Where did you down load the adrift text adventure creation system?
It sounds interesting.

In Top Speed, you hear cars you are lapping, but they don't appear to
occupy the same track you do, as though the sound, but not the
physical object is there. You can't hit or be hit by them, they
don't cause any interference.

I will gladly be your pit crew if you wish.
I have soundforge and audacity on here and my external recorder.
Audacity may be the easier of the 2 programs to do things with and I
have a range of effects.
No vst, but I have ladsper and nyquest.
Loads of tone generators and things.
Its just me getting and reading all the docs I have.
Looks easier.
It does help when I can post links for opensource if I use audacity.
Opensource is really cool.

One of the sole quibbles I have with Playing the Dark's formula 1
game is the lack of effects of lapped traffic. Time and time again
in races I've listened to, lapped traffic plays a role as competing
drivers have to thread their way through it, or use it to draft or
whatever. I hope that Raceway will include this feature.

ya know, I've been trying to find one of those, but there doesn't seem to be

For an amazing video gaming site containing original soundtracks, game art,

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway, news, plans, and updates.

2006-10-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Brandon,
Well, I am hoping to make USA Raceway match up with the current rules
and regs for the Nascar Nextel Cup Series.
One of the new 2004 rules I am definately adding is the leading racer
gets 180 points rather than the 175 as are the current scoring for
Nascar. That will prevent a tie between the leader and runner up.
Also like in Nascar scoring is by the book. You get 5 bonus points for
leading at least one lap, and 5 bonus for the most leads in the entire race.
One thing I definately want to add is the AI drivers can screw up,
crash, etc somewhat. I always hated in games like Pole Position and Pole
Position 2 you ddrove off the track in to the grass or hit the wall, and
here the AI drivers are flying by like noone ever makes mistakes. I
always thought if I could screw up once and a while they should to. Grin.

It is a cool system. Unfortunately I don't know why your screen reader
is not working with it. I'd be happy to help you. I'm currently writing
my two games using Adrift 3.9 and although the manual is in pdf it's
completely accessible to me using Window-Eyes. Also, the creation of
things is equally accessible.

Hi,
I just downloaded the Adrift text adventure creation system. While it
seems to work well with JAWS, I'm still a little confused. I'm attempting to

the entire section when I click on it. Any help would be appreciated. It
seems like a really cool system.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway, news, plans, and updates.

2006-10-08 Thread Christopher Bartlett
My knowledge of programming is out of date, but it would seem to me
that if you write the car AI properly, the number of cars ought to be
only limited by the power of the playing machine, as each AI is just
using the same chunk of code, loaded into n virtual machines or
objects, each of which is polled during a cycle of race time. I
don't see why n+1 cars is more work for you than N cars, except in
the matter of optimizing your code. to deal with the variety of
machines that will be playing this game.

The problem becomes more difficult when you have more than one player
as while the object model should still work (have the player object
inherit most properties from the general car object with additional
routines to handle player input), that input will make optimizing for
smallest memory demand more difficult. This would affect online play
or network play more than solo play.

Ah yes, I've heard the same rumor meself. As to whether or not it actually

it's encouraging.

[Audyssey] BG Boggle ruels

2006-10-08 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Folks,
I just got my copy of BG Boggle and did not know how to play, so I looked up
instructions on the internet.
I think the BG version does not have a time limit and you are just trying to
find as many words as possible, but the rest of the rules apply.
Boggle Rules
from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boggle
Boggle is a word game designed by Allan Turoff
and trademarked by Parker Brothers / Hasbro, Inc.

Rules

Play begins by randomizing a tray of 16 cubical
dice, by shaking. Each has a different letter printed on each of its sides.
The dice settle into a four by four tray such that only the top letter of
each cube is visible. After they have settled into the grid, a three-minute
timer is started and all players simultaneously begin the main phase of
play.

Each player searches for words that can be constructed from sequentially
adjacent letters. Adjacent includes horizontally, vertically, and diagonally
neighboring letters.
Words must be at least three letters long, may include singular and plural
(or other derived forms) separately, but may not use the same letter cube
more than once per word.
The players record all words found by writing on their private sheets of
paper. After three minutes have elapsed, all players must
stop writing and the game enters the scoring phase.

Note that one cube is printed with Q U. This is because
Q is (almost) always followed by U in English words
. If there was a 'Q' in Boggle, it would have to appear next to a 'U' to be
usable. To give players a chance to use the Q more frequently,
Q U is provided
as a single letter tile. However, for the purposes of scoring 'QU' counts as
two letters: squid would score two points (for a five-letter word) but is
formed from a chain of only four cubes.

Each player reads off his or her list of discovered words. If two or more
players wrote the same word, it is discarded from all players' lists. Any
player
may challenge the validity of a word, in which case a previously nominated
dictionary is used to verify or refute the word. For all words remaining
after
duplicates have been eliminated, points are awarded based on the length of
the word. The winner is the player whose point total is highest. Any ties
are
typically broken by count of long words.

The National Scrabble Association
maintains an Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) that is suitable
for Boggle. This dictionary focuses on including all variant forms of all
words, up to eight letters in length. For words with multiple meanings, only
a single meaning is given to support the validity of the word. The OSPD is
now in
its fourth edition (OSPD4), which is widely available in book stores. Since
the third edition, the OSPD has excluded words that are racially offensive.

Word Length- Points
3 letters 1
4 letters 1
5 letters 2
6 letters 3
7 letters 5
8plus letters 11

Strategy

. Given the limited time, it is useful to memorize common sets of
anagrams
. For example, when one spots the word tea, one instantly checks for the
presence of eat, ate, and eta, rather than waiting to stumble across them
later.

. Before writing any words, one should scan the tray for the letter s and
the combinations ed, er, and ing. Being aware of the possibilities often
allows one to find words in groups. For example, the word head can lead to
heads, headed, header, headers, heading, and headings.
. Other useful combinations include ier, est, iest, able, ible, less, ness,
ight, tion, and many others.
. In a game of many players, it is relatively less beneficial to hunt for
common words, because only unique words count. At times two players with
long lists of common words will wipe each other out, handing the victory to
a third player with a short list of unusual words.

Trivia
. Using the sixteen cubes in a standard Boggle set, the list of longest
words that can be formed includes Inconsequentially, Quadricentennials, and
Sesquicentennials, all seventeen letter words made possible by Q and U
appearing on the same face of one cube.

Re: [Audyssey] Icons in sryth?

Ah yes, but from what I hear, the Nightsong armor will soon be available to
every subscriber. I hear he plans on rereleasing all the old proving grounds
as standard adventures. I think people will really enjoy that.

Re: [Audyssey] Icons in sryth?

2006-10-08 Thread Brandon Cole
Hi there,
Icons can only be fixed to certain weapons that you can only get from the
nevernal realm of Kyul Thainer. Unfortunately, none of the imbuable weapons
you can buy right now are very good. Hahaa. Still, Kyul Thainer is
unfinished, and there are always possibilities of addition in Sryth. Oh, and
I don't believe icons can be removed once they've been fixed to a weapon.

2006-10-08 Thread Brandon Cole
Wow. In some ways he keeps getting nicer and nicer, and in others, mostly
ways that you won't know about until you try certain things in the game, he
gets meaner. Sryth is becoming a lot harder for the new arrivals, and that's
a shame. For instance, have you seen th price of blessings of protection? Or
the Hail Blade? Yeah. Perfect examples right there.

Number 45 is turning in for a pit stop. You get the idea.

Well, like I said I might just tell the function to save car43 to
saved.rw, and it will save it and all it's related data including
location, damage, state of the fuel, tires, etc...

Yeah, and of course you might have at least one lap of yellow flag
conditions after the red flag condition for all cars to get back in to
the race. Although, I believe the rule is three laps in Nascar.

Yeah, makes sense. Keeps the player from plowing in to a wall or another
car when starting up.

last comments about number of race cars. When I was able to play NASCAR how
they handle the visuals and sound effects was by letting the gamer select
from a combo box the number of cars that they could see in fromt of them or
in the review mirror..

Oh I see what you are getting at. That I can do. Basicly, in our case how many
AI engines you can hear. I think James was planning something like this from
what I saw in the rw source.
He seamed to be working on a feature that would limit how many cars you could
here at any one time in the game. Sounds like what you are saying.

For sounds it had to do with turning on or the announcer and the number of
motors you want to hear. This number was never higher then four. Which
would be pretty realistic...

Yeah, and I can do that. For the other cars a simple pass effect would be fine
for when they pass you, or you pass them, but as far as engine noises just the
four cars nearist the player.

 At the most
times I would hear three other motors and mine own. Since this will be a
audio game, I wold say four motor sounds would do the job.

I agree. Four should do the job nicely for realistic effect.

Winning races is not won by the fastest car, but the driver who can
get to 500 miles the quickest.

Exactly. That is how Raceway is going to be played.

So, finally, the number of cars in a race should not be the problem, since
all the cars will not need sound effects, just those that are close to you.

I see where you are coming from. However, wow you want me to really work like
heck on this game. That means I have to come up with an AI system that will
support 42 indipendant cars. That sucks, and don't expect this game until 2020
or so. Just teasing.
Actually, though it will be more difficult for me to program that many cars. I
may not do the full 43 cars in the first reason do to the nature loads of
people want this game, and it has been shelved for most of it's development
cycle. I am hoping for something by next year.

Re: [Audyssey] New Raceway Trailor Released.

2006-10-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Sarah,
Actually, there were a couple of right turns. There was one about the
middle of the demo where I came out of a curve and wanted to line up
center with the road. There was one at the end were I crashed the car on
purpose to end the demo.
As for turning notifications etc that will be coming. Not sure when, but
I have found someone who has the original sounds for Raceway, and it is
a matter of having them send me the *.esp file.
Once that is done I can work with including that stuff in to my version
of Raceway. In the original ESP version James North would tell you left
turn ahead, right turn ahead, approaching the wall, etc and I am hoping
to put that stuff back in to the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Icons in sryth?

2006-10-08 Thread Bryan Peterson
Hi,
Icons can only be affixed to special weapons. These can be bought in the
realm of Kyul-Thanor. If you haven't already been there, you need to explore
Talinus and type Penekarn Lane into the edit box that asks for where you
want to go. That's P E N E K A R N. Stroll along the lane. The first time
you do this you'll meet a beggar offering to sell you a magical item, but
it's extremely expensive. Whether you choose to go with him or not, stroll
along Penekarn Lane again and you'll see a man entering a door at the end of
an alley. Follow him and investigate. After that scene you'll be able to
travel to Kyul-Thanor. The Imbuable weapons can be bought from a pair of
brothers who operate a forge in the wilderness. I personally don't like this
new system. None of the icons are better than the armor and weapons I
already have, so I store the icons in my tower in Trithik. If I remember
right, once you buy an Imbuable weapon, you select it from your Inventory
and use it. Then you can affix an icon or two or three to it. As I said
though, I've never found much use for them. It doesn't come close to beating
the Giantfell Blde and the Nightsong armor. The Nightsong Amrmor isn't
available in he normal game in case you're wondering. It was the prize in
the last Proving Grounds contest. The Giantfell Blade is found in the Giants
adventure in Hawklor, but you don't want to attempt that one until you have
a fairly hi Melee Rating.

It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway, news, plans, and updates.

2006-10-08 Thread Gary Whittington
Ok a few comments.

For having wav sound names why not go with general terms like "buddy", "pal"
etch for the pit chief and for the track announcer just go with the number
of the car.

This way a gamer can still have a unique name in the reports like the
standings and race results. Also it will leave you open to sometime to make
the game more flexible if Raceway becomes a online head to head game.

Red Flag conditions: Indexing, Awh, very good. Lots of things will need to
be saved not only with the player condition, like tiries, gas, spoiler, and
any damage to the car, but the rest of the field. So, glad to hear that its
a matter of plugging in the info of what needs to be saved. ON returning
from a red Flag, I see two reasons that may be inputted in the race summary.
Weather conditions or debris, as well as oil on the track.

In the game summary could show that no time or laps was lost, since this was
a player stoppage. In case of a game Red Flag for the same reason aboce,
then the numbers of laps and time can be outputted. This could be a good
way for the game to also review things be fore resuming the race as well, if
the race summary pops up be fore restarting. IN fact this window may also
have some info about the gamers own condition and stats, like where on the
track and amount of fuel. I found with racing game that this would be a
nice feature be jumping right back in the race. This would mean if not
having this players stats, would mean while the player is relizing where he
is and his car's condition, may put them in to the wall or another car in
the pits.

When the gamer is back in the saddle, I would start the game back at a
speed of say 10%. This would be cuting down the speed from 200 to 20mph on
super speed ways It would be as though standing standing still on these
track. smaller track the MPH is gong to be smaller and it would be close t
staindg still, but at least no sharp turns will be right in fromt of them.
When I still have sight and playing NasCAR 9X, even with my poor vision I
would find myself in troble, by trying to find out everything that is gong
on.
The 10%, would a nice feature, and the spped could start climbing in
segments. Since this would be a game speed the adjustment to the time
elapsed for that current lap wold not need any. In effect, the cars are
still moving 200MPH, its just the game is slow and then speeded back up to
its normal speed. Smiles, its not fair to the gamer to be dropped into a
speeding bullet.

last comments about number of race cars. When I was able to play NASCAR how
they handle the visuals and sound effects was by letting the gamer select
from a combo box the number of cars that they could see in fromt of them or
in the review mirror.. They also a setting for the details of the cars from
(high) where you could see the decal on the cars to (low) showing the cars
as basisly block on wheels. This went as far as to the envirment as well.
>From skid marks on the track to the crowd.

For sounds it had to do with turning on or the announcer and the number of
motors you want to hear. This number was never higher then four. Which
would be pretty realistic AS I haved played the game with the graphical
mode set to a low setting for a computer that had average memory back then
and then was able to max the sould out with out any problems. At the most
times I would hear three other motors and mine own. Since this will be a
audio game, I wold say four motor sounds wold do the job. In a case where
your car is boxed in, and of course if using a sound system say surround
sound the game then would hear motors all around him. This was another
option in the NASCAR options of the sound schema. This cold be something as
well to have in Raceway, for gamers may not have a real fst computer and
standard memory. So, when I got NASCAR tweeked for best performance on my
computer, I was able then to tweek my race car during practice much better.
Which is the most import thing in NASCAR and hoping that RaceWay will follow
suit. Winning races is not won by the fastest car, but the driver who can
get to 500 miles the quickest.

So, finally, the number of cars in a race should not be the problem, since
all the cars will not need sound effects, just those that are close to you.
Hears what soulds I suspect you would included.
Your car.
Car in front
Car in front that you are bumper to bumper to
Car behind
Car right on your rear bumper.
Car to your side who is traveling about the same speed as you.
Car to your side who is either being passed or paasing you quickly.
Then using fades, Doppler effects and volume levels to indicate other cars
postion and speed to you.
In the Pits as I remember the only sound is your motor and smoking of ones
tiries, but doing this could cause you a lost of a lap nowadays, since there
is now spped limits around the pits.

Well, thats it. in fact some thing I mentioned bri

[Audyssey] Life, The AGRIP Project and Everything

2006-10-08 Thread Matthew T. Atkinson
Hello all,

For those of you that are not on the AGRIP lists and may not know me, I
am the lead developer of AudioQuake and a research student in the area
of computer and game accessibility. I am writing to tell you about some
recent events that have affected the AGRIP project and my work -- though
this email, being sent to gaming lists, is primarily about the AGRIP
project, which is overseen by myself and Sabahattin ``Sebby'' Gucukoglu.
My hope is that community feedback will once again help us decide where
we should be going next.

On the 23rd of August, I was hit by a car whilst on a pedestrian
crossing on the way home from work. Since then, I have been in hospital
for a month, then at home with my parents for a few weeks. Very
fortunately, it is expected that I will be able to walk again (though
not for a few months) and I did not sustain any head injuries.

I'm on the way to being back online now. I'm returning to university
tomorrow, to start getting back into my studies. I've been lucky to get
hold of a wheelchair-accessible room in hall that I can stay in until I
can walk again. This will take some time. So will catching up with my
research work.

I am not sure where that leaves us at the moment. I am very keen to do
all the things I mentioned that we were planning for the AGRIP project
just a few weeks before my accident. However, I have no idea of when
I'll be able to get back into active development of AudioQuake, at the
rate that such plans would require, as my research schedule has now been
blown out of the water. It may take months to get back to where I was.

This creates a dilemma -- I always wanted (and still do want) AGRIP to
become an application of the core research I'm working on right now and
that requires that we have an active community of users. But if I'm
unable to do the development work to support such users right now, what
will happen? I don't want to see people leave due to lack of
improvements. But at the same time, I can't personally make those
improvements right now.

So, I propose that instead of me doing all the development work from now
on, I will work only on providing the community with a completed set of
documentation on how to do the development themselves. I will finish
the manuals that tell you how to get, build and edit the code -- that's
the gamecode and the engine, so you can make modifications to either and
create new games from what AudioQuake now is. I will also try to give
information on how the statistics collection works (maybe I can finish
the update of the stats site too, if things go well, but I'm not sure
right now).

Thanks very much for your input on the survey we carried out recently
before my accident. I will publish the results as soon as I can; I hope
you now appreciate why there has been such a delay in doing this.

The survey told me that people do want to see some things changed, and a
lot of you want to make changes yourselves. Level editing was a big
part of this, and I fully intend to continue work on that when I can.
But for now, I think the best I can do is give you all the information
and help you require to make code-based changes (game mods and engine
mods). There are some very talented people in the AGRIP community
who're learning the hard way and I feel I should concentrate on
providing the documentation to make that an easier learning curve for
all of you, now that these people (Cara Quinn being the name that leaps
off the top of my head, along with Derek London) have forged the way.

I would like to know what people in the community think of this -- it
seems to me that this is the only way I can allow the project to evolve,
as I simply can't afford the time right now to actively develop it
myself (certainly not between all the catch-up I have to do, and the
physio, etc).

If people are interested in developing their own modifications or even
versions of the game, then please let me know and I'll do my best to
finish the manuals that will give you all the information on how to do
it. For your reference, the current one (not entirely complete) can be
found at http://docs.agrip.org.uk/ .

Thanks for your time in listening to this. I look forward to becoming
as involved as I once was in the Accessible Gaming community again in
the not-too-distant future :-).

best regards,

Re: [Audyssey] Web-Based Games

2006-10-08 Thread Lora
Thanks. I ended up playing for a few hours last night, and I think I'm
hooked. I can't recall very many games that allowed us to play in quite
this fashion that offer everything this game does.

It says $9.95 on the Web page, but I think I'd pay either amount.

And I haven't run into anything that JAWS can't handle, either, including
combat.

Thanks again.

Well actually, unless he lowered the price, it's actually $20 a year, and
even that's worth it. You can play portions of the game without paying, but
there are too many benefits to becoming an adventurer's guild subscriber.
Bonus experience, items you can't obtain without subscribing, quests you
can't go on without subscribing, and there are a lot of those, places you
can't even visit without subscribing, access to pregenerated characters if
you don't want to roll your own, and finally, access to the Proving Grounds,
which is a special competitive set of adventures put out every couple months
or so. The Proving Grounds adventures take the form of a story just like all
the others, but you're scored and rewarded based on how well you do compared
to other players. So again I say that it is definitely worth it. Enjoy, and
if you ever need any help, just let me know.
