screws, and all the  
separate keys, etc. The contacts are gold, and there are those  
standard urethane rubber sheets that make the electronic connection  
beneath the keys. Two or three of the contacts had corrosion on the  
gold. I had no conductive trace paint to repair it. I just cleaned it  
really good, and hoped what was remaining of the gold would be enough.  
That was about 5 years ago. I use the keyboard every day without any  
issues at all. I was expecting it to fail at any moment, and so far,  
not a single problem. I'm typing on it now.

I'd suggest not man-handling your keyboards so much. I've never banged  
on mine, or done anything harsh to it. If it started auto-repeating  
2's or whatever, I'd get another keyboard to use. Going through six  
keyboards in one year surely must place you about six standard  
deviations from the mean.

I will agree that the ADB keyboards are bombproof and probably better.  
A quick search of eBay for "ADB USB adapter" under "Completed Items"  
shows that the cheapest one sold for $16.76 shipped, five sold for  
under $20 shipped, and seven more for under $30 shipped. Several in  
the $25 range shipped were "Buy It Now" for new items. Place a search  
with email notification and you'll know instantly when another becomes  
available. If you adore the ADB keyboard, buy an adapter. With a dozen  
selling for less than $30 in the past month, it shouldn't take you  
long to snag one cheaply enough.

I have never had a problem with MAc keyboards and always found them to be 
of excellent build quality.

I prefer the black ones that came with the iMac G3 (I have a DV model) over 
the white ones that came with the G4 range (like my eMac G4).

The ones that come with the early Intel machines are pretty good.

All of great build quality, although the black ones are much better and I 
am using one right now as I like it so much.

There laptop keyboards of pretty top notch too. I have always found the 
PowerBook (pre-Aluminium) and iBooks (pre-G3) to be of excellent standard.

Why is it that Mac stopped making decent keyboards and now sell utter  
crap?  I just got done taking a hammer to yet another one of these  
worthless usb abortions Mac switched to.  In the last year I have  
gone through at least 6.  They just quit working.  I worked with that  
one for some time.  It started typing two's all by itself so I  
flipped it upside down and beat on it to make that stop.  Then it  
starts in on 0's.  Then the caps lock key quits and half the letters  
go.  I unplug it, plug it back in.  Reboot the whole machine.  Even  
turning it upside down and pounding on the damn thing only does so  
much.  Why did they ever stop making those nice ADB keyboards?  Or a  
much better question would be  why did the cheap bastards do away  
with the ADB port so they could save a buck a unit?  I would have  
thought Apple would be above such Intel-like behavior.  Intel hacked  
the cache in a P3 to save a buck and called it a Celeron.  Winmodem  
riser cards.  The list goes on.  Everytime I sit in front of a Mac  
anymore and have to look at one of those USB keyboards it just pisses  
me off.  Is there some way I can cheaply get a trusty old extended  
keyboard to work on this miserable usb interface?  Most adapters I  
have seen cost 50 or more.  I am this close to taking a hammer to the  
whole thing.
