Hi Lindsay, Unfortunately free voices are very bad compared with the ones you buy. However $25 to $35 per voice should not be too much for most people. I buy my voices from NextUp. If you do have Jaws you should have gotten a CD of SAPI voices that were included in Jaws 8 or 9. Re: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games
Hi Che, I think you can acomplish this by simply creating a text area on your Windows form and placing text into it. Then the Jaws or Window Eyes user could review the text with his/her braille display. I assume then here with you not being a braille user yourself you would aim for grade one braille support. That is Everything would be spelled out letter for letter, word for word, without any braille contractions. If you want contractions then one of us would have to translate the words into grade 2 contracted braille. For example King of Hearts would look like K+ ( Hets in grade 2 braille. Re: [Audyssey] Sapi voices for games
Hi Lindsay, To be perfectly honest there aren't any free Sapi voices that sound very good. There are plenty of free voices such as ESpeak, the Microsoft Sapi voices, etc but they are very low quality speech wise. However, if you are willing to pay around $30 USD you can get some pretty decent ssounding voices. The Cepstral voices at http://www.cepstral.com aren't bad and cost about $30 each. There are also many good voices at http://www.nextup.com which cost between $25 and $35 and are also ok. If you buy Text Alloud from Nextup you can get ATT Crystal and Mike for an extra $25 which is a deal there. In addition if you purchase Openbook 8 or Jaws 9 or 10 you will get some of the Scansoft voices which aren't bad either. Lindsay Cowell wrote: Hi folks, I hate the sapi voices that come with vista. Re: [Audyssey] GMA Games unresponsive to licence requests
Hi chaps, Yep, I can apreciate the work/life balancing act that goes on having spent a few years as part of a 3 piece music production team. Don't worry, I wasn't bashing David for this or suggesting I'd been ripped off etc, just wanted to know if this was a typical time delay for GMA so that I could choose which machine to install a game onto more wisely next time I buy a title. Since everyone's saying he's usually pretty quick, I'll put this down to whatever the opposite of beginners luck is lol. If I could just get past mission 5 of GTC there'd be no need for it on the laptop at all. Those friendly tanks drive as if they're popping to the shops to pick up some milk on a lazy Sunday, not like they're unarmed and in a war zone! I've found myself hollering Moove at the computer more than once today hehe. Re: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games
The text can be spelled out letter by letter. The braille display can then be set to display in contracted braille, or at least, some of them can. HTH. --- If guns cause crime, pencils cause misspelled words. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Che c...@blindadrenaline.com; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 10:56 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games Hi Che, I think you can acomplish this by simply creating a text area on your Windows form and placing text into it. Che wrote: Hi all, I am almost done with my online card games hearts and hold em poker. I am wanting to include braille output for those dependant on braille displays. Both games can currently use jaws as the speech engine as well as sapi, so it seems it wouldn't be too hard to convert the output to work with braille. I cannot read braille myself, but if anyone is on list that can either test the games with a braille display or let me know where I can get more info on making jaws play nice with braille displays, I'd really appreciate it. And before anyone says it isn't worth the time due to the few folks playing games with braille, sometimes you just got to do the right thing and put yourself in another persons shoes. I know if I were deaf and blind, I would very much appreciate having access to entertainment like this. If it helps only one person take their mind off their troubles for a little hwile, it is well worth it. Just was wondering if anyone could make a blind friendly version of the old favorite Oregon Trails? This would be a great on line role playing game. It also would be a cool game with sound effects for all of the actions that accure within the game as well. I have to agree, this would make a rather entertaining game. I used to play this with some friends back in highschool, it sounded fun, managing your wagon train, hunting for food, trying to get everyone along the trail before they all died, hehe. I know Freedom Games was going to do an accessible version of this, but that company appears to have died once again, last time I checked anyway. I loved the Oregon trail game and I would love to have an accessible version. the new pc versions for the sighted are so cool now. They are so much more in depth and have audio and talking and so much more sound. lol I loved the old one though but really wwish I could play the new one. It is nastalgic. I remember playing with friends in school. Having to hunt, travel and not get sick or bit by a snake. lol and since I now live in Oregon it has even more meaning. lol Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Re: [Audyssey] what's involved in making a game?
Hi Stephen, Quote When making Mota, what was the very first thing you did? End quote I am afraid I'm not sure of what exactly you are asking. At face value to answer your question I started up Visual C# 2005, now Visual C# 2008, and created a new project folder, project build settings, etc for the MOTA project. The usual boring stuff anyone does when preparing to write a new program from scratch using Visual C#. Quote also, you know how the game uses an .exe file to run? well, what was the .exe file before it was compiled? End quote It is in a form we call source code. Simply put text files with hundreds, usually thousands, of programming specific commands that tell the program how to operate. There are several different programming languages C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Visual Basic, etc. Instead of a standard *.txt extention source files have an extention that is specific to the language. For example, C program source files have a *.C extention, Java source files have a *.java extention, C# source files have a *.cs extention, Visual Basic 2002 and above have a *.vb extention, etc. Anyway, what a compiler does is it takes all of your source files, text files with code in them, and compiles them into a *.exe file. At least usually. Not to confuse you but some languages such as tcl, Perl, and python are what we call runtime languages. That is a script style program that is started by running another program. For example, python hello.py would tell python to start my hello world program contained in hello.py. There are compilers for perl and python to make triditional *.exe programs, but the majority of perl/python programs are just source files that are started by running perl.exe or python.exe via the commandline. Then, there are your database programs like Orical, Mysql, Postgresql, that don't fall in either catagory. Basically, you speak to the database engine using a programming language known as sql and it carries out your instructions. Needless to say programming a database by hand is boring as watching paint dry and not worth talking about here. Though, most developers create some kind of front end program in Java, perl, php, python, C#, whatever that does all the complex work.
