Subject: [Audyssey] USA Games and SAPI support?

 Hi everyone,
I'm more or less throwing this one out here for some end user feedback
as I need it at this point.
As many of you know STFC 1.0 and Montezuma's Revenge Alpha 4.4 are using
prerecorded wav files for speech playback. The problem with this method
is generally that It takes me lots of extra time to sample, record,
trim, and edit every voice file for the game. In STFC I think there are
a total of 400 wav files I had to do which took me something like three
weeks to do. With the end result being massive over head.
Needless to say using prerecorded speech has added allot of extra time
to every production, added CPU over head, and at the end of the day I
have to put in lots of special flags to get it to act something like a
synth doing key interrupts etc so that the speech wouldn't hold up the
 application, etc...
On the positive side though the voice, speech output, is generally
better than most synths. I have the option to correct the way the synth
says something which helps. For example Cardassian which might sound
like car-dashen can be respelled during recorded to say car-dass-e-an.
However, I am not sure the improved speech is all that worth it.
What I would like to do is build a speech class into my engine.dll which
should support all Sapi 5 synths, and through a good Sapi tts engine
you could gain self voicing that way, and not have to wait an extra
month or so as I edit voice samples to use for the game.
The advantages here is less overhead, more rapid production time for
games, smaller downloads, custom speech settings, and allot of other
stuff you don't get with prerecorded speech.
Since I was working on my screen reading project i realized how much
faster it is when you can just do something like
 synth.Speak(message, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault);
and on to the next line of code without having to actually record the
message, load and then play back a wave file. Which eats CPU power, not
to mention lots more of my time to do the wav self-voicing option.
The only thing I need to do with Sapi is construct a string of text,
store it in the message string, and pass it to the synth.Speak method,
 and away I go.
Another reason to go Sapi is there are allot of high quality speech
engines out there that can be generically ssupported. The scansoft
voices which ship with Jaws 8 are simply awesome. Since I have installed
them I have no problems with using them with LW and Jim Kitchen's games,
and they sound good for synths. The catch 22 is I don't know how many
you have purchased the higher quality synths, and how many of you are
using the older Microsoft ones Mike, Mary, Microsoft, etc which sound,
 well, terrible.
So what do you as end users think? Should I go ahead and make Sapi a
 core part of future releases?

 Hello Tom.

currently, I'm being forced to use Ms sam in games. Even though I use the
orphius voice Alan with Hal, for some odd reason I have severe trouble
trying to make any alterations to Sapi, - either using the Orphius
 Sapi
runtime libraries, or trying to install the other Ms voices (though I am
looking into buying Realspeak Daniel soon, which will hopefully work).

The point is that at the moment, I'm not experiencing the best in synth
voice quality when it comes to games.

I find though, i can generally cope with Ms Sam as long as the information
I'm getting is of a fairly general nature, such as reading numbers or
 other
 status information.

I do find however, that a game (or indeed a text), loses a lot of it's
atmospheric content when dialogue or other speeches requiring emotion or
characterization are read in an emotionless synthetic voice, and
 obviously
the worse the voice, the worse the problem, though for in game character
speech, even something like Realspeak would be inadequate Imho.

I know that Phil got Sarah voice acted just for this reason.

To give an example, I have no problem with most of the Sapi used in Lone
wolf, even with ms Sam, however in the next version it might improve
the atmosphere of the game considerably if a few phrases, supposedly
 spoken
by the sub's crew, were actually recorded in Wav. these could include
torpedo's away! she's hit! (obviously having the crew speak the names
 of
enemy craft wouldn't be practical), and the various damage reports.

I can appreciate the difficulties in recording many wavs, and also that
would make things more difficult for people with slower internet
 connections
to download the game, however on the other hand, I do feel that the use of
synth voices for characterization in games can be extremely harmful to the
game' atmosphere, and (where applicable), how believeable those characters
 are.

so for Monti, I'd personally go for having your health, score, current
 level
and other status info spoken buy Sapi, but if ever panama Jo (or whoever
we've got starring in the game at the moment), has to do any talking, have
it recorded by a real live voice actor.

I will admit, as somebody who does fairly major stuff on stage, I am
probably fairly exacting as far as the acting side of gaming goes.

Btw, If the character's in the game are robots, as in Galaxy ranger, I
 think
a synth voice can actually fit in rather well. It's actually been done in
various films and Tv series I think, Tron, Space above and beyond and war
 games for example.

Well that's my thoughts on the subject, though everyone else's might be
 different.

 All the best

 Dark.

Hi Richard,

May I ask, do you get that error as soon as the game starts or right after the
kickoff?

If it is as soon as the game starts it might be that something is missing such
as DirectX 8.1 or better. Or maybe the VB6 run time libraries that would get
installed with the winkit.zip install.

If it is after the kickoff, I am not sure why some people get that error and
others do not. You could try deleting the footplay.txt file or run the

[Audyssey] Quest 4.01 - improved screen-reader support

2007-03-09 Thread Alex Warren
Hi

I have just released Quest 4.01, a system for creating and playing text
adventure games. You can download it now from http://www.axeuk.com/quest.

In this release I have made some improvements to the support for JAWS and
Window-Eyes, following the feedback I received from this mailing list. Quest
now automatically speaks its text via the screen-reader, instead of SAPI.

This release also includes a few games from the new Quest games website
www.textadventures.co.uk. You can download more games from the site. (The
site includes a play online feature, though this doesn't work at all well
with screen-readers - JAWS doesn't spot the text being written to the
Internet Explorer window. If anyone has any ideas how this could be fixed,
please let me know! Until then I recommend using the Quest software to play
the games)

Thanks

just thought it was a monster, but it's apparently a time rip.

 Hi Kim,
On level 9 in v1.2 The level is packed with loads of monsters such as
machine gun wielding mutant humans, laser pistal wielding cyborgs,
mutant dogs, etc and they all seam to attack you almost all at once. If
you can't cutt them down quickly you are ground up like hamburger.
Just some FYI. I find using the automatic bolt gun helps in this regard
as you can just hold down the fire key and strafe the room killing or
 wounding several monsters at once.
Either that or don't be afraid to make use of grenades and mines which
will help reduce their numbers inlevel 9.

Hiya,
I can actually play it, yes, believe it or not. The trick is to have fast
reflexes, for the most part, and to be able to memorize tactics and tricks.
The most annoying aspect would have to be some of the most difficult
creatures, but even they're not unbeatable.
Have fun,

Man, if you want a challenging plot, play Icesus mud--lots of quests
 there
are really challenging if you know where to find them.

I'm personally not a quester myself. What I'd like to have, is a
 combat
system that doesn't have descriptions like:
you scratch it for 1 damage!

I mean, I'd like if possible bloody deadly descriptions especially
 death
blows. But, I'm not into games especially online multiplayer ones,
 with
endings. It should be persistent. I mean, I don't know I just don't
 like
playing games over again, no matter how powerful I get. Now if each

 be

 challenges would be issued, etc.

2007-03-09 Thread Zachary Kline
Welp, combat is hard at first. Complicated because it's fast-paced, and not
automatic. Admittedly, GW2 does have problems: it's not at all RP-oriented,
mostly intentionally. It's a PK mud.
All that said, though, there are times when it can feel mighty good to cause
bloody carnage.
Cheers,
Zack.

 Hi Richard,

May I ask, do you get that error as soon as the game starts or right after
 the kickoff?

If it is as soon as the game starts it might be that something is missing
such as DirectX 8.1 or better. Or maybe the VB6 run time libraries that
would get installed with the winkit.zip install.

If it is after the kickoff, I am not sure why some people get that error
and others do not. You could try deleting the footplay.txt file or run
the uninfoot.bat file and install the game again.

Before the initial release of the game, when it was still being worked on by
ESP Softworks, the table editor was one of the selling points. It was
decided, when Adora Entertainment bought the rites to the ESP Softworks
games, that it would still be an eventual part of the game, and that
decision, as of the last I heard, is still the way it will be. The staff at

will know for sure.

Re: [Audyssey] american football games

2007-03-09 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Jason,
That DOS game was Any Night Football from PCS games written by Carl Mickla.
It was a text only game that was similar to Jim Kitchen's game in that you
played the coach of an American Football team.
It did include the real stats to the teams at that time so the better team
had an advantage to a lesser team.
We were planning a more advanced version in 1999 with player's stats but
stopped work on it when we realized it would take more than a year of work
to add all the stats.
Then people started releasing games for Windows and Carl went off to work
for IBM and stopped working on games.
Phil

Re: [Audyssey] A problem with Jim Kitchens Football game.

2007-03-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Richard,

That sounds like it might be a problem with a sapi voice. Like Microsoft Mary,
Mike or Sam might have gone bad. You might want to try running the
DelUserLex.exe file from my site, the GW Micro site or the Freedom Scientific
site.

It is a weird file in that it doesn't appear to do anything. I E it doesn't
say anything or make any noise or anything, but it did repair my Microsoft
sapi5 voices.

I can't really say. I have spoken with him and generally it only takes a
couple of days, but his spam filter has been known to intercept messages so
sometimes he doesn't even know you wrote him. I'd say a week, maybe a little
longer.

Hey guys. I referred someone and I received an automated message from the
sryth gm asking me what char I wanted the tokens I got for my referal
added to. I replied and it's been almost a week since I got his e-mail. I
remember reading a post earlier about how it takes him a while to respond
so I'm not too worried, but what's the longest I should wait before
contacting him again, based on anyone whose spoken with him's experience.
Very poorly written, must go sleep now.

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games and SAPI support?

2007-03-09 Thread Richard Sherman
Hi Thom,
Here is my suggestions. I don't have all of the voices mentioned so this
is where I am coming from.

Do what ever is easiest for you while still producing a great quality game
that you are willing to put your name on. If this means making the voices
with SAPI then so be it. One possibility is to use SAPI for the voices in
the first released version at maybe a lower cost to the consumer. Then as
bugs and the such come in you could then change the voice to wav file types
and release it as an updated version which might cost a few dollars more due
to the time in adding the extra features.

If you decide to make the voices of a higher quality and it takes longer
most consumers would certainly understand. Either way you go I am pretty
sure that it will be a great game to play.

1.2 is free man.
You just download and install.
Its worth the free download, you may have to submit for a replacement which
is free by the way.
Its worth it, you get a proper ending and grenades.
At 02:42 10/03/07, you wrote:
Wow! My favorite weapon is the automatic bolt gun. I currently don't have

just thought it was a monster, but it's apparently a time rip.

  Hi Kim,
On level 9 in v1.2 The level is packed with loads of monsters such as
machine gun wielding mutant humans, laser pistal wielding cyborgs,
mutant dogs, etc and they all seam to attack you almost all at once. If
you can't cutt them down quickly you are ground up like hamburger.
Just some FYI. I find using the automatic bolt gun helps in this regard
as you can just hold down the fire key and strafe the room killing or
  wounding several monsters at once.
Either that or don't be afraid to make use of grenades and mines which
will help reduce their numbers inlevel 9.
