Thanks, Pete, I had gone to that page and it looked doable, but I
wondered if there were any motherboard problems with the M5183 that
would still cause problems. taping the pins looked like you'd better
have a steady hand and plenty of patience, when they mentioned crazy
glue I wondered if the article was not meant to be taken seriously.

I think I'll give this a try and let you know if it works.

I'm also wondering if this explains the problem the poster had last
 week.

Truth be told it's not that difficult to do the tape method although the
method shown on mac elite is probably not the easiest - I find it much
easier to first stick a length of tape to a flat surface and cut a sliver
off lengthways about 12th inch wide (I just guess) - then apply it to mask
the pins and trim leaving enough extra just to curl under the bottom of the
connector to make it more secure. Two minute job reallyyou will know if
it's not correct as the mac will not boot but no damage is done to the mac
or the card.

Mac Virus; subject re-visited

2010-09-17 Thread Wallace Adrian D'Alessio
A few weeks ago the subject of virus infection for Macs raised it's annual
spectral head.

Bruce who administers to many Macs attested to the lack of evidence thereof.

I finally ran into the IT director of our university journalism and mass
media department on one of his frequent Starbucks pit stops. He confirmed
that of the 400 plus Macs which he oversees he has never run into a virus
problem nor even a credible threat of any sort to Mac OS X. The machines
range from aging iMacs and an occasional Sawtooth or QS to G5s, new iMacs
and many MP Intel Macs . These run Tiger in some cases but most have the
latest Snow Leopard upgrade. OS X Server is also used extensively and the
server setup is humongous ( I have never seen such an industrial
installation of Macs and RAID hardware in my life )

This department handles all media education and all campus media for a
moderately large state university.

Re: Weird G5 problem

2010-09-17 Thread Charles Davis

More thoughts today (16th)

The problem shows on the system that SHOULD be pristine! (Fresh
install) Not on the one that is an 'update' and transfer from a MDD.

Have tried an external USB modem, It isn't seen as usable either.
[Thats why I went to the trouble to have the two example OS Systems on
adjacent partitions on the internal(to the (G5) HD. That's what is so
weird about it, Exactly (same physical pieces) the same hardware, Only
a 'Reboot' to the other software and the problem shows up.

There probably should be an error message from Migration Assistant
saying that the network settings didn't transfer correctly. I
believe it would be titled Transfer Warnings and Errors.rtf.
Probably on Desktop or Documents.

You need to open System PreferencesNetwork and see if the internal
modem is shown. If it's not shown, it should automatically recognize
the modem when you open System Preferences, and if it doesn't,
you've got a problem with one of the hardware extensions not
loading. I can tell you how to troubleshoot this if this is the
problem. If you have the internal modem shown as a network port,
you'll need to reconfigure it to the correct settings (same settings
as the working system), and it should work.

- 2010-09-05 22:13:28 -0400 Some files from launchd (from old Mac)

Hi Kris:

Only message found.

Can't check the SPNetwork at this time (I'm booted with the working
OS to get Om-Line) but my memory says that the modem just doesn't show
up going through 'setup' and 'diagnostic help', the modem just
shows as 'failed'.

[When we get this solved, then there is another little 'gotcha' with
the 'screen saver'.]

Re: G4 Power Mac M5183 up grades!!!

2010-09-17 Thread Richard Gerome

I hooked up this G4 Power Mac M5183 that I've been working on to the HP
w2338h Monitor with the original video card that came with the Tower when new,
my first boot the resolution was 1440x900 @ 59 Hertz (it was calibrating on
boot) then we shut it down and rebooted and it calibrated again, now it's up to
1920x1080 @ 60 Hertz and that is max for this monitor and it's full screen
too... I am wondering if this is good or could this ruin the monitor or video
card???
Another question I have is I went to install my OS 9.2.2 retail disc and it
wouldn't work (it worked with Jaguar???) So I downloaded OS 9 Netboot but it
only runs classic, she can't boot into OS 9 from the Startup Disc in System
Preferences, now she has the original OS 9.1 install disc and the restore disc
if I run these will it erase Tiger??? She is really very happy with it so far
and thanks everyone here who help me do this!!! Right now she is switching the
monitor cable from HP PC Tower to Power Mac Tower and we are looking for a
switch box so she doesn't have to do this in the future...

Scars only tell us where we have been, they do not have to dictate where we are
going...
