Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
I must confess, for all workings with hal I'm a big fan of Orphius' human voices. Fast response time pluss a convincing British English accent. For Sapi stuff I do like realspeak daniel, but it's response time is far too slow for me to use it with Hal. This hasn't always been the case of course. Back in the earlier versions of orphius only the synthetic voices were available and hal sounded a lot like a dalek, which was one reason I tried out win vision and deck talk. Then, Orphius shipped with the more human voices Alan and Carol and I got to be a fan. The only slight irritation is that for some odd reason Dolphins' stopped shipping Hal with the more human orphius voices and now only ships it with the synthetic ones. When I asked they said most people used the synthetic ones, which I found rather odd. Luckily orphius' more human voices are offered as free downloads by Dolphin anyway. I have heard a rumour that the company who make orphius split from dolphin and are now bust, in fact I've been trying to find the latest version of orphius online and not having any luck at all. At least though Dolphin will continue to ship Hal with the currently latest version. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] bowling
Hi Michael, I sent answers to some of your questions directly to your email address and they all were bounced as undeliverable. Although I did a bowling game for DOS, Draconis did the Ten Pin Alley game based on some of my ideas and sound effects. They would be the one to make changes in it. I wish there was on-line play for example. We have a list of over a hundred first names in the registered version but the game allows you to add a recording of your own first name if it isn't in the list. The instructions are a little bit technical as you need to change a text file, record your voice and save it as a specific number then fine your name at the end of the list. I have the exact details somewhere if anyone wants to do this. We made the game so it is very easy on the easiest level and very difficult on the hardest level, plus there is a handicapping between two unmatched players after you have both played at least three full games. Draconis did a fine job recreating the sounds of a bowling alley and they also added humor to the game. spoiler space Instead of bowling just sit back and listen to the announcer as he gets board and goes to the bathroom and eventually falls asleep. Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
Well, that does happen in this country as well sadly. I'm not sure why my secondary school began with hal, - maybe things were different in the early 90's, pluss my brother already had a very good relationship with dolphin anyway and was a major fan of luna as a magnifyer. After some experimentation, I did try win vision briefly at one point, which was able to give amazingly fast response with decktalk thanks to a hardware synthesisor box, - which proceeded to break down completely within six months of me using it, at which point I was given a copy of supernova to be going on with, and it actually turned out the stuff which had attracted me to trying win vision in the first place was quite doable with a more up to date version of Hal than the one I'd been used to previously. I did experiment with jaws for a few days on a computer at a society for the blind in Nottingham, more for interest sake than anything else. The profound difficulty in changing basic settings such as reading of capitals I found quite irritating. At the time I believed this was because I was unfamiliar with Jaws, now though i actually wonder if it's just that (as Tom has said), jaws doesn't really make altering settings too easy anyway. Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
Actually Bryan, having to put a screen reader to sleep while running games or other programs would down right annoy me. When writing up material for audiogames.net I quite commonly load up a game to check basic info such as keys or main menue options and flick out of the game to write stuff down, then flick back. I also do this frequently when error reporting or testing as well, or indeed when I just feel the need to check my mail and am too lazy to stop playing, say, in the middle of a long entombed game (which obviously I run with sapi). Maybe I've just become too used to the option, but not having it there would be a major pest. Beware the grue! well one reason I still like hal for games is you can turn the voice and hotkeys off. the reader is still loaded but its not doing any intercepts. doesn't mean it could crash but it does mean when you are done you can switch it back in. trouble is its easy to forget. I still use hal though mine is grosly out dated now. I have not seen any reason to switch though even though I could if i cared to have the guts its the same with win xp apart from the security aspects I will have to spend loads of cash to upgrade hal and jaws and with jaws looks I'd need to pay more to get vpc mode. So all in all not upgrading to something I don't need including any ie over 6 is something I doubt I'd bother with. secure yes but clutter when I don't need it. Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
It's interesting all the good stuff thae Tom and Bryan have listed about Window eyes also applies to Hal, even the tech support business and ability to use Sapi synths as speech output. I even stil use orphius for the same reason That Bryan uses eloquence, the response time is so fast, in fact it's the only synth I've seen that can keep up with my usual typing speed even set on word echo. I do rather wonder if Jaws's idio syncracies, inability to flick streight off, keyboard shinanigans etc are the exception, rather than the rule. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
Hi, No, it is just simply the fact ever since shipping Eloquence with Jaws they automatically assume that is what all of their customers will use or want to use. Plus for them to purchase the Phonix Dectalk 5 SDK and then write a Jaws driver for it would cost them money, and they don't want to do it. So they suggested Eloquence instead. Which, like I said, totally missed my point I don't very much like Eloquence and want the speed and reliability of Dectalk. Window-Eyes on the other hand ships with the Dectalk software out of the box, and one very huge reason I switched over to them around the 4.0 days. I've always been a fan of the Dectalk products, and when Window Eyes made it the default synth I switched. I only keep Jaws around for odd jobs and things where Window-eyes support could be a little better. Otherwise I have no need of the shark. Smile. On 4/21/10, Muhammed Deniz wrote: > I like jaws. Yeah. And I bet if you asked them to help you configure a game you were developing to work with JAWS their response would be the same. "JAWS wasn't meant to be used to play games!" or somesuch nonsense. I'll freely admit I use Eloquence more than the other voices I have but only because it has the highest response rate of any synthe I've ever used. I wouldn't bother with it at all but for that. And I absolutely refuse to use it in audio games if I can help it. Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
Hi Bryan, Oh, don't get me started on Freedom Scientific tech support. Those guys are idiots. They have an extremely narrow view of the world that's for sure. I remember calling them about wanting to support the Dectalk 5 Software produced by Phonix. They are like, "Why do you want to do that? Everybody uses Eloquence. There is no need to support the Dectalk software. I suggest you use Eloquence instead." It seams whoever answered my call has a massive shortage of brain power. Perhaps I wanted to use the Dectalk software because I like it, because contrary to his view not everybody likes Eloquence, and not everyone with half a brain wants to use it. It is very insulting to call up a tech support person and be told that the company sees my request as not worth their time. Then, to suggest that maybe I should use Eloquence instead because everybody else uses it. That's totally missing the point of my call. So I'm sure if I called them about Neospeech Kate or Paul their response wouldn't be too much different. They seriously have a bad attitude about their customers wants, needs, and opinions. So Jaws isn't worth my time, and several others. That is one reason I went to Window-Eyes several years back. Smile. Well obviously, the quality if your computer doesn't have anything to do with what screen reader your using at all. I first learnt It skills and typing on an absolutely horrible old monster of a thing running windows 3.1 with a copy of Hal version 3 on it. That machine locked up every session and had no harddrive space whatsoever, and that was in 1995, however it was deffinately the machine that was off, and when I switched to using a better quality laptop problems didn't come up at all. I use to use hal back in when I was 9 or 8 maybe 7 or 6. But thank goodness I could use this win 7 dude now. I think it had something like msn messenger but I thought it was saying well when I was very small and when I turned it off, zoice off instead of voice off. See with Window-Eyes you don't even have to do that much, unless a keystroke in the game would conflict with a Window-Eyes keystroke. And it's easy to modify hotkeys so they don't interfere. Well that's a matter of personal opinion. I happen to not like JAWS because of how it monopolizes the keyboard, not to mention a whole host of other issues I could spend all day listing if I so chose but won't. I just happen to like how you can if necessarily leave Window-Eyes running while playing a game and not have it interfere with it. It can still be running when a game is in progress because it doesn't monopolize the keyboard the way JFW does. And you don't even have to modify either the game or the screen reader for this to work the way you often do with JAWS. I used to unload my screen reader out of habit even after switching to WE. Then one afternoon I went to play a game of Classic Pipe and for whatever reason I forgot to unload Window-Eyes. I wasn't even aware of this until after I'd quit the game. Window-Eyes neither spoke nor caused any key conflicts. If I'd tried that with JAWS I'd have been lucky to pass the first level. And if someone messages me I can switch over and reply without disrupting the game, not that I make a habit of that. You could also turn off hal by pressing the control and the 0 key. I haven't used hal for a while, because that was on my brothers win 98 desktop but no one uses that desktop anymore. That's why jaws is good, because you could do anything you want. I use to use hal back in when I was 9 or 8 maybe 7 or 6. But thank goodness I could use this win 7 dude now. I think it had something like msn messenger but I thought it was saying well when I was very small and when I turned it off, zoice off instead of voice off. I must really say I hate hal and that windows 98 computer because it was freezing every 5 minutes. Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing
Jaws is cool! -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Bryan Peterson Sent: 21 April 2010 05:03 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing That's one thing I like about Window-Eyes. And if someone messages me I can switch over and reply without disrupting the game, not that I make a habit of that. fwiw, I might take care of the talking. - Original Message - From: "dark" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 8:44 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] two things The ful version of haunted factory was available only by special download, so it's not even around anymore, I stil have a copy but haven't played it for a long time sinse it conflicts with Avg, also I'd rather not have it installing the now very old version of Klango, it used. Actually maybe someone should talk to the Klango dev team about this, not to mention about pirate memory, sinse their status is currently uncertain. Haunted factory was a sound based game similar to tetris involving sound matching. Some people I know weren't keen on it but I did think it was a potentially good idea for a game, though perhaps some more ways of reviewing the game board and knowing what blocks were there in order to setup combos and the like would've been nice.
