Check the process prioritites. You might be able to bump the
niceness of the playback job a bit, which will smooth it out, and
still not glitch up the recording.

I don't know if a dual 450 is going to be fast enough. I use a G4 1.42
GHz Mini as a media center. It plays or records video well. But
playing AND recording tends to throw some glitches in the playback.
Recording doesn't seem to be affected.

I use an 800MHz QS as a workstation and it plays video okay but
periodically it stutters some. It's okay for watching in the garage but
I wouldn't want to rely on it for watching with the family and all.

I have an EyeTV 250+ and the full EyeTV software. The software and
remote work okay. There are things about it I wish were different but
that's more of a stylistic thing.

Another thing is you may need USB 2.0 ports to get good recordings from
a TV device.

And make sure you have plenty of storage. I originally had a 60 Gb
drive in mine and it got filled up a few times. It now as a 320 Gb
drive which hasn't gotten close to being filled up.

Myth TV runs on OS X, but a 450 (even a dual 450) is pretty slow for
this sort of thing.

XBMC? remote?

2009-08-20 Thread PETER WARNER

Hey, Sorry if this has been hashed over before, but I am new to the
GList. I am trying to set up a media center on my G4 dual 450. Does
anyone have recommendations regarding Software (free?) and the
ability to use a remote with it? I happen to have a Pinnacle tv for
mac hd mini stick, and would love to use the remote from that for
this purpose. XBMC has a ppc port, so I am looking at that, but I
wanted to hear about real setups other folks have succeeded (or
failed) with.

I know EyeTV light comes with the pinnacle, but I was not to jazzed
about it when I tried it out. For one thing, I want to be able to
play videos encoded in many different formats, since that is the way
my collection is.

Thanks,
Peter
