Prices on Ram are volitle. Check in a couple of weeks. Try
www.tigerdirect.com They have mostly PC parts but they have RAM and
some other Mac parts for a good price.

RAM manufacturers frequently move forward. By that I mean that if you order
DDR2-3 it will be less expensive then PC-133 in most cases. There is like a
RAM curve. Where cutting edge machines RAM cost a little bit more then
machines out 3 months ago...machines a year old cost a little more than
machines from 3 months ago and RAM from machines 2 years back costs a
fortune because it isn't being made anymore. It's a common thing, where
people think that RAM for a machine 4 years old should be really cheap, but
they fail to realize that the industry has moved ahead and the supply is
low.

My question would be, is your machine a generation older or newer than your
buddies?

RAMSeeker shows prices more or less comparable to OWC.

These are for TWO 2Gb sticks. Is it possible you were looking at the
price for a 4Gb stick? I know OWC offers a 6Gb kit for laptops which is
$400+ because it consists of a 2Gb and a 4Gb stick and the 4Gb are
obscenely expensive because they are new/rare/really hard to produce.

The one I am on is a PC but my Mac is a G3. Possibly what has
happened is that DDR3 came out and the prices have gone up for DDR2
since like you say, people are changing and upgrading, but it does
fluctuate.

I just picked up a 4GB kit for my iMac today at Fry's. It was Crucial
ram DDR2 667MHz 2X2GB modules for $44.95. Saw the same thing on the
NewEgg web site for $39.95.

I would like 1GB (2 512s) for my QS ... but OWC says 32-36 per
512 ... which is the same price as last month.

Total for 2 is around $64-72 plus shipping.

A few years ago, I paid $69 (included shipping) for 1 512 stick at DMS.

Maybe I shouldn't wait too long?

World-wide recession.

The spot price (commodities auction) for memory chips fell BELOW
their actual manufacturing cost. Some of the companies are now on
the rocks, near filing for bankruptcy. They're asking their
governments for multi-billion-dollar bailouts.

I think you're going to see much much higher prices shortly.

Ahem. I spent $138 ($69 per stick, which was a *gargantuan* steal at

would take $138,000 to fill up, or very nearly twice the price of our

Of course, populated with 128K sticks, it would also be the SIZE of
our house

How did you update a 1Mb computer to .5 Mb.

I know I was happy when 1Mb SIMMs came down to $60. I even had a
spreadsheet running plotting the price with an estimate of when it would
hit a target price.

Scary indeed! I had to do the same clipping on one side of a resistor on my
SE's MB. Then even more scary I had to solder the resister back in place when I
bought an accelerator card with more RAM slots. The worst part of soldering the
resister back in place was my sweat dripping off my brow onto the MB and me
trying to keep the MB dry. LOL.

BTW -- I still have the SE in storage now with a SE/30 MB in place of the
original. Ahh, those were the days --glen

At the large mainframe computer manufacturer where I was employed in
an earlier lifetime, main storage was priced at one million dollars
per megabyte.

And, our 'puters had a maximum main storage capacity of eight megabytes.

Of course, that was 1976, and the memory was ECC and interleaved a
gazillion ways.

A four megabyte machine burned about 70 kilavolt-amperes of power ...
about the same as ten all-electric residences.

An eight megabyte machine burned about 140 kilavolt-amperes ... about
the same as twenty all-electric residences.

Ahhh The good ol' days!

Back in the 1970's, I was employed as the senior cinematographer/film
editor for the Safeguard anti missile R&D effort located within the
Kwajalein atoll. The missile site radar had banks of megnetic core,
(hats off to Dr. Wang), memory multiple modules about four times the
size of a traditional telephone booth. Against the far wall (which was
eight feet thick) were rows of tape drives that would literally shake
the building just prior to the launch of intercptor missiles.

Sweet memories indeed!

Did the plus have the snip the resistor? I remember doing it on an SE
but I can't recall doing it on any Pluses. In any event it didn't worry
me, I just cut the resistor in the middle of the lead and made a bit of
a gap. If I needed to undo it I would just dab a bit of solder on it.

I remember doing the upgrade on some friends SEs. I also remember
busting off the snap that held one of the SIMMs in place. Fortunately I
could wedge in a bit of wood to hold the SIMM in place.

Re: RAM prices going up??

2009-01-14 Thread hillhippy

I was wondering if name brand RAM (crucial/micron) Memory Size:
1024MB Memory Speed: 400MHz PC3200 Memory CAS Latency: 3 Memory Type:
DDR Pins: 184, will work in PM G5 2.7ghz running OS 10.4.11 if it is
not specifically listed for Mac. Price difference for 1gb sticks
seems to be about 2 X higher for Mac memory. I remember my older Macs
rejecting Fry's no name RAM but this stuff is Crucial brand.

Thanks
Leo

PPC G5's are supposed to be very picky about having matched/tested in
pairs RAM. I cheaped out when I upgraded mine (Canadian exchange
rates tripled the cost at the time) and went with name brand RAM
(Samsung) that didn't specify matched or 'for Macintosh.' I had no
problems with 10.4.11.

HOWEVER after I upgraded to Leopard -- 10.5.4 by the time I decided
to upgrade -- I started getting the occasional kernel panic and
noticed the computer was running much hotter most of the time
(Temperature Monitor) with the temperatures visibly climbing on
multi-tasking. When I upgraded to 10.5.5, the kernel panics got
ridiculous to the point of more than ten a day. I gave up, downgraded
to 10.5.4 and lived with the one or two kernel panics the final month
of using the G5, all the while lusting after the iMac I ended up
buying this month.

The RAM "may" have been the problem OR upgrading to NetBarrier X5
"may" have been the problem. I don't know, I don't care. I've listed
the G5 on my local kijiji just to get rid of it. (And as an aside,
I've also had to turn the heat on in the computer room for the first
time this winter now that my blast furnace isn't keeping me warm.)

FWIW.

Steve,

I upgraded to the G5 suddenly last year when my Quicksilver G4 had
some sort of board failure and roached the system drive. The G5 has
been very fast and dependable since I got it. It's great to be able
to run Aperture and CS3. Someday, I expect to bit the bullet and
upgrade to 10.5, but I'm not there yet.

I know about the space heater feature. We heat our house with a wood
stove and the computer is in a room on the cold side of the house
which seems much warmer since the G5 moved in.

I'll keep looking for a deal on matched sticks of RAM that are Mac
rated. I just hate paying more for possibly the same thing. Thanks
for the help.

Leo
