Hello ! !

2010-07-03 Thread Chris House
I have recently become the owner of a 4 x 2.5 Ghz PowerPC G5 Mac.

Could anyone help me with advice on Java, there are some applications
that won't run on this machine at present, due, it seems to out of
date software. Is there any guide to the most up to date s/ware I can
run on this machine? If anyone could help with this info it would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris.

Java has good support for PPC. Just download the latest version from sun.com
.
The Quad G5 is a very fast machine, and should be able to run any Java app.
It is a bit faster than the current Macbooks, so it should do just fine.
Sent from a computer running either the SPARC, Itanium, or PowerPC
architecture.

Greetings All

I was sure that this was the answer to my problem of not being able to
write CD's that would play on my Toshiba SD-6109C integrated CD/DVD
player, Amplifier.

Well yesterday I received a spindle of 25 650MB CD disks that I

wont play.
I guess that I'll just give up and tell my wife that she'll have to
play the music on her Lamp Shade iMac.

Thanks for everyones help.

 Forget the format, this has nothing whatsoever to do with burning the disk;
iTunes converts the data to correct red book format when it burns an Audio
CD. If your Toshiba player will play CDR's at all, it's likely that it only
plays 74 minute/650 mb disks; see my earlier reply.

You're talking about picking things out of ~/Library/Application
Support/, ~/Library/Preferences, ~/Library/appname, and perhaps
other places ... And worse, this issue would have to be revisited
*every time* those apps were updated.

I guess you could just grab all of ~/Library. But that won't follow
aliases etc.

IMO, you'd be much better off making a CCC of /Users, then creating a
job to update it incrementally. Mine runs every day at 5:02. Takes
between 10 and 30 mins (depends on how active I've been that day).

Oh, tell CCC to ignore Library/Caches There's nothing there you
ever need or want.

If space on the backup device is an issue... You could tell it to
ignore your music and movies too...

Select the source.
Hit the gear pop-up to the right of that, and pick Edit Filters.
Click Show Avanced Options
Then add an entry to the Custom Rules list.
Change the field it creates to be exactly
- Library/Caches

Note the - sign. That means exclude. Leave off the initial /. That
way it will match both /Library/Caches and /Users/jeff/Library/Caches
etc.

If you hit the ? button in that dialog, it will display instructions.

Re: Hello ! !

2010-07-03 Thread Kris Tilford

Java has good support for PPC.

No, this isn't correct. Java support for the PPC was cut-off
completely over a year ago. Starting with Java Update 4 for Leopard
10.5 the Java updates were Intel only. The consequence is that all
PPC Macs running Tiger or Leopard are left at Java version SE5
1.5.0_24 whereas the current Java for Intel Macs is Java SE6 1.6.0_20.

What's funny is that Sun quit Java 1.5 support in Dec.2009 with
version 1.5.0_22 but Apple has continued to 1.5.0_24. Alternatively,
Sun brought out Java 1.6 in Dec.2006 and is now at update 20, so this
means PPC Macs are 21 updates behind, or 3.5 years behind the current
Java version.

Just download the latest version from sun.com.

Sun.com http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp just has a link
back to Apple. Apple handles all the Java updates for OS X, and the
very first PPC software that Apple quit supporting was Java. AFAIK
there will NEVER be Java SE6 1.6 available for PPC Macs. I know this
because I use a Java program that requires Java SE6 1.6 in its current
version, and I've been forced to use an older version written for Java
SE5 1.5 on my PPC G5. I've looked hard into this issue, and if anyone
knows of a way to get Java SE6 1.6 running on a PPC Mac that would be
incredible since Apple no longer supports PPC Macs at all. If you want
to test your Java version, you open Terminal and type the command:
java -version without the quotes.

Also, there is a java test page at http://www.javatester.org/version.html
but this has problems with Safari and can seize up your Safari.
Safari SERIOUSLY needs to follow Chrome Firefox and make each tab or
window its own process so that one tab or window can't crash the whole
browser.

It sounds as if your iMac's thermal sensor(s) are getting faulty information.
Here's what Apple says in the service manual for the ALS model, 17-inch:

Fans are running at a constant high speed
If the fans on the system are running at a constant high speed, or ramp very
quickly to
high speed and do not vary this speed once reached, the fans are most likely
receiving
incorrect thermal input. In these cases you should use the following steps to
resolve:
1. Reset the SMU ... and then test to see if the fans still exhibit the issue.
2. Boot from the iMac G5 Install DVD or another iMac G5 of the same type in
FireWire
Target disc mode and see if the issue persists. If the fans run normally here,
reinstall
the system software. Be sure to give the system enough time to recreate the
issue
when booted to these other volumes.
3. Verify that the hard drive sensor cable is plugged in correctly. If
necessary, replace the
hard drive sensor cable.
4. Replace the hard drive (the hard drive includes the sensor on the hard drive
carrier).
5. Replace the main logic board.

I don't remember what you've done to your iMac, but you also might want to
check the quantity and quality of the thermal paste or pads between the GPU,
CPU and the bridge chip (all are under the big G5 shield, which means you may
have to disassemble your iMac to check). It's possible that a previous owner or
service person either didn't renew the thermal paste/pads, didn't use the
correct ones, or left one out. I've seen all of these happen, which is why I
never take anything or anyone for granted when diagnosing a new-to-me Mac.

If any logic board capacitors were replaced, it's possible that one or more
might not be correctly soldered in place, which could be causing the fan
problem. I've replaced caps on iMac G5s, and have experienced ramped up fan
noise until I resoldered several caps again.

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test, Quick and Extended? This might give you a
clue.

Probably better to read up on it in the TM Help or ask on Apple

Re: time machine back ups

NO! Never trash anything from a TM volume. Those old files are data
that TM backed up originally, and most likely include things like the
OS. Let TM do its own thing space-management wise.

Trash whatever date and back that you feel is no longer viable. Or they'll

I never thought of that. I thought the OS remained intact and the incremental
backups were just that. When mine gets too full I increase the drive capacity
or do a CCC and start over again. My TM is a 1TB my main is a 500. I go back to
Feb at the moment I have 90 GBs of space left on the TM. All my movie and music
files are on separate drives to keep the working drive and TM in line.
