G'day

My Mail uses port 995, which I believe is the usual port.

Actually, the port most mail servers user to send mail to the client is
110. That is Pop3. You can set the mail to be sent on any port you
want. That is not always wise, as is the case here. What needs to be
done is set the mail program to listen for mail on port 587. There
should be a way to do this. There is with every mail program I have
used. Unfortunately, I have never used mail. Lo siento, Dennis

Are you using POP or IMAP protocol? The standard port for receiving mail
on IMAP is 993, and SMTP sends mail on port 465 or 587. Also check with
Qwest about SSL/TLS and secure authorization settings for receiving mail.

I think the POP ports are 25 for SMTP 110 for receiving but it's been a
long time since I've used POP, and again you will need to check the
SSL/TLS and secure authorization settings with Qwest. A Google search
should provide the answers, or you can always roll the dice with
"customer service."

Fink

I've read the FAQ on the Fink project but I'm still not entirely clear
on what exactly it is. Is it an operating environment a la Java, or an
emulator like Virtual Box or Wine? Is it strictly a repository of ported

Also has anyone had any positive or negative experiences with Fink?

Do you have "after-market" drivers (sort of speak)?

I'm told by the seller of the card the FH-UF2 card works with 10.4.11
And, in an off list response Felix wrote: "In my experience, PCI FW

But, I posted the card on the LEM Swap list and a responded asked
about compatibility with OS 9

Macally offers a (# USB Card Support 1.4.1for OS 9) driver for their
7 port USB2.0/FireWire PCI card (FH2-UF24)

Regrettably, Macally tech reports:
"Unfortunately the drivers applied to FH-UF2 are all posted on Macally

So, John, might you point me to a driver that would compatiblize the
FH-UF2 with OS 9 ?

Port 995 is the usual port when getting POP mail via SSL

The OP needs to check Qwest's help web pages to find the proper settings.

It is a software repository with apt-get functionality, like MacPorts or
DarwinPorts. I think they do it this way for the *nix aficionados who like
that way of installing software.

I haven't used fink but I have used MacPorts and it works okay.

It's a way of installing *nux-based applications easily, downloading source
code, managing prerequisites and dependencies, compiling and installing all
the required libraries and dependent packages automatically, and doing it in a
way that Apple updates will not break the installed applications.

It is identical to what MacPorts (aka Darwinports) does; I think most of the
up-to-date stuff has moved to the MacPorts project, but I could be wrong. Fink
and Macports happily co-exist on a Mac, but you'll end up with duplicates of
things like the Gnome libs because each installs in it's own directory
structure.

All applications installed in this fashion either run on the command line or
via X-Windows; this is *not* a way of installing Mac-native ports of these
applications...if they have one of those, there should be standard Mac
installers for them.

Re: Fink

2010-12-11 Thread Kris Tilford
I believe MacPorts is preferable to Fink. You need to have X11 and the
Developer Tools (Xcode) installed. Then install MacPorts. MacPorts is
command line from Terminal. As a GUI similar to Software Update I've
been using Porticus, which is really nice and very simple to use.
Porticus is better than Software Update because it shows the entire
available software repository of MacPorts and allows you to select any
available software for installation or deletion. It would sure be nice
if Apple would improve Software Update to have an uninstall/deletion
feature.

The problem with Apple is that if they decide to make an OS X software
repository they'll want to control it completely the way they try to
control iPod, iPhone, iPad software in iOS. Without any control so-
called bad-apples can introduce malware into the software
repositories, but with control Apple acts both as a gatekeeper and a
toll collector. How long before the OS X App Store arrives, it can't
be too far off.

I have mixed feelings about that. I like the idea in concept but it

Yes I like the current setup just fine. I have a pretty good idea what
apps I can trust and it's not too hard to get references on those that I
don't know. I don't want an app nanny to decide what I can and can't

Did you try the Option key boot?

I have this same iBook with 10.4.11, which if you can beat the
artificial installer block will run fine without any modification.

One other thing, this iBook can boot from USB if necessary, but it's
slow since it's USB 1.1.

Do you know how to reset the NVRAM and PMU? Both may be helpful with
boot issues. These old clamshells are a little voodoo prone regarding
booting. I've once rebooted many times in a row using the Option key

booted fine, even from an external USB CD drive.

I tried resetting the pmu, and all the above suggestions. Nothing works. It
just sounds like it is trying really hard to read the cd, but it won't boot
off it or show up on the desktop.

You sure your OS X discs are CD's and not DVDs?

Did you try the Option key boot with the OS X disc in the unit?

Yes I'm positive they are CDs. I have installed OS X on other laptops
including a clamshell. I have tried the options key to no avail.

Thanks for all the input thus far!

I would suggest popping a cleaning CD into the drive. It might help.
I have had similar issues in the past and giving the drive a clean did
the trick even when it did not really seem like it should be the
problem.

I usually set it to master as it's the only device that is on the IDE
chain in said enclosure.

Time to invest in a cleaning CD. That it reads only seems to read one disk
says the drive needs cleaning.

Are you talking about a FW-IDE enclosure? If that's the case then Master.

If this is some kind of IDE external enclosure then the setting is dependent on
what it is connected to it

This is the enclosure I'm using: http://www.deltrontech.com/PDF/0502/E5.pdf
I had the drive (Pioneer 118L) with the jumper set the cable select (left it
that way after pulling it out of the G4 MDD it was in previously)
And for some reason, I'm guessing the jumper setting, when importing a CD into
itunes not only took what seemed like forever, but the drive spun up rather
strangely??

Then after Daniel and others told me to set to Master, I needed to use
handbrake to import a movie to iTunes and was pleasantly
surprised when it took a pleasing 16 mins to encode! If my itunes CD import
works as good, all is great in my world!:-)
