There's no such thing as a Netgear WRT54g, it's a Linksys. The Linksys
WRT54g started the whole DD-WRT/OpenWRT revolution of open source
Linux firmware for routers. Just because your ISP's router firmware
has bad range doesn't mean you can't do something about it. You should
look into whether or not your specific model and version of WRT54g can
run DD-WRT or OpenWRT firmware, and if it can, I believe you'll find
you can improve your router performance dramatically, which makes
certain models & versions of the WRT54g among the most sought after of
the 802.11g routers, and best selling too.

D-Link has a G offering with two USB2 ports, not sure if they make the
exact model anymore though. Also, what Netgear do you have? I have a
NetGear WPN824v2 G router with RangeMax and MIMO, and i love it. Goes

OK. System log looked at and saved. But that system log is from Safe boot.
So I thought I'd reboot, allowing normal boot until it hung, and then
restart in TDM so I could access log via my G4 lampshade. Did this and I
found references to my Wacom Bamboo tablet, which I've recently installed on
the G4! So I disconnected FW lead and rebooted the eMac. It got as far as
the desktop this time and I moved the mouse onto the Apple menu which
opened, and then froze with a spinning pinball.Turned off eMac, restarted in
TDM and then connected FW lead and went drilling for logs in
1.25eMac/users/myfolder/library/logs. This got me to disk utility log.
Clicking further got me to system log which I attempted to copy to the
clipboard for study in textedit - I got nearly to the bottom and then it
vanished. Before I try again am I looking in the right place?

Safe Mode is a restricted/limited environment. Many drivers are not
loaded. Many services are not running. It is meant as a
debug/repair type mode, not for regular use.

Running as you suggest is the equivalent of driving your car on the

1.25 eMac running in safe mode.

2010-03-03 Thread Dan Stobbs
I recently bought one of these with the failing caps problem.

described thusly

"... as spares and repairs because I dont have the time to reinstall Mac
OSX
boots up to statup then sits on mac loading screen may just need
reinstalling ."
[image:
Photobucket]this
was how it arrived (seller's photo).

basically for spares for my other eMacs and because I like a challenge,
and it *may just* have needed a re-install (another one I bought for spares
came without a System folder that had been trashed somehow so nice kernel
panic when I turned it on - an OSX install sorted that one although since it
is clogged with sawdust I need to strip and clean it before I dare use it
for anything!)

While I can wield a soldering iron I'm not intending to repair it but I've
been playing with it as a result of email conversations with an ebayer who
had one up for sale. She said that hers will surf in safe mode, so I dug
mine out with a view to trying this out.
When I turned it on I found that I was in the middle of re-installing OSX on
it when I got fed up some weeks ago.
I started it in Safe Mode and was able to complete the installation
satisfactorily, then started it in Target Disc Mode and moved a few files
across, including the combined update.
So now I have an eMac running 10.4.11, and in safe mode it seems quite
happy. Trying to boot it normally, it sometimes freezes at 'Starting OSX',
sometimes gets as far as a desktop, but then the mouse freezes - basically,
as expected, no functionality.
So a couple of questions.

I usually share my internet connection between my Macs using a firewire
cable (why - because it just works beautifully!)
In safe mode I do not seem to be able to invoke this functionality - system
prefs only shows ethernet as an option. Am I missing something obvious or
can I only do this in full bells and whistles mode?

Everything *seems* to work fine in Safe Mode - I've installed a couple of
small apps - Onyx, Neo Office, my printer - and they seem to work OK. (not
actually tried printing yet though!)
VLC 0.9.9a doesn't seem to output video and sound - having just checked
System Prefs, it shows no input or output devices found, so do I lose sound
and video options in safe mode?
The eMac seems stable enough in Safe Mode, no video artifacts, random
freezes, mouse hanging - what kind of voodoo is going on here - I would have
thought that dodgy caps would cause problems in safe mode as well?

Looking forward to the group's erudition on this1

Dan.

But... take your time, peruse the normal channels - your local

Bill,

Consumer Reports did an article on printers in its December '09 issue.

Two Brother models were tested and both got the check mark
recommendation and an "excellent" for quality text printing.

They were models HL-5370DW ($250) and HL-2170W ($150).
Both support ethernet and wifi.
The more expensive model is given a cheaper per copy cost presumably
because its toner cartridge is larger.

memtest-ing using the "Sandwich Method", IIRC, proves the middle stick
is a good one.

e.g. If 3 sticks "A B C" tests OK, you assume B is a good stick. since
memtest allegedly exercises the entire middle stick.

And so forth.

All mine now test good.

I'm sort of suspecting a weak PRAM battery.
and/or
Maybe dust in the slots, a need to re-seat the sticks.

I've become a big fan of Brother.

A Brother HL6050DN. (D==Duplexing; N==Network)  Built like tanks, run
forever and ever. An EXCELLENT workgroup printer.

Their only drawback is that repair parts seem quite hard to source. We
replaced one a year back was simply having problems with paper feed,
but I was unable to find a source for the take-up rollers in the back,
which were the probable issue.

HP's 2nnn and higher numbered printers are also good.

Brother makes the smaller, desktop-sized HL5050, dunno if it has a N
option too, but we have another one of those that's been giving yeoman
service for about 7 years now.

Brother, unlike HP doesn't change their printer lineup every 35 days,
when we replaced the Hl6050DN, it was the very same model as the one
we'd purchased 6 years prior. This is starting to catch up to HP,
we've had a few come through that were intractable lemons (beware the
old 4400 series B&W workgroup printers, and three of the four low-end
color laser printers we've gotten from them have died; logic board
issues, I guess, because they just flat stopped working.) so if you go
for an HP model, scour the web for problems with it before you buy.

It's sad because HP at one time made the best laser printers on the
planet.

Another thing with the Brothers, the toner is separate from the drum,
so feeding them is cheaper than most other printers.

Printer recommendation?

2010-03-03 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: It's looking like my beloved old Apple LaserWriter 12/640 PS
may be on its last legs...it's pulling several sheets at a time, and
therefore jamming, more and more often, and it seems to be getting
somewhat slower too, though I just ordered some more memory for it to
go from the stock 4MB to 16 MB (this before I had caught on to the
jamming issue). Plus the multi-purpose tray has never pulled anything
through; as soon as it starts to do so it stops with a loud clunk
sound, and displays a paper jam even though the paper never moves more
than about 1/16 of an inch and comes back out with no resistance at
all.

Because of the age of this thing (and the fact that I got it for free
[!] about seven years ago) I suspect it's not worth a service call,
and the fix-your-own-printer folks don't have anything to service it
myself that I can find...and the forums there make it sound like a
large pain in the hoo-hah to work on anyway.

So my question is, what do you folks recommend as a good-quality,
basic b/w, no need for bells & whistles, laser printer that won't
break the bank and will work well with either machine below? Yes, I
know you get what you pay for, but I just can't pay for very much,
unfortunately. This would be for basic home printing: no photos or
high-end graphics, almost no high-volume needs, nothing out of the
ordinary. The only two things I can think of that might be nice-to-
haves are a wireless connection and the ability to copy & scan too,
but even those are not necessities, let alone the ability to make
coffee or vacuum the car. *ahem*

If you have suggestions for reviving the 12/640 instead, I'm glad to
hear those too. As always, my thanks in advance!

Re: Start-up

2010-03-03 Thread gifutiger
Greetings

When your platform boots into open firmware, have you reset the open
firmware?
You can do the reset by entering

reset-nvram (enter)
set-defaults (enter)
reset-all (enter)

the reset-all will cause the platform to reboot.

Re: Disk Utility Hang

2010-03-03 Thread gifutiger
Greetings

Why don't you try memtest with just one memory module installed at a
time.
That way if they all pass you can then move them from one slot at a
time to the next slot and run memtest again.
Troubleshooting needs to be taken down to the least number of
components to be tested.

I'll second the above. While you COULD MAYBE do it, I wouldn't. I
tried at the request of someone a couple years back who wanted a better
resolution LCD in a ThinkPad - it didn't end well.

Now if it was a swap of a higher res LCD from a same model? That would
probably work - say a MBP - but nope, I wouldn't even try from a
different model.

There is someone on this list who replaced an 800x600 clamshell LCD
with a 1024x768 screen, but I don't know what the 1024x768 LCD came
from? If you're using OS X, a higher resolution LCD would be a
fantastic upgrade for any clamshell, especially one with 8MB VRAM.
I'd try to find out what that higher res LCD was.

As long as the physical constraints are met, I would think that it is
possible but would probably require some intricate "adjustments" with
regard to board connectivity and the like. That said, the cost of
doing so probably would become prohibitive real quick. Sort of like
putting a V8 into a Nash Metropolitan...

What you want to do is look for a clamshell LCD.

Oh yeah, unless something in the system's glommed onto a file, but
then you should get a 'This Volume cannot be ejected it's busy' type
error. Try booting and holding down the mouse button. If it ejects
then then it was a software error not a hardware one.
