Re: Pesky hardware problem

2011-10-18 Thread QuoVadis
@Don:

I think your eMac might just be too old. Here's why I think this is
the case:

I too use an eMac as my daily machine. It's the 1.25Ghz G4, has 2GB of
RAM. Everything else is standard (40GB disk, Radeon 9200 32MB).

If I want to play YouTube films on this machine, I need to select 360p
or 240p. In case of 360p I need to let it load the entire film before
playing, if I am to get a smooth framerate.
However, since YouTube is full of ads, I somtimes get an unacceptable
framerate because of one of the ads being an animated ad. To fix it, I
installed an ad-block extension to Safari to give some CPU time back
to the films instead of the ads.

Even though I get smooth playback, the machine is still loaded
heavily. Even starting Mail of TextEdit hurts framerates big time.

I'm not sure how the 1.42GHz eMac would handle this, but IIRC it also
has the 9200 onboard, with 32MB of RAM I believe. The 9200 (although
it supports CoreImage) is just not fast enough to handle YouTube
properly.

Greetings,

Eelco.

@Cheryl:

I'd buy a replacement PSU. Try finding one on the LEM swap-list. You
can install it yourself, if you know how to handle a screwdriver.

Or you could indeed replace it with another unit. I wouldn't, but I'm
biassed; I use a QuickSilver myself. ;)

If you are a tinkerer, it can be fun to keep old hardware that's going
awry and fix it, look for pieces here and there and whatnot.
Otherwise, there is a time when one should just sell it or give it

thanks to all for your input and advice! I'm buying a used Mac Mini
from someone on the swap list, but I may hold onto this computer or
give it to my friend who loves to tinker with Macs. I was wanting to
get a machine with a faster processor than this one and with a larger
hard drive. This computer has served me well for a few years since I
bought it from someone on the swap list.

Re: GMail phasing out basic view?

2011-10-18 Thread Geke
Thanks, that is something to try.
So far, I tried to change two strings on the about:config page
(extensions.lastAppVersion and extensions.lastPlatformVersion) from
7.0 to 3.0, and at first it seemed to work, even though those
strings were reverted to 7.0 after restarting TenFourFox.
But after a few tries GMail started to send me to the standard view
again.

Maybe it has something to do with cookies as well.
There's actually two points in here:
1. If possible, I'd like to get the basic view when I go to
mail.google.com using this browser.
2. If that doesn't work, I at least want to get basic view when I go
to https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html
The first option has the added advantage that the yellow bar across
the page You're using GMail in basic view. Update your browser, etc.
is not there.

if you really need
Would I put so much energy into this if I didn't clearly prefer the
basic view? I just don't like to wait for stuff I don't need.
I'm not on a super-highspeed connection and my computer isn't that
fast either. I wonder how people in developing countries are doing, or
anyone with a dialup connection for that matter.

Correct. My 1.42 GHz Mini, which I've overclocked to 1.58 GHz is too
slow to handle YouTube properly. I also have a 700 MHz eMac which does
about as well as the 1.58 GHz Mini.

My belief is that the bottleneck is indeed to video card in both of
these. They both have only 32 MB VRAM. I have several old 7500 Beige
G3 that are upgraded with 450 MHz G4 CPUs and 64 MB Radeon 8500 PCI
cards, and these slower older Macs do just about as well with
YouTube, perhaps even better sometimes, so the CPU speed isn't the
problem. Having a faster video card with twice the VRAM helps a lot,
but unfortunately there's no way to upgrade the video card on either
the Mini or the eMac, so they're permanently hobbled.

Here's one sad observation. Windows PCs that are really slow seem to
handle YouTube and other streaming video much better than Macs running
OS X. I've had 700 MHz P3 PCs with only 8 MB Radeon cards handle
YouTube BETTER than my Mini which theoretically is about 4x faster all
around. It seems this is something specific to the operating system or
more likely the video drivers being optimized, because Ubuntu Linux is
also slower on the PC.

You should be able to boot an Ubuntu Linux PPC Live CD on an eMac
just to see how it handles YouTube within Firefox. I don't think it
would be any better than OS X. I think you're stuck needing a newer
Mac with better video capabilities, which generally means an Intel
Mac, although PPC G5s and G4s with better video cards should do fine
with YouTube.

Most people use a real POP3 or IMAP Mail client.

Webmail interfaces something to be avoided, IMO. Really they serve
no real purposes in day-to-day email operations.

Adobe has had hooks into the video cards on PCs for years. That's
why Flash always performs better on Windoze.

WRT QT h.264 playing poorly on Macs... well, that's 100% Apple
craptastic codec. Try VLC. It contains much better codecs.

Authenticate Moving Files to USB Drive

2011-10-18 Thread Michael McMurtrey
My MDD G4 has a Verbatim USB drive which I use for backup and storage
of certain files. But when trying to save certain photos and text
files that I have gleaned from the internet, i get a message that i
don't have permission to save to this drive. So I save the files to
my desktop, but when moving the files from the desktop to the USB
drive, I get a message that the files cannot be modified and I have
to Authenticate the move with my name and password.

Seems to me i did not have this issue when I first connected the USB
drive. How do I eliminate the necessity to authenticate the move
every time I try to save a file to the USB drive?

Highlight the drive, and do a Get Info and under the Sharing
Permissions tab, check the box Ignore Ownership on this volume.

Re: My computer has a strange smell

2011-10-18 Thread Frank Rojer
Hello:

Is the fan running? I got a smell too years ago! I have a Quicksilver 2000
(OEM) with a clock rate of 1 Ghz from an American friend in the Netherlands.
I let a University use my computer while I was sleeping and
I was using a defragmenting program. The university did a lot of
calculations and my microprocessor's temperature went over 50 degrees
Celsius. I got a warning from the defragmenter which stopped!!!
Use a program to check if your processor is getting too hot!
A smell is some warning!
Give your computer a rest!
My computer was constantly online for 8 years till that University incident

and I'm using it now. The smell is there but I can't find anything

 Bad caps in the PSU.

Alas, these are not easily replaced.

Replacements, when available, are usually rated 85ºC, whereas the
 originals are usually rated 105ºC.
