Re: Power Mac G4 733mhz Digital Audio dilemma

Doesn't Leopard require a minimum 867 MHz CPU?

Leopard's *installer* does the speed check. ppc Leopard itself
will run on any G4/G5.

Thanks for clearing up that confusion on my part.

As long as the destination drive is big enough to hold the source,
you're good to go.

Um... Once you've done the clone, and booted the DA on it, remember
to go into the Sharing system preferences and change the machine's
name. Otherwise it can get a bit confusing, on your LAN. :)

Try a CCC version of Leopard ... I have a DA Dual 533 running Leopard.

Yea. Put the DA into Target Disk Mode (boot holding down T key) then
connect it to your QuickSilver with a firewire cable. Use Disk
Utility on the QuickSilver to erase the DA's HD then use CCC to slam
a copy of your existing system onto it.

Re: Power Mac G4 733mhz Digital Audio dilemma

2011-02-11 Thread Geke
1. I’d say go for Tiger or newer. Lots of software require Tiger or
newer, and Tiger is faster than Jaguar or Panther.

2. Leopard or Tiger? Speed depends on which programs you use and is
subjective anyway, so it’s hard to say if you’d be satisfied with
Leopard’s speed.

This may not be legal, but I would: borrow Tiger (10.4.11) and install
that, because it’s quick and simple. Then see if you like the speed
with your favourite programs. Subtract about 30%-40% from that speed
and you’d have a rough gauge of the speed under Leopard.

In fact, Leopard is not that much slower, but I’m trying to guess the
difference between a used-for-some-time Leopard and a fresh Tiger.
As I have little experience with Leopard, I welcome corrections to
this estimation!

Then use the Open Firmware method instead of Leopard Assist:

If you were needing to install Leopard on a lot of old Macs slower
than 867MHz you could probably make an install DVD missing the test
for 867MHz, but this would be slightly harder than the Open Firmware
hack above.

I think Tiger is best for G4 PPC Macs, but Leopard will do if that's
what you've got. If the QuickSilver is supported for Leopard you can
use Firewire Target disk mode between the QuickSilver and Digital
Audio to install onto the DA HD.
