That message is one you get if you copy the OS 9 system folder from an
installer disk onto the hard disk and attempt to boot that OS from the hard
disk. Holding down the C key boots from the CD-ROM, not the HD.

What it sounds like is that:

You still have the installer disk in the optical drive.

You copied the System Folder from the installer disk rather than ran the
installer.

By some means the Startup Disk was set to the copied OS 9 system folder on
the HD.

Try booting with the option key held down. This should give you a screen
showing every bootable system available to the computer from any attached drive.

I would use the Option key and boot into OS X. Then delete the OS9 System
Folder on the HD then boot from the installer disk and install OS 9. Also open
System Preferences, select Startup Disk and select your OS X System folder.

The C key boots from the optical disc drive. Did you forget to remove
the disc from the drive, and you're booting the 9.2.1 installer CD?

But if I try to boot into my OSX,

How do you "try" to boot OS X? Methods might including holding the X

You can always zap the PRAM by holding the Cmd-Opt-P-R keys for
several chimes. You can reset the NVRAM by holding the Cmd-Opt-O-F
keys and at the Open Firmware prompt type the commands:

set-defaults
reset-all
Where means hit the Return key. The response should be "ok"
to the 1st command, and a restart to the 2nd command. Use the Option
key to select between different bootable systems such as OS X or MacOS
9.x. If you can't boot from a HD System, you'll need to boot the OS X
installer CD/DVD and run Disk Utility>Repair Disk from the Installer
menu.

If you're having problems booting OS X you can hold the Shift key at
startup for a Safe Boot which will only load the minimal Apple
extensions, but more importantly will trash & rebuild the System cache
files. Once booted in Safe Boot you can restart normally.

If you're booting into OS 9 via the C key, you're booting from the OS 9
installer. Normally you will only ever see ""The system software on the startup
disk only functions on the original media, not if copied to another drive." of
you dragged the System Folder from the OS 9 installer to the hard drive.

Try booting from your OS X installer dis and running Disk Utility; this might
even be a case for Repair Permissions.

Re: Webcam for Mac

2012-02-08 Thread Scottls

I'm sure you'll get a bunch of responses with this one but first
search and download 'Macams' as it will allow you to run a multitude
of different USB powered webcams.

Second I would like to recommend a webcam by Rocketfish, model number
RF-HDWEB. I prefer this one because it is capable of taking 8MP
stills, has great higher resolution video quility that can be
compressed rather easily, and has a built-in mic with superb pick-up
and gain. With a quick Google search you can find it for around $20
used or a little over $40 new.

I've never had any problems with any webcam I plugged in. Many webcams aren't
on macam's support list but work because there just aren't that many webcam
chipsets out there.

ANY UVC-compliant web cam will work out of the box.

As for audio quality, if it's that important, I'd invest in a decent mike
anyway. There are a bunch if USB ones out there that'll work with OS X out of
the box as USB audio devices, but I"m not entirely sure how far back that
support goes; the Mac I set up for that was running 10.5.

Webcam for Mac

2012-02-08 Thread Valter Prahlad
Hi people!

I'm looking for a cheap Webcam (with built-in microphone) to use with my
PowerMac G5 DP 2.7, with OSX 10.4.11.

>From what I got reading around, webcams with dedicated Mac drivers are
expensive.
OTOH, any UVC webcam (USB video device class) should work with any Mac with
OSX 10.4.9 or later.

AFAIK the Logitech C210 and Microsoft Lifecam VX-800 should be both UVC, and
the reviews say their quality is good - I'm not picky about video quality,
but I'd rather have a good audio.
But I'm not 100% sure they will work in a Mac (I could return them in case
they don't, but I'd rather have some info beforehand).

I know about Macam http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/index.html
but its webcam list doesn't include any webcam I found in the shops around.

Had any of you success in using a cheap (I mean 10-25$) "PC" webcam on your
Mac? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Valter

That is what I was looking for thank you. But I was hoping for more
options/functions. What if I happened to be using the computer at the time it
is scheduled to shut down will it warn and give me the option to delay or
cancel?
I didn't even realize that schedule button was there how long has it been
there? hmm just checked 10.4.11 its there guess I just never payed attention
that much on the energy saver panel. lol

Thank you
