Heat may be an issue for me.
I have two external drives in Newer cases that are the same size as
the Mini.
They are stacked next to the Mini and I propped them up so that some
air flows
beneath bottom one. I only boot from one of those externals which has
a 7200 rpm drive.

It seemed right from the beginning that heat was an issue and that
the fan seemed to run more than I'd like.
the mini and other drives are also located about head high in the room
so it's warmer up there.

Since I Repaired the drive it seems to be running better.
Good points here. Wonder if others have had issues with the Newer
cases
or recommend specific ext HD cases for heat issues.

I did as you suggested and there were HD issues and Disk Utility

Hope that solves it.

I did look for Crash logs before posting but found only reports on
specific software crashes.
Not sure I was looking in the right place.

Steve, what's NetBarrier X4 and a Kernal Pack?
I rarely use Spotlight so might be worth turning off but it can be

System Crash - Spotlight???

2008-10-29 Thread RediG3-5

Mini G4 10.4.11

I've had several Crashes recently
where I get that nasty black dialog telling me that I have to shut
down by pressing the power button for several seconds.

When I reboot, it seems that Spotlight begins indexing.

Recently, I've taken to shutting my computer down over night
and I'm wondering if the nightly indexing is happening the next day
and overloading my system.

comments and recommendations

Disable Registration prompt Quicken 2005

2008-10-25 Thread RediG3-5

I've been plugging away with a Classic version of Quicken
because in later versions they abandoned the always-updated
recent account open bar, but decided to reactivate my copy of Quicken
2005
in hopes that it would provide more customizable reports. It doesn't
but I'm happy to move another app out of Classic.

However, the registration prompt keep poping up and
you cannot register. I see on other forums that this is not an
uncommon problem
and there is a lot of dissatisfaction with Quicken being reported.

Does anyone know how to disable that Registration Prompt?

I'm also open to suggestions on personal financial software.
I'm looking a iBank and CheckBook and I think there's an open source
app
too that I'll track down.

Thanks,
Cliff

As is always too frequently, this is a constant revelation of my

Thanks to your prompting Kris I finally figured out how to "drag the

That did it.
Then the Dock disappeared but eventually I found it simply had to be
magnified more.

So as always, I appreciate the patient persistence of my friends on

It must not be. I do see the 1680x1050 option but as mentioned it
gives me an iBook sized desk top in the middle of the Display. I also
see the "Arrangement" tab in the the Display Preferences. The Patch
Read this indicates this is evidence of the patch installation. I
think maybe this iBook isn't compatible.

Thanks Bruce and others for the posts on the mirroring resoution
thing.
I did see your post and installed the patch.
It helps but the 1680 x 1050 gives me the iBook size screen on the
AOC. Very nice sharp image but sort of defeats the purpose of having a
22" monitor. I played around and find that 1024 x 768 seems like the
best option to fill the screen (same as my Dell setting) but still
some horizontal distortion.

Now I'm wondering at the difference between an "extended desktop" and
a mirrored one. I tried "turning off Mirroring" but the external
monitor just went black.

BTW Bill C, I played with the Hz settings and couldn't determin how
much an effect it makes, but the AOC manual warned about too high Hz
so I settled for the 60 Hz option

Thanks

I apologize for running a separate internal thread here since this in
not entirely applicable to Tom's situations.
However, as Tom points out the selection of monitors entails so many
variables.
We wanted an external monitor for a iBookG4 and as it turns out the
aspect ratio seems incompatible.

James, the only options I get are in System Preferences (OS 10.4.11)
1024x768 640x480 and 800 x600
The AOC shows the 1024x768. If my math is right, none of these options
are 16:9 .

I wonder if there is a software hack remedy for this?

thanks and I'm very interested in your final choice Tom

No nitpicking taken, Doug. Yes, I think you're right: a very artistic
"A".
I just played around with the control and found how to modify the
horizontal width etc.
But cannot get images down to a normal view.
So I mention this because it may be "asking" for a video card other
than the iBook offers
and this could be a factor (or certainly will be in my future
purchases) in deciding on a monitor.

Interactive software: image drop?

2008-10-06 Thread RediG3-5

mini G4
OS 10.4.11

I'm looking/hoping for software that will create
an interactive form where the user can drag and drop in image.

For example, the user would receive a printable calendar where they
could drag and drop inn their own photo in the photo field.

I'd hoped that this could be done in pdf, but it does not seem
possible in Acrobat.

Maybe it could be done in a stand alone Filemaker File?

Suggestions appreciated

QuickTime does not auto play iPhoto avi files

2008-10-04 Thread RediG3-5

iPhoto 1.0.6
QuickTime Player 7.5.5
min G4
OS 10.4.11

Now, since I don't know when, when I double click on a movie.avi file
stored in iPhoto
it opens QT but no player of video appears.

If the video file has already been edited then QT opens it and plays.

Seems it must have begun after latest QT upgrade.

suggestions appreciated.

WordPress versus Movable Type

2008-09-22 Thread RediG3-5

I've upgraded my server service and they're recommending WordPress.
Others suggest Movable Type.
I'm interested in any experiential comments and comparisons.

If this is two far off topic,
please respond off list.

Thank you,
Cliff

Newtwork icon on desktop

2008-09-12 Thread RediG3-5

mini g4 10.4.11

The Network icon suddenly showed up on the desktop.
Not a problem really, except I rarely make network connections
and wonder why it appeared.

comments appreciated

17" monitor recommendations

2008-09-09 Thread RediG3-5

I'd appreciate recommendations on 17" monitors
suitable for connecting to a G4 iBook
assuming that is workable.

Thank you
