Update OSX 10.4.7 to 10.4.11 but Software Update is crashing

2011-12-15 Thread Marc Avila
Hello,

We are tying to to upgrade a G4 running OSX 10.4.7 so that we can use the
Logmein service. Logmein is asking that we update to 10.4.11 but when we
try to run the Software Update or even by downloading and installing the
update combo pack for 10.4.11 it keeps crashing and never updates. Any
ideas on how to get the machine to update?

thanks,
-Marc

First: Crashing how? A Kernel panic?, A spinning pinwheel of death? 'An Error
has occured'? Check the system log for clues to what is going on at the install
time.
Second: Have you tried booting in safe mode (hold down the shift key at
startup) and installing the upgrade that way?
Second-and-a-half: Install and run Applejack
Third: all else fails, this would be one of the times to do anArchive & Install
of the OS.

But I'll wager the system log will tell you what's happening at the time it
crashes.

Failure to boot

2011-12-15 Thread Jeff Bequette

G5 DP1.8 (june 04)
Sys 10.5.8
4 gig ram
Hanns-G 25"
GeForceFX 5200
2TBhd, 700gb hd
HP printer
Radio shark

Since the last download of itunes (10.5.2), whenever I try to reboot
the computer, it gets to the Grey screen, starts the spinner, and then
turns off. I've restarted in safe mode, and run Applejack, the
works. When I reboot, same thing happens. I can start the computer
by holding the 'C' key but the sceen comes up chopped, as in 4
panels. Went to Sys Prefs and reset screen and all seems fine, but
I'm kinda scared to reboot now.

Where should I be looking to discover the problem? How do I know if
the video card is going out?

Re: General Hardware Q

2011-12-15 Thread Gottick International

OK, guys.

Have one of these 20-inch iMac(MB323LL/A) 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

It is supposed to come with a "Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive"

Question now is if "Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive" is enough specs for
me to get a new drive.

Will something like this UJ-825-C do?

Not sure. Physically it should fit, the issue is it the right interface. Look
in System Profiler, does the drive show up on the ATA or SATA bus? That will be
your guide. The rest is just mounting bracket and connection concerns, which
would be obviate by using a bare drive of some sort. The drives are mostly
universal, but each computer manufacturer will attach their own connecting
hardware and platform to it.

See:

The key is getting the right interface for your system and carefully
disassembling your existing one to reuse the apple-supplied bracket and
connector. I would think that the odds are extremely high that yours is a SATA
drive, which are pretty common.

Re: Update OSX 10.4.7 to 10.4.11 but Software Update is crashing

2011-12-15 Thread Kris Tilford

It shouldn't "just quit", there should be an error message saying it
"quit unexpectedly" and offer you some options to "Ignore" or "Send
Report to Apple". If you select the "Show Details" under the "Send
Report to Apple" it will show you the crash log for Software Update.
This can give a clue as to the problem.

I'd Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. Then run the
"10.4.11 PPC Combo Update" that you downloaded previously. Should work.

The 'C' key normally boots a disc from the optical drive. Are you
booted from a CD or DVD?

Where should I be looking to discover the problem?

This sounds a little like a dead PRAM battery to me. If you've never
replaced the PRAM battery, it's almost for certain that it's a dead
PRAM battery, they only last about 5 years max, and this would seem to
be more than 5 years.

How do I know if the video card is going out?

Not too likely it's going out. You might re-seat it if you're worried,
but it's not common for these to fail, and since you corrected your
video problem in System Preferences, this indicates the card is likely
fine, and that the parameters for the video were lost because the PRAM
battery was dead.
