RE: QuickSilver G4 1.0Ghz DP help

2010-03-23 Thread Stewie de Young

I recently got a QuickSilver G4 1.0Ghz DP for 25 bucks I was informed it
was freezing up but the previous owner thought it might have been RAM related.
I've changed out the RAM and run several runs of XBench (figured this would
stress enough for problems to come out). I have seen no problems via that. I
don't have any Apple Hardware Diagnostics that works for this Macintosh (is
this available as a free download from Apple by any chance?). I have noticed
something though - The heatsink on top of the processors seems to get VERY HOT.
Like if I shutdown the computer and open the side and touch the heatsink it is
just cool enough so it doesn't cause a burn, is this normal? I have checked the
fan that is under the shroud that routes out of the case and it spins and runs
so its not that that isn't working. If this processor normally runs hot is
there any better way to cool it a side fan doesn't seem like a very effective
way of cooling
(I'm from the PC World where heatsinks have fans on top).

Next question I plan on setting this up as a server and want to add
harddrives to it but have noticed there are a total of 5 or 6 molex plugs for
internal harddrives however most of them route inconviently. Is the PSU on this
computer adequate enough to run 4 hard drives if I get splitters? If not does
this take a standard ATX based PSU or do I need to get a compatable higher
wattage one?

Thank You,
Albert Carter

Any of the QS and MDD models esp dual CPUs I have had anything to do with run
hotter than any of the previous G4 series.
In saying that though you can reduce the heat quite a bit by a reapplication of
the thermal paste between the processor and heatsink.
You can also buy third party cooling fans to help reduce temps too.

The PSU on those should be fine for running that amount of hard drives.

Sometimes the card can have the wrong firmware for the speed of the
chips if it's a flashed PC card, or perhaps is just running to hot.
Either way, the result is similar to what you describe, the card
starts off OK and then gets more and more video glitches as it warms
up. If it's running too hot, a better heatsink or fan will fix it. If
the firmware is causing it to run too fast for the chips, the solution
is to underclock the card to match the speed to the VRAM chips
soldered on the card. This is normally fairly simple. I believe you
can even do it using a Preferences Pane called "ATIccelerator II"? If
you want to experiment, there is near zero danger when underclocking a
card to a slower speed. The only real danger is in overclocking to a
higher speed. The OEM Radeon 7500 has 270MHz GPU and 200MHz VRAM. You
could try slowing the VRAM and/or GPU to see if that eliminates the
problems.

Your card is probably getting too warm because it has to supply power, USB and
the video signal through the card itself to the ADC studio display.
I have a similar setup ( Cube 440MHz + 17" studio display) but I chose to buy
an Nvidia 6200 256mb flashed PC card ( VGA + DVI output ) and then a Dr Bott
DVIator
http://www.dviator.com/us/DVIator.html
plus another Cube PSU plugged into the adapter to take the pressure off the
cube re the power supply.
Works well plus I have 256mb of video goodness.
Now I'd like to get a 22" Cinema Display to run through it.

In Safari ... IIRC:

if you then look at Window > Downloads, you'll see it being downloaded

When it finishes downloading, name the video.flv file ... yourname.flv

I really think some of the problem playing back video clips in a

Apple hasn't straightened the problem out.

It seemed to be happening in Quicktime, when I first tried

The easiest way that occurs to me ... (possibly there are easier

off Spotlight indexing for those drives.

Open Spotlight in System Preferences and add the external drives to
the "Privacy" tab. That should turn off indexing for those drives.
(The drives will of course need to be attached to the machine so that

Since your son's machine is using Snow Leopard I would hope it's not a
case of Spotlight being fooed up. But WTHDIK?

Sorry to hear that. Last time I glanced around, no one bothers with
publishing methods for hacking into WEP any longer. Instead it has
more the air of a contest. "How quickly can you hack past WEP?"

At this point in time WEP strikes me as the security equivalent of a
spring loaded door latch. Sure the door is "locked". But almost anyone
who wants to get past it will do so as though the door was unlocked.

Because I live where I do I often go out for short trips without
bothering to lock a door of my house. Basically my security protocol
is counting on the statistical likelihood that no will bother. I think
that's pretty much the same security used on a the vast majority of
home wireless setups at the moment. :-(

It's quite possible that they only do the "check" on clients

From the hotel's POV... the issue is the liability of having
untracked clients (non-guests) use their network. So it makes sense
that wired ether is NOT checked - after all, you have to be
physically in an authorized location to get to that connection.

Re: Utube on a Cube

2010-03-23 Thread brchrnr
Hi:

I just got a digital audio 533mhz dual (798mb memory, ATI Rage 128 Pro
graphics). I put in partitions with panther, tiger and leopard to test
performance differences. None of them quite played clean youtube, but
10.3 was the closest. So I ran Monolingual (which discards extra
languages) and threw out some apps I don't use. Then loaded the latest
Opera browser, and that allowed Panther to run youtube cleanly. Also,
before I went through this I saw and used a suggestion to use mobile
youtube (http://m.youtube.com/) and that worked too.

I have never been able to connect to WPA Personal on any machine with an

I think some folks think all Airport cards are equal, that's not the case. :-)

My G4 had issues with youtube vids even with a 1.8GHz processor upgrade 1.5GB

Try click to flash, it'll force H.264 if available that seemed to help out a

frees up some processor power)

you are correct, no physical mods unless you want ADC, just two wee pieces

why I downgraded to a Radeon 9000 when I got the ADC flat panel. (and that G4
