OS X and MacOS 9 on the MDD
There is NO MYSTERY here. The MDD shipped with OS X v10.2.8 system specific install disk set. Plus a MacOS 9.x Restore Disk set that installs MacOS 9.x, after OS X, with a specialized MDD System ROM for MacOS 9.x. If you don't have the full set of either, You must perform an install a retail OS X 10.4.11, and use the Netboot disc set downloaded, and installed from Apple to install MacOS 9.x, but after install, BEFORE restart, remove the two Netboot Extensions to the Disabled Extensions folder in the MacOS 9.x System file, then restart. You may also have to remove a couple of the non-working ATI video drivers from the MacOS 9.x System Folder to disable them. Firmware level of the MDD for OS X must be at 4.2.8(f), and the ROM for MacOS 9.x at netboot level, or equivalent. Firmware updates on the MDD must be done usually from MacOS 9.x. I have the original OS X Install Set, and the Restore Set that installs MacOS 9.x on the MDD.series systams. I will make a post of the CDR masters for both sets to mediafire, or yousendit etc.. that anyone can download and burn media from Disk Utitity. This silliness for obscuring, impeding the use of Mac hardware has got to cease. I will burn and mail a full MDD disk setn for the cost of the media period for those who don't want/can't be bothered to learn how to do it themselves. I would get a new hard drive and do a clean install of 10.4, see if that fixes things. When hard drives first start to fail they randomly lock up. 10.4, 10.3, 9.2, safe mode, single user mode... all these access the hard drives in slightly different ways. I had very similar symptoms in my Cube and was lucky enough to copy my files and get a new hard drive in before the failure become a disaster. How to Auto-shutdown during sleep?
I have set up a Mac for public use. It starts up and shuts down automatically at the beginning and end of the day -- but the shutting down works only if the Mac is being used at the scheduled time. I like to have it sleep and log off after some time though, because there’s not that many people using it. How to make it shut down according to schedule even if it’s sleeping or logged off? It’s a GigE with 10.4.11 and limited-user accounts in English, German and Italian to accommodate different users; that’s why I let it log off. Any ideas? I have the feeling I’m missing an easy way to do this. Get the BIG-ASS electrical load off the DP G5 circuit. Try running the Intel and !!!heater!!! off of separate circuits. HEATER! Damn, with a DP G5, you should be looking for AC, not heat. Whole thing is non-sense from this observers' POV. Got power problems, by a nice APC UPS rated at 1.5KW for ~$150.00 to $200.00. Have an electrician install two separate new home run circuit to your computer room. and load balance the main electrical panel. This is cheap insurance for all systems and won't cost any more than the deferred maintenance you have NOT been paying for for 3-years. Clean up any dirty gounds, separate, don't share neutrals with disparate circuits, while you're at it. Shut down your DP G5 and open it up. RR the optical drive with specialized screw set from the unit. Make any minor adjustments to the drive itself, and to bottom legs to get the chasis level. Stand the system, reinstall the optical drive with the specialized screw set. Adjust the drive to clear the door when ejecting the tray. Preserve the external shimming of the upright system unit as you put it where it wil lbe running. While you are inside the unit, if dusty, blow it out you lazy housekeeper! Check your video card fan while you are at it. Lastly, just give the DP G5 away to someone who would be grateful to receive it, not treat it as a an excuse for drama. My MDD is the 1.25GHz bought in '03 Q1. All I recall, is that it was important to me (at the time) that it was billed as the last model that would boot into OS9 (as opposed to running in classic 'mode'). You can have a dual boot OS X v10.4.11, plus MacOS 9.x, on the same partition, or on different drives. Your can (well, I can) select Start- up disk from either OS System Preferences/Start-up Disk, either way. Never had a problem. I have a G4 Mac Mini 1.25 that I want to overclock to 1.42, has anyone had experience doing this? Also by chance is there a set of instructions on how to do it? I once overclocked a 1.42 to 1.5. I think 1.25 to 1.42 may be a stretch, but it might work. I Googled on the usual suspects and got a photo which showed the four chip resistors and a description of which gave which multiplier. The board is a rather thick 6- or 8-layer job, and desoldering a chip resistor is difficult, while soldering (or re-soldering) a chip resistor is nearly impossible. I cannot remember whether so-called zero-ohm resistors were used, or pull-ups were used. If you do try this, you can count on having to add more ventilation and better cooling. Those tended to have cooling issues without the overclocking. Most often this occurs when someone posts a CYMK image on the web instead of an RGB one with bad metadata. This error is a precautionary note. A lot of, if not most of the entries in the logs are for informational purposes and aren't serious errors. Only the last (and greatest) G4s are suitable for overclocking. RR the optical drive with specialized screw set from the unit. Make any minor adjustments to the drive itself, and to bottom legs to get the chasis level. Stand the system, reinstall the optical drive with the specialized screw set. Adjust the drive to clear the door when ejecting the tray. Preserve the external shimming of the upright system unit as you put it where it wil lbe running. While you are inside the unit, if dusty, blow it out you lazy housekeeper! Check your video card fan while you are at it. Lastly, just give the DP G5 away to someone who would be grateful to receive it, not treat it as a an excuse for drama. Secondly, the cost of rewiring the house along with upgrading/rewiring/replacing the breaker panel would be hundreds (perhaps thousands) of dollars, far exceeding the value of the heater, the G5 and the quad Intel combined (it’s a PC, not a Mac Pro.) And perhaps if I have some spare time and I feel like tinkering, I may give it a try. However, the G5 sucks power like a Hoover , and as you noted, turns my little home office into a sauna in the summer. For $100 in Xmas gift cards and some spare parts, I built a much more efficient machine to handle its function. If I was as well heeled as you seem to think I am, I would’ve bought a shiny new Mac mini to do the job. Drama? problems installing Leopard software on g4
Hi, I recently got a Leopard 10.5 dvd to install on my powermac g4. i made sure that my unit has all the correct requirements to run the OS (867MHz, 1.25GB RAM, 9000 radeon ati graphics card) but it is not installing correctly. an icon will appear on the desktop that prompts me to install the program and then tells me to restart the computer and the installation will begin after it reboots, but the installation never occurs. any advice or tips on how to make this work for me?? should i put the files on an external hard drive instead? please and thank you! It's not booting from the DVD after you press Restart. You've got to get the DVD to boot from the optical drive in order to install. Here's something else to try: Boot the Mac normally, and double-click the Install OS X which will restart. When it begins to restart, hold the Cmd-v keys and see what the verbose dialog says when it tries to boot from the DVD? Anna Have you tried inserting the Leopard install DVD after booting up normally, ignoring the prompt to install and closing that window, then going to System PreferencesStartup Disk, selecting the install DVD (it appears there, right?) as the system you want to start up your computer, and clicking on Restart? Just a thought. It's the way I usually install (and I don't know that Leopard would be any different - but I've never installed Leopard). Doesn't amount to anything more than what's already been suggested, maybe, but it's a different path that might yield a clue. Or even work. HP Deskjet 1000 Printer Mac OS 10.4.11 Drivers
Hello everyone, I just recently purchased a HP Deskjet 1000 printer. Unfortunately this printer does not have any drivers for Mac OS 10.4.11. I tried calling up HP to see if there are any beta drivers or any work arounds, there were none. I also did a quick Google search and did find one message board posting to see if anyone else might have a work around and came up dry. I was wonder if anyone in this group might have a work around to get this printer to work with Mac OS 10.4.11. I thought you had a older printer that HP quit supporting. You have a brand new printer than HP doesn't support below 10.5 Leopard. Have you tried installing the Leopard drivers? They may work, after all, Leopard is universal so this driver should also work on both PPC Intel Macs. If there's an installer limitation the won't allow installation on 10.4.11, you can download Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ for free and use it to install the Leopard drivers. Pacifist allows you to see where everything is installed, so if there was a problem you could open the driver package again and manually remove each file installed to revert back to your previous situation. If you wait, I'm certain the GutenPrint or HPIJS will add support for the Deskjet 1000 some day real soon now.
