May I ask if you have a pair of RJ-45 crimpers?
They usually include a place to cut the cable prior to laying the
wires into the RJ-45 connector.

Getting internet sharing to work in Tiger is a nightmare - it takes lots

As much as I rag on Leopard, at least Apple fixed internet sharing in

ROFLMAO. Right you are. Enlarge = enbiggen. Embarrass = emblush. Or something
like that.

Reminds me of a writer on my staff who used to make up words when he couldn't
find the right word in the dictionary because he didn't know how to spell it.
Amazingly, he always spelled the made-up word correctly (according to English
usage rules), but couldn't find "real" words even when he was given hints.

OTOH, that's why English is an always evolving, living language. Which is a
good thing. Imagine what it would be like if the English-speaking world hadn't
evolved beyond Middle English. If you can't imagine that, try reading a couple
pages of Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" in the original ME text, and
then figure out what he was talking about. :^)

It appears your iMac doesn't have an Airport card installed?

If you're lucky and have a USB 2.0 G4 iMac you can use faster Airport
cards or even used a USB wireless adapater. It might be smarter to use
a USB adapter, generally any with a Broadcom chipset can be recognized
in OS X identically as Apple "Airport" using all the built-in OS X
software. Otherwise, an Airport Extreme 802.11b/g card is the OEM card
for the USB 2.0 G4 iMac, although there may be newer 802.11n cards
that fit, I don't know?

If you're unlucky and have a prior model with only USB 1.1 you're
kinda stuck. These use an original Airport 802.11b card, and the USB
is too slow to go any faster than 802.11b, so even though you could
use a faster USB adapter, it would still be going slowly because of
the USB limitation. You can open up the iMac and look for the Airport
card, and if there's not one installed and you need wireless, buying
an original Airport 802.11b card is probably the best solution. The
fastest solution will be to use the wired ethernet cable at 100 Mbps.

FYI maybe this will help: G4 867 Quicksilver -- OS X Tiger 10.4.11, USB

Quicksilver online with a USB adapter. It's a Belkin 54g USB Network
Adapter with a driver called Wireless Utility v 1.2.80u which took me a
whole day to FIND even (BF had an older version of the driver which
worked on HIS Quicksilver, a dual 1 GHz running Tiger 10.4.3). I'm not
familiar at all with iMacs (never used one) but this adapter and driver
got my Quicksilver online, so if your iMac has USB, I don't see why this
wouldn't work for you too, Jane. Also need to mention: I don't notice
ANYTHING slow about my Quicksilver's Internet performance at all. At my
previous residence, the Quicksilver was directly connected to the
router, which "fed" the Airport-equipped Mini and also my iBook and the
Quicksilver's connection is just as good either way.

You're correct, scaling does not convey any more detail.

However it's a better solution for a picture you do not have in the correct
resolution than letting the mac stretch it.

Here is the image I linked to earlier:

Here it is blown up in SmillaEnlarger to screen size for a 27" iMac:

It's a little soft, a little grainy, but a lot better than just letting the Mac
stretch it.

For the purposes of having something pretty to have on my desktop it's
perfectly acceptable, imo. YMMV.

That's a kernel panic - the OS itself crashed. There will be a panic
log that you can view with Console.app, that might point to what went
wrong.

In the short term, try rebuilding your kernel cache. Do this by
booting into Safe Mode (hold down shift key) then immediately
rebooting normally.

I admit for an image I HAD to have and could not find in HD upscaling
sometimes gave me an image I could center on the screen and live with for a
while.

But upscaling for a 23 inch screen leaves a lot to be desired. And this new

Another reason I love my Kensington trackball, the Kensington software lets me
really fine tune the responsiveness. If I move it fast, all I need to do is
move the ball through about 90 degrees to whip the cursor all the way across
the screen.

Well, two things:

A lot of the pix at APOD are really big. This one

It turned the images of the Golden Rays here

bad at all, certainly not exceedingly pixelated.

Really, you shouldn't have to remove any of the insulation. The
point of the crimper is to make the little spikes dig thru the
insulation into the wire, to make a good connection. Alignment is,
of course, critical. It also helps to hold your tongue just right
and mutter an incantation as you squeeze.

How many of the pairs does RJ 45 use?

100Base uses four wires, as two twisted pairs. The twists and the
other wires provide shielding.

1000Base uses all of 'em.

There should be some good wikipedia articles on ethernet over twisted
pair that describes this stuff.
